On BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, the complete works of Shakespeare is the default book that everyone gets. So, I totally think you ought to get an extra slot 😊

This is a hard one! Lots of books I love really wouldn't work for this purpose. My list: 1. Complete shakespeare (necessary) 2. Thomas Sackville and the shakespearean glass slipper (my mom wrote this, and I'd want her with me) 3. The little prince 4. Bible with apocrypha (I'm not religious, but if I were stranded on a desert island forever I might want to be) 5. Tenth of december (my favorite short stories ever, by george Saunders) 6. The complete Calvin and hobbes 7. The life and times of scrooge mcduck 8. Invisible cities 9. In search of lost time / remembrance of things past 10. The odyssey in Greek and English (I don't know ancient greek, but maybe I could figure it out)

I'd simply be boringly strategic and choose the longest books possible, especially since I'm not much of a rereader when I have the option.

I'd bring 'War and Peace' and 'A Suitable Boy.' Likely the only way I'd ever get around to reading either one. And seeing as this is the only scenario in which I could imagine myself burning a book, I'd also bring along a bunch of stuff I loathe. Certainly not going to use a good book for kindling.

I never thought I would like the “Under the Northern Sky” series, but I asked for it for my birthday because of how much you rave about it. I just finished it and couldn’t have loved it more! I totally see how you read it 7 times because it’s the first books I’ve read that really gave me that sense of “oh man, I have to read this again, I know I’m going to want to read it again”. Not only that but I wanted to read it again before I even finished it. Such a great recommendation!

Okay, I really appreciate you setting the parameters very clearly because that matters! I think that was my favorite part of the video 😅 I'd have to choose a picture book or something oversize like that so I could block out the sun. I would not do well baking in the heat on that island. Probably not the answer you were looking for, but there you go. ☀🥵😫

The best books to have while stranded on a desert island would be a hodgepodge of holy texts so every night, you could start a fire.

A survival guide would be my first choice. For me Alif the Unseen instead of Peter Pan and Neverwhere instead of Cheap Seats but I’m with you on Shakespeare. I would probably take the complete Sherlock Holmes too but I would need to think on it some more. I really liked your reasoning for the whole list. It makes me think. Great video!

My desert island books would be: The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden Persuasion by Jane Austen Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston Sacraments for the Unfit by Sarah Tolmie Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb (all sixteen books + maybe whatever she may write in the world in future?)
