In part 2 Bonsu Thompson Reveals Biggie Threw Shots at LL Cool J on "Who Shot Ya?"
Hip-hop has long been admired for its ability to draw listeners into a world that encompasses not only music, but the stories and experiences of those creating it. Few artists have managed to achieve the level of iconic status equivalent to the late Notorious B.I.G. - and his final album, Life After Death, left an undeniable impact on the genre. Recently, writer, producer, and Brooklynite Bonsu Thompson took on the task of further exploring the legacy of this album and its creator with his series, Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death. Hosted by Angie Martinez, Thompson's series delves into the stories behind this masterpiece, bringing together perspectives from those closest to Biggie during the final 18 months of his life.
With Bonsu Thompson's versatile background that extends from journalism to television production and digital media, it comes as no surprise that Iconic Records hits all the right spots. Delivering raw and introspective analysis on the landmark album, the series invites a host of guests to contribute their personal accounts of not only Christopher "Biggie" Wallace's artistic process but the ruthless New York rap scene that helped shape life on the East Coast during its golden era.
Over the course of the series, Angie Martinez spends five nights in conversation with some of the closest figures in Biggie's life, each sharing the untold stories that changed hip-hop forever. They recount the rise of the Notorious B.I.G., the East-West rivalry that nearly sparked conflicts, and the fallout following the rapper's tragic death, which only cemented his legacy.
What sets Iconic Records apart from other documentaries exploring hip-hop lore is Bonsu Thompson's strong influence. Behind the scenes, Thompson was hands-on and allowed guests to open up and speak honestly, providing listeners a rare glimpse into the life of hip-hop's biggest names. With a combination of knowledge and expertise, he was able to curate a series that caters to the educated fan wanting an in-depth look at the genre's evolution.
Moreover, the Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death series is more than just insights into Biggie's life. It also illuminates the unique perspectives of his peers, each giving voice to the trials and tribulations of the times. Thompson brings fresh insight into the iconic moments of the East Coast rap scene, resulting in an extraordinary behind-the-scenes portrayal of the music industry, which captures the momentous energy of a transformative moment in the genre.
Bonsu Thompson's incredibly detailed storytelling skills capture the essence of Biggie's Life After Death, highlighting his artistry and the East Coast rap scene at large. While there are several documentaries devoted to the rapper, Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death stands out in its ability to bring listeners into the world of Christopher Wallace, showcasing the brilliance of his work alongside the inspiration behind it. Thompson has created a platform for sharing history and culture, allowing listeners to learn something new about icons they thought they knew well. Take the time to listen to Iconic Records Season 1: Life After Death on the Roku Channel, or any other platform, and immerse yourself in the world of Biggie.

@@BlackFaithProduction You have the maturity of a toddler. Rappers have beefs all the time, large and small. The benign disagreement between Biggie and LL Cool J over L wanting to go last on a song in and of itself doesn't make either of them bad people. Doing an end zone dance over Biggie's murder just makes you sound retarded.

From a Native New Yorkers point of view... the first time we heard "Who Shot Ya" or the beat that Keith Murray spit on, Mary's album "My Life", originally it was debuted on Stretch & Bobbito radio show and the last 2 bars B.I.G said was "representing for the Queen/your royal highness"

Who shot ya may have been at ll and not Tupac, but 2Pac thought it was about him, than LL. I shot ya was like a response to hit em up, and New York rappers. I Shot Ya had LL's verse and a few references by others to Tupac lyrics. -> I'm here to make a dollar out of 15 cents and... -> I'd rather be feared than loved, bc the fear lasts longer (Machiavelli reference) -> you hear me friend? @@Sid-ri1iy Your comment let's me know that you are a young person. No disrespect. But "I Shot Ya" came out in '95 "Hit 'Em Up" in '96. I Shot Ya was a direct call and response to Who Shot Ya, (which uses the same sample but at different intervals). If the lyrics "Old School New School Need To Learn Though" was a subliminal dis towards L.L., I would need to hear B.I.G to explain that himself and unfortunately he's no longer here to do so. So...

The album was coming out in a little over TWO WEEKS!! I’m curious with the idea that Biggie didn’t hear the project in its entirety. He had listening parties. Days after his death I doubt they hopped in the studio to do anything. These albums still have to be pressed up and shipped out so what work could possibly be done in 16 days? A lot of people who are younger or may not have really been following the music or had sources close to the Rap game may not understand why LL Cool J was just randomly at the recording session with Biggie…yes he was on the “Flava In Your Ear” remix but remember that Diddy was a protege of Andre Harrell ( RIP) because he got his start at Uptown Records and Andre Harrell was not only friends with Russell Simmons who was of course, the co founder of Def Jam Recordings with Rick Rubin but Andre Harrell was a former A& R director who did some producing and songwriting part time…he was also 1/2 of Jeckyll & Hyde who was managed by Rush Management…fast forward…1995, LL Cool J ..the 1st solo male rapper to go platinum and to win a Grammy during the late 80’s but at that time, he was in a career slump because gangsta rap and backpack rap was big on the East Coast..he was viewed as a commercial rapper who made music for mainly women…so he might have kind of tried to throw his weight around because Diddy was supposed to co executive produce LL’s next album but ultimately Biggie did give LL his props on “ I Got A Story To Tell” with the “You Know the epilogue by James Todd” line .

I DONT BELIEVE THAT HE DIDN'T LIKE LL. I heard tha story about when they 1st met and Big was praising LL about L's 14 shots to the dome album. Which was a flop but Big liked it. Big even used L's "THE ACT OF MAKIN LOVE" excerpt at the Beginning of Me N My B**h So stop cappin and tryin to rewrite history people. Smdh

That's confusing. That's a long shot.. cause BIG said old school new school... if he was targeting LL it would be old school only in the line. LL was FROM 1985 popping since so old school only would have been a shot at LL

I know at that time this song was being created 2 Pac and Cool J were beefing over Quincy Jones daughter. LL is the dude but hes been avoiding KRS since the 80s. Cool J picks battles he knows he can win. He will NEVER get at KRS. Respectively speaking. Cool J also never returned shits to Shan after Shan called him out for biting his track.

Oh my god! I always wondered if that was the reason for "I Shot Ya", now it all makes sense. But, from who and when did LL EVER bit somebody's rhymes?! This is the first I've ever heard of that nonsense. I'm seriously asking, because that's a claim that needs some receipts. It's preposterous.
