In this video I'll show you how to install dual batteries. Dual Batteries can be a lifesaver but only if you do it right and that means using a battery isolator. Watch and follow along as I show you how to install and wire everything up.

Good video... Just a recommendation The ignition control relay is really not the way to go. It does not protect you from discharging both batteries and getting stuck if you left the switch on. A voltage sensing relay works better. It senses when the alternator is providing a charging voltage and allows both batteries to charge. It also eliminates a bunch of wiring and switches... It then will automatically open when the batteries drain to a certain voltage point. You wire all your non engine running accessories to the second battery (Stereo, amplifiers etc) and it will only drain the second battery leaving your starting battery charged.... You can add a parallel emergency start switch to allow the engine to start off both batteries when needed... Other then that this video is a good instruction on how to do it. Just keep in mind you have no protection from two dead batteries if the switch is on...So remember to turn it off... It also offers no protection from a weaker battery discharging the primary battery... Lastly put boots on your positive terminals. That's a lot of hazards under the hood when wrenching...

Please don't use those "quick connectors" they do not make a reliable connection. Just strip the wire and use a little solder. Nice video thanks.

if u want this to be permanent and in a trail rig you should really solder and use heat shrink tubing, crimp on connections are one step above twisting the wires together and wrapping in black tape.

actually solder isnt that great on vehicles that bump shake bounce etc. It will crack. Crimp connectors are used in Industry in many factories, thus they must have passed tested to be allowed. The best overall thing, that we do to our vehicles is crimp them, remove the plastic cover, solder the wires to the crimp connector then apply your heat shrink.

Hey Matt!... good job on another great video (both parts.) I noticed you mentioned you dont have a 3/4" drill bit... I'm actually really surprised you dont have a Uni-bit or Step Bit.... I cant tell you how many times I've used mine in various projects. Great for drills or even your drill press... And they're available in any hardware store, or even at Harbor Freight. On another note, 4AWG wire would've been sufficient for this or just about any dual batter set up... remember, XJ's stock charging/starting system wiring is only 8Awg. The larger wire is great for peace of mind, but would only be necessary for larger amperage systems.... (like in the case of a 200amp alternator or something) None the less---- Thanks for putting out another great set of instructional videos!

This may be a dumb question, but instead of wiring the one wire to the ignition hot source, would it still function properly if I spliced it in with another switch that's only hot when I turn it on?

I know this is old but why not have the ignition hot power a relay for your battery switch to keep draw off the stock ignition circuit.

Hey Matt few questions--- 1. did you go with the waterproof version = $230, or the standard - $130 (amazon pricing)... 2. What kind of amps are you cranking out on your alternator, im running 100amp. Wondering if you went aftermarket to run all those accessories? (really liking the junkyard fuse box, switch panel, dual battery and onboard air set up for my range rover classic)

With this setup I would leave it in the up position (with the green light on) for normal use, then switch it down for both batteries?

You shouldn't be in an engine bay If you can't hook the battery up.

Great video! Question. You use the second battery I guess for accessories like dash cam front and back. So lets just say I didn't drive my car for 3 days and parked it, the 2nd. battery will be depleted but once I start my car, the alternator will charge up my 2nd battery right?

If you try and start the engine with the secondary battery, all the current will have to go from the engine threw that little ground strap. Wouldn't it be better to ground it to the engine, or other battery?

all the current will flow through the 2 gauge wire he installed and into the body not into the factory grounding strap,, however it would of been just as good possibly better to connect it to the primary battery terminal yes the only way the current would flow through that factory strap during start up is if that was the grounding strap for the starter which it isnt, if it was than obviously itd be designed for that current.. both grounds just share the same bolt to the body

I'm probably gonna sound dumb but I like to verify conclusions. When you start it on backup Batt you can switch it to primary batt with engine running right?(for re-charging) conclusion based on the premise that, provided your alternator is working properly, alternator will keep engine alive with no battery.(switch in no batt position)

Mike Gonzales there is no no battery position. It is: battery 1, battery 1 and 2 when ignition is on, and battery 1 and 2 all the time.

hey i'm going traveling hopefully in 4-5 months and starting to plan everything i'm going to be taking a nissan narvara d40 or a mitsubishi l200 mk5 , i was concerned about a flat battery i have some solutions but this is a really good idea and i will probably get this done to my car, also , can anybody tell me if it is worth adding a second alternator or not ?

Your "pardner" doesn't like those bolt down battery terminals like you used on the second battery + cable. post. He prefers to soldier them to the "lugs".

Would this be considered 24 volts or only dual batteries?

Smokey Eagle no, if you connect negative to positive that is "series" and would double the voltage. neg to neg and pos to pos is "parallel" and doubles the capacity, same voltage.
