Body Position And How To Correctly Attach To A Sports Motorcycle

One thing many sports bike riders struggle with is finding a body position that is both reasonably comfortable, and also ensures they are attached correctly to the motorcycle and not causing instability.
The motorcycle is generally a stable platform, it is the rider who introduces the instability especially when they don't attach properly, put their body in a bad position, and inadvertently put too much weight on the bars and / or put inputs into the controls that are not desirable.
This is but one way to approach it and apply good principles in how you attach to your bike.
NOTE - Always consider getting professional coaching and attending schools such as the California Superbike School.
Small body position changes can feel like a big movements, and changes in body position can also inadvertently introduce other problems.

Exactly how I was taught to hang off the bike during cornering. It does take a while to retrain your brain after being used to keeping neutral with both legs gripping the tank but I'm getting there.

cheers mate, there is always a common starting point and then we make our own adjustments to suit ... took me 8 years to really find my best body position.

One of the best videos on KZfaq!! One question please: when we are hanging off the seat, do we sit on the seat or our weight is on the footpegs ( always pressing the footpegs)?
@vijayam1
@vijayam1 Жыл бұрын
Butt is on the seat, you press on the inside footpeg to turn the bike. You don't load your entire weight on the inside peg.

Truth is you hang on / attach to the bike with your legs. Ankles can play a role in that depending on how you attach. if you hang off the bike a lot you will get more weight on the inside foot peg as a consequence of that, but regardless you simply sit on the bike and don't get overly concerned with weighting on the foot pegs. Any thoughts that weighting foot pegs is a part of steering the bike is incorrect and not how fast track riders (pro level) do it.Weighting of foot pegs is significantly more important on dirt bikes which is another matter entirely. Hope that helps mate.

Are you in your 60’s!!!!!!! Hahahaha!!! How did Doohan do his style? He used to keep his body up over the tank?? Don’t get me wrong I love getting these little reminders. Something for me to work on this week. Cheer Jorge!!

yes mate .. the years are ticking by :-) ... lucky bike riding is skill based so it isn't a disadvantage on the bike being 60+. Yeah Doohan had his style as everyone points out, and he did incredibly well with it. He also did it and locked on in a way that did not destabilise the bike which most people can't replicate. In that same position most people are not attached and load up the inside handle bar. I have my doubts that it would work for Mick the same way today on modern bikes with the lean angles modern tyres are capable of. Cheers Champs, looking forward to some laps with you again one day ... that is if you want to ride with an old bloke :-)

Sometimes I feel too much pressure on my inside foot. Should use my knees more, or maybe need to turn my ankle a bit
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 2 жыл бұрын
If you move your butt off the seat you will have pressure on the inside foot, can't be avoided. I can't give you a good specific answer to your questions as I can't see what you are doing .. suffice to say that if you are connected sufficiently well with the lower body (ankles, thighs, knees etc ... whatever works for you) to the bike that it helps you avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the bars you are in a good position. I personally like to rotate the inside ankle so it helps me open up the hips, thats my preference. Hope that helps in some way.

The only BP question I have left is corner entry, how do the pros dangle their inside leg? Do I just put more pressure on the bars when braking straight up and down or do they lock the outside foot and leg in somehow to alleviate bar and inside foot pressure? They seem so relaxed on entry when I feel like I'm fighting the brake forces hard.... Thanks
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig Жыл бұрын
I know for a fact they put more pressure on the bars than people realise. I know some lock the outside knee into the tank with a calf raise, some (like Johnny Rea) have pressure up against the rear of the tank ... but they have their body positioned in such a way they have great attachment on corner entry hence it looking relaxed. One way to get a feel for what might work for you is to slow down with the brake while removing your left hand ... this is something we had to get used to at the Superbike school so we could give signals to the student, I noticed it changed how I attached to the bike at corner entry. Obviously don't do that unless its a safe place.
