What happens when you blow your serpentine belt on your 2008 BMW 335i E90? It completely shreds, wraps around the crankshaft pulley and pushes in your front main oil seal which then gushes out oil! Sounds pretty traumatic right?!
Well luckily for you, the repair isn't! Watch along and see just how easy this was for us to complete!

Thumbs up for a good video showing that portion of the job. However once the timing chain chews up the belt the little fragments clog the oil pickup and can cause oil starvation. I will be dropping my pan and cleaning it out as just draining it is insufficient. Also some of the belt can get carried to the top of the timing chain and caught up there as well. The valve cover needs to be removed and the cam timing gears checked as well. E90post has a good thread on this all too common issue. I will be adding the protective metal bracket so this never happens again.

Great video showing the steps to replace the front crank seal and how the serpentine belt damaged it in the first place.

@@DevonsGarage I have to do some cleaning too of the belt material, but I got the seal off one quick question you barely moved the crank. Is that because moving it too much can damage something without the belt on? And without harmonic balancer. I may have to move it a bit too

Great video. It took me many attempts to, with all bc the screws. I had to rotate the crank to use a new location on the seal with the screws for each attempt. I used a torch to heat up the block around the seal, may or may not have helped. Finally got it

I think its a bit risky doing just a seal without taking oil pan and valve cover to check for belt debries. Most likely they are all over the engine.

I was wondering what was involved with removing the old belt from the internals. Nice video. Go out and buy yourself some medical hemostats for reaching into hard to reach areas like you were in. I just today installed my crank seal guard to prevent this from happening if my belt decides to shred.

looking at all the caked on oil on the front of the block, this is just another reminder to change out your OFHG's and not let it get bad enough to leak on the belt system and cause this huge failure

The shop wanted $5800-6500 to do the rear main seal on my BMW 335i with 80k miles. That's insane. What's more insane is rear main seal leaking at 80k miles. (The valve cover gasket leaked around at around 60k miles!!!) Not fixing at the shop, needless to say. So I"m driving my Lexus RX with 237k miles. No oil leaks at all...amazing.

Same thing happened to me last week! I’m doing this process right now... did you remove the valve cover to see inside? Also did you remove your oil pan to check that the pool pick up to isn’t clogged and full with bits of belt? Wondering because I’m seeing other videos and some do it.. thanks your video helped me a lot

Based off what I have been reading I would do it as precaution. If you don't check it though and a low oil pressure light comes on stop quick or else the engine will blow up.

It’s been a little while since we did it and my buddy bought the kit, I think honestly we used that sealant because it came with it however I bet if I did some research some high quality black RTV would work too but don’t quote me on that, I would have to compare them before I gave my own approval haha

Pieces will be in oil pan and oil pump pickup, some might even get on to the camshaft area. You have to drop the oil pan (fun, even more fun if you have xDrive) and the valve cover to look and look and look.

Yes you are right as I also knew as well but my friend wasn’t wanting to do all of that part so we left it as is. It has still been running very well to today with normal oil changes. I don’t have the best hope though as time goes by but maybe he’s lucky since the belt snapped as they we’re pulling onto the street to their house so it didn’t run much or at a high rpm, don’t know
