A genius review, Kim. You helped me understand the story on an even deeper level. It was a great buddy read! I'm singing your praises. Man against man, but also man against nature. I think the judge also was the decider on what he would allow to exist; by noting it down and understanding it, he allows a thing to exist or then he destroys it.

Thanks so much!!! I was hoping to get your approval! LOL!!! I loved our reading experience and would love to team up again in the future. You are right. The Judge decided all and I think that's why he was so suspicious of the Kid. The Kid held some judgement also and the Judge disapproved and kept an eye on him. He was supposed to be the only judge and the Kid had no right to look down on anyone.

Thank you for the excellent book review. I am probably never going to read it. Forty years ago, maybe, but not at 78. I really appreciate your reviews and know that I can trust your reviews when I'm deciding what to read. I look forward to your posts.

I think the violence is an interesting factor in this book. While it is based in reality/history, I think it also works as a gauge for the reader. If you become desensitised to it, you may realise how the gang looked at committing violent acts during their travels. If you still are upset by it at the end of the book, you connect to what the town's civilians or people from the outside looked at what the gang, and others, have done.

Wow! I think this is my favorite vid of yours Kim. What a spectacular and on point analysis. You may have read it but if not Dee Brown's novel Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is an excellent pairing. It illustrates Chapter by Chapter the atrocities carried out by the Feds, States, Cities and white men against each tribe. Each Chapter tells the story of a different Tribe. It's a brilliant read.

Love love love when someone can detach from one aspect of a book ( or any life experience for that matter) and mull over and appreciate another. I hear certain people try to voice this (on public radio!) and there’s always someone who gets offended.

Hi Kim, I’m glad you got so much out of the book and your review was fantastic. However I tend to stay away from violent books. I also stay away from violent movies but that’s another story. I have an anxiety disorder that acts up sometimes by itself, so I don’t want to feed it. Aloha friend

I'd never heard of Cormac McCarthy, or at least I don't remember him. Doesn't sound like my kind of read. I love though when a setting becomes its own character. I'm glad you've loved this book so much!

This was an excellent commentary on this book and after reading this book for the first time I must remember that it is an allegorical novel and not take all that happens to heart. Thanks for voicing what I was feeling. Now I must just ride on, but maybe one day do a reread.

Great review!! I just finished this book and I can't stop thinking about it. While the Evil is well realized in this novel I do think there were subtle hints of goodness sprinkled in that the reader barely recognizes. The giving of food or water when another was in need, that even in the "Blood Meridian" the height of violence/evil goodness does appear....however miniscule the amount. I already want to re-read this book. lol . Again excellent review.

Great review, Kim. Though I will not be reading the book, as I can't deal with the violence and all it depicts, your thoughts were quite evocative. But as you were speaking about the massacres of the Native Americans I thought of James Michener's Centenial. Many of the events he wrote about in the book were inspired by true events, such as the horrible massacre of the Arapahoe. A mini-series was made of the book in 1979 and I will never forget that shocking scene that I was not expecting having had no knowledge of that history at the time. The director and producers did not shy away from the horror of that scene. I will never forget it...

It's interesting but Blood Meridian has been considered unfilmable because of the violence. Considering all of the cable shows that show everything that attitude is unusual. I also saw a movie in college about this time in history and it was so graphic I walked out. The professor was aggravated that several people walked out but he never told us what we would be viewing.

@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH That is puzzling as it is the history we have to live with that needs to be shown and talked about. I remember the scene like it was yesterday and my questions about our history as a country began. I was horrified by what was being done to people, innocent men, women, and children. I was sobbing and shaken and came away with shear disgust...at the blatant disregard for humanity. Not much has changed.

I think McCarthy is obsessed with the thin line between good (civilization) and evil (chaos) and that he uses the US - Mexico border as a metaphor for that line. Characters who cross into Mexico are changed, experience terrible violence, commit terrible acts of violence, in a sense they lose their humanity (civilization).When the Glanton Gang crosses into Mexico they enter hell, where they almost all deserve to be. Characters who cross from Mexico bring chaos (evil) with them. To me the Judge is evil personified and the kid is humanity. In _Blood Meridian_ evil wins and humanity is submerged/absorbed by it as the kid is by the Judge. In _The Road_ the Boy represents the hope for humanity and The Man succeeds in preserving that hope. In _No Country for Old Men_ evil is represented by Chigurh and the Sheriff fails to stop him from threatening humanity. There are few "good" characters in McCarthy's books, most just show the more decent characters struggling with evil.

@@BookishTexan great points. McCarthy seems to grapple with evil and the redemption (or loss of redemption) of man. Also, without writing it, he seems to comment on the inevitability of man's internal struggle and the inability to stop the thirst for violence and bloodlust. The analogy of the line between Mexico and Texas is interesting; it brings me back to the heat, bleakness, and desolation of the landscape as well as men's souls.
@BookishTexan

@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH I have a tendency to judge McCarthy's books by how clearly and without pretension he conveys that message (though I see it less about redemption and more about preservation). I think in _Blood Meridian_ he does it better than in his other books.

A very enlightening review! Thanks. As skilled a writer as he is, and I loved The Road, I don't plan to read this book. If I wanted to steep my mind and emotions in gore and depravity, I would resume watching the evening news or closely follow the doings of corporate America or the Republican party. I don't have my head in the sand. I'm just struggling to stay sane. I really appreciate your awesome reviews Kim!🤔😊
