I had a friend, Virginia Tremble who was my surrogate mother. I would get lost in my talks with her down at the church. Every time I listen to Dr Angelou it is like I am talking with Virginia. She became suddenly ill with cancer and passed quickly. My pastor went to see her and he said she looked so poorly. He asked her how she felt and she simply said " Pastor, it is well with my soul". She passed soon afterward. I miss her much.

In my entire life I have never heard any person state what I have always felt and that is that no person should believe that their entire life or reason for existence revolves around their children. Thank you Maya for sharing this with the world. I have watched so many women waste away because once her child rearing duties are over she doesn't feel that she has any value.

Although my birth mother may have not truly understood her purpose in liberation Mother Maya reminded me that I too can liberate me. She's so blessed to have a mother so strong and loving. My mother would never have a clue how to not denigrate and minimize her kids. Well, except Elaine - she lets her slide on account of fearing her unstable side. I could never tell my parents how my husband has harmed me repeatedly since I've moved here. And at the same time I don't dare want to move back.

6:20... Maya talks about periods and the curse of a period... I remember that I learned recently from a couple different sources: research, blogs, documentaries, people speaking from experience on social media, etc. that indigenous peoples had and some continue to have ceremonies and celebrations and traditions about a woman’s time on her period, it’s not viewed as bad or annoying, but it’s sacred and often the men they take care of of these women while they have cedar baths/soak in water/ or other ceremonies because it is sacred, and women are sacred because we give life. I think about this when I’m suffering and in pain once a month while on my period.... I just wish I had more connections to what my ancestors did.... but somehow much is lost but I am grateful people are trying to keep it alive. I am grateful for mothers like Maya Angelou.

I love that her mother never embarrassed her. My mother was consoling when I had my oldest daughter at 18. In some aspect she was more of a mother to my daughter, caring for her while I worked and went to school. My mom worked at night so I'd be home in the evenings but when she was off at night she still took over at times, being more concerned for my state of rest than her own. Being a mom for me was all hair bows and tutus until my daughter reached 13; then I haven't a clue. She's 20 now and I still have no clue how or what it means to be a mother to her because my maturity is still only 18 years older than her. But by the grace of Almighty God we press on. My 11 year old definitely gets the better of motherhood out of me simply because of the gap in maturity so I am purposed of God to write poetry that Inspires teens and young adults to embrace the God given virtue and purity of sexual abstinence until marriage. Still recovering from the effects of an abusive relationship turned marriage, I simply don't want other young women and girls to suffer what I've gone through. And if I can help one person avoid those pit falls I'll simply say all glory to God for such was not in vain. Elementsofvirtuecollection.wordpress.com Poetry & Songs of Inspiration "Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies." (Proverbs 31:10)

Agree - we white folk (me/us) can appreciate class and intelligence when we see it. Maya had it. A leader. Like with the Jewish race, the Blacks have such grace in their women. Loyalty too. And their men are brave. White folk have to some extent lost our clan-ship through the disbursement of our children away from the family and our elders away from the family. God in Heaven, I pray we find our families again and our elders and that we all come together. Blacks, Whites, Jewish and all others. I will buy this book.
