Nice clean work John!. Don't know where you live, but it's great to have wooded land to explore. I have 16 acres of woodland on my land with a beautiful creek running through it. Peaceful to just go air and listen to the water running over the rocks.

I enjoi your work and I have a small suggestion. Make a small round or square iron logo, then heat it and stamp/impress on the wood handles. It's a 30 seconds job but gives an extra touch in the final design 👍🏽

After watching several of your videos, I wonder how those wood handles stay in place long term. It looks like they are just tapped into place. Once you actually start using these tools, how do the handles not work themselves loose?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 3 жыл бұрын
When in use with a striker the handle needs to be "flexible". If it was wedged it could crack/break. And yes, it will need to be driven tight in between heats if loose.
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 3 жыл бұрын
*These are top tools. Hammers of course need to have wedges.
@GrowthCurveMarketing
@GrowthCurveMarketing 3 жыл бұрын
Great stuff. Does the handle not require any further securing by way of a wedge? Also, I'm trying to understand why the annealing step happens after hardening, and not the other way around. Apologies for my ignorance, but I'm learning a lot by watching your videos!
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, this is 4140/medium carbon, oil quench to harden. I then heat the part to slightly soften/temper it. This reduces hardness, gaining toughness and strength.

Regarding the wedge, I believe this a tool that will be struck and not swung so it probably doesn’t need to be wedged.

Is there such a thing as a concave fuller?
@rigoniironworks
@rigoniironworks 3 жыл бұрын
haha, prob not. I needed the tool/shape and couldn't find a similar one online. Basically, a rounding hammer you can hit.
@mitchelperkins6723
@mitchelperkins6723 3 жыл бұрын
Actually yes there is. Brian Brazeal makes them. I did one as well. It is a top tool used with a drift in the eye of top tools. When releasing the tool from the drift, or when forming the faces of a fuller for making fuller troughs in hammers, it forges the struck end of the top tool to a slightly rounded shape. Or relieves the edges of the struck end. Easier to forge that shape in than to have to grind it in. Also being forged it gives the struck end more life than grinding it.
