My grandfather planted a black walnut tree on the edge of our property in 1958. We are in the hight desert SW at 5000 feet, but that tree thrived, grew into a giant tree, and we had many black walnut trees that came up from the the walnuts on the ground. About eight years ago all the walnut trees on the property mysteriously died. I cut down the smaller trees and gave them to wood carvers, but I didn't have the equipment to cut down the big tree. Last year I finely found a tree trimmer who was able to cut down the big black walnut. The main trunk was 36 inches in diameter, and 12 feet long. Many of the branches were 10 to 12 inches in diameter up to 20 feet long. I sold the tree to a person in our village who has a lumber mill. He told me the trunk produced beautiful slabs, but he has never sent me photos like he promised.

Fifty years ago, the stump value of black walnut and black cherry was about $5K. That's how much you would have to pay the landowner just to harvest it. I can't imagine what the trees are worth today. They would even dig up the roots to make veneer.

The Black Walnut is a real special wood and if handled properly the grain will stand the test of time in a piece of furniture. I can see using anyone of these three as a table top or a night table top and when you think that the board would be only $70. this makes me want to drive from Montreal to Pa. to pick up some lumber 😉 I'm loving these hardwood videos but I really feel the boss needs to find out what the competition is charging for the same wood and bring his prices in line. Really nice video, thank you

You should think about running that last four inch slab thru the saw again. That way, you get two 2-inch slabs that you can be book ended. You double the overall width that can be achieved for a table. Plus, the mirror effect is a pretty cool selling point.

A good trick that a lot of the slab cannels use is a water spray bottle "reveal". You sweep the sawdust away and either squirt it with a water bottle or dramatically pour a bucket of water over it revealing the figuring. It's kind of an OHHH, and AHH moment. Works well, might have worked for that quilted piece you showed in this video.

Thank you for reminding me of my family history. I’m an 80 year old Kiwi (New Zealanders ). And my Grandfather and his brother both had 16 animal bullock teams dragging the Kauri logs out of the bush. A Kauri tree grows up to 50 meters tall and 16 meters in diameter. One of the stories of my grandfather is that he was the only Bullock Driver that didn’t swear. How 32 bullocks managed to drag trees that big even cut into logs out of the bush I have no idea. Maybe they combined with other bullock trains. Anyway thank you for reviving almost forgotten memories. As there is probably no one left alive with memories I think I will go to the library and look it up. Another new hobby to keep me interested for a few years. Good luck with your business.
