Sense and Sensibility "with Snape" (ie. the one with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman) is a COMPLETE MUST SEE!!! It is an excellent adaptation of Austen's story, adds witty dialogue that isn't anachronistic, captures Austen's sense of humor, is an excellent romance, adds a lot of fun Margaret scenes, is highly quotable, and is just so beautiful. If you can't tell, it's my favorite Austen adaptation.

I haven't seen any Pride and Prejudice adaptation, but I would listen to Brandon and Dan talking about nearly anything.

This feels like one of the weirdest no-agenda podcasts and I love it. Thanks for both of you just being yourselves and putting that out there. Makes my day better every time.

Brandon, the book version of P,P and Zombies is exactly what you're pitching. It knows its a joke and it runs with it.

My favourite parts of the miniseries (Since it got so little love here): I love that they can do things like properly establish minor characters like the Gardiners who are just so well portrayed in the series. I think Kitty is done better too and as mentioned Mr Bennet who is outstandingly well done and much better developed in this than in any of the others. The visit to Pemberley is just fantastic in this series not at all over done and just so fits the tone of the book. One of the things I particularly love even in comparison with the Kiera Knightley version (Which I dont hate it's a good movie) is that part of the joy of P and P for me is the fact that many things we would not consider incredibly daring, romanic, villainous or exciting are by nature of the time and setting. Austin's ability to portray the thrill of seeing Pemberley and realising the implication of what that might have meant to Lizzy's life and that of all her family is amazing. The Pemberley in the movie is actually overdone it would be well out of Darcy's class range and indeed the effort to make his impassioned romance scene is also not what I go to P and P for. Like I said it is the fact that just a letter or a few words could mean so much because of the very nature of the times. So many things seem over the top in other adaptations including the Lawrence Oliver one adn those mentioned here. For this reason I also absolutely love Darcy's proposal in the mini series. I love the slow reveal of Darcy's true character and his sister and Wickam and even the inspection of LIzzy's friend becoming Mrs Collins which I also think is better portrayed here than in both other adaptations mentioned. I also absolutely love Lizzy's interview with Lady Catherine, ``I have said no such thing. I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected with me.'' This is the only series that has the time to deliver this scene almost completely from the book and it is (In my opinion) the best written scene in the book. Delivered just stunningly in the mini series and not matched in either of the others, again partially because time cannot be dedicated to it. Anyway I could go on but I just wanted to add a little discussion on this series because I think it is excellent and talking about it makes me happy :) Would love to have heard what their favourite moments were from the series or indeed those of the listeneners

I would love a Emma version of this! 2020 is one of the few adaptations I think really understands Jane Austen’s humor.

I gotta go rewatch Bride and Prejudice now! Also if you haven’t seen it, there is a KZfaq adaptation called The Lizzy Bennet Diaries which is awesome. But my personal fave is the 1995 miniseries.

Another interesting adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries”. It’s a modern retelling of the story but it’s all done via short vlogs, there are 100 episodes but each episode is only a few minutes long so it’s only ~8 hours of content. The show was co-created by the KZfaq Hank Green and was the first web-series to win an Emmy.

The best adaptation is, hands down, the 1995 miniseries in terms of being faithful to the book. The 2005 film was visually beautiful, but the some of the characters were not faithful to the book at all. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was silly. Fun in some places, but silly. And contrived.

2009 BBC Emma adaption is phenomenal

I’m very curious what Brandon would think of The Lizzie Bennett Diaries! It’s a KZfaq adaptation that was made around 2012-2013ish I think? It really does a good job committing to adapting and making its own thing. Also, as somebody who also enjoys talking about Pride and Prejudice adaptations, I have officially decided I need to watch Bride and Prejudice now.

Bridget Jones’s Diary is a Pride and Prejudice adaptation

The BBC miniseries P&P has an untranslatable Britishness to it that makes in the number 1 here in the UK. Jennifer Ehle's EXTREMELY subtle facial gestures are hilarious, charming, and heart-wrenching and her performance is so underrated.

Dan's new BBQ place, "The singing Brisket". Just remember, it's all in the sauce. So work on what your going to put on that meat or it will be a pit...a money pit. Lol

If you ever get a chance to read it, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is an excellent book with a slightly similar idea to pride and prejudice and zombies. But it spoofs the David McCullough history books perfectly, and is full of deadpan humor.

I laughed so hard at this episode--really made my day. I love the discussions and jokes. I love that you guys like musicals and room temperature soda. Fun fact, I am one of your listeners who has never read any of your works. And--get this--I have worked at a bookstore now for 8.9 years! I listened to this on Google podcasts then came here to comment because this episode was gold. I was guffawing over the Les Mis brisket jokes and nodding in approval over the Pride and Prejudice commentary. For all who care, I think my ranking of the films would be: Kiera Knightley version Bride and Prejudice BBC miniseries "Mormon" P&P And.... Zombies I've seen the old black and white version but it's been a while so I can't really say where it falls, but I do remember those gone with the wind costumes! Oh, and let's not forget You've Got Mail (brilliant movie in its own right) gives a nod to Pride and Prejudice, not just because the book is mentioned but because it actually borrows from the plot.

I LOVED this episode! Random thoughts: * I love the “Pink Pride & Prejudice” (as we call the Utah-local version in our house), it’s one of my comfort movies. “Bride & Prejudice” is probably my kids’ favorite of all the versions they’ve seen. * I was a newlywed when the Keira Knightley version came out and my feelings about it are similar to Brandon’s. When “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” came out later, I was delighted to see Tom Hollander show up, as though Mr. Collins was on a quest to get his revenge on all Elizabeths played by Keira Knightley. XD * P&P&Zombies, the book, is HILARIOUS about 90% of the time. (I haven’t seen the movie yet.) There’s a scene with Lizzie and her sisters riding in a carriage, where Lydia is blathering on and on and won’t shut up. I won’t spoil it, just know that it’s over-the-top perfection. It suffers in its interpretation of certain characters (Lady Catherine is fantastic, Mr. Bennett not so much), and a couple of moments where it tries to be too serious (though the zombie apocalypse remains unexplained!). Otherwise, I thought it was a top-notch parody. “Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters” was pretty good, too. * I enjoyed the Emma miniseries with Romola Garai! I liked how it drew parallels between Emma, Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax. I loved the Gwyneth Paltrow version, but Frank and Jane were pretty flat in that film. The newer Frank and Jane really felt like they were the heroes of a separate story that I didn’t get to see and wished I might have. The 2020 Emma film perfectly captured the awkwardness of actually BEING a member of the Regency upper-class. I LOVED getting to see the servants’ reactions to all the drama. XD * Now I want some brisket!

The Pride & Prejudice & Zombies book is exactly what Brandon wanted the movie to be. The author took Jane Austin’s original and added zombies. It is very well done and stays fairly true to the original plot.

I did not grow up on the 1995 mini series, so I just can't watch it. I did a couple times with roommates in college and I was supremely underwhelmed. It's nothing compared to Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility which I DID grow up with(and is my favorite Austen adaptation!). Then Kiera's version came out and it's just wonderful. Love that version!

Yeah, not loving the miniseries is pretty blasphemous, but I'll forgive it because I've been watching that once a year since I was five years old and I'm heavily, heavily biased. My favorite adaptation, though, is the 1995 Persuasion. It just nails the feeling of Anne as she's written in the book. It's so expressive while being completely restrained. The two leads convey so much emotion with just their eyes and subtle facial expressions. The cinematography, music, costumes, staging, everything is so smart and contributes to the feel of each scene. I love it.

I literally just found (and re-read) my copy of Pride and Prejudice. I've never watched any of the adaptations. Totally down to listening to these two ramble about it though!

I remember watching the 95 version as it aired, and we recorded off TV to VHS so we rewatched it amany times. It is of course my favorite, but I love Bride and Prejudice and it's nice to see it getting some love! The tone is just so fun! It's colorful, the music is fun, and there are some super funny visual gags. Plus Anupam Kher is a great Mr. Bennett and 100% the actor I would want to portray my TV dad 😁

I also liked the new Persuasion. It's fairly faithful to the major plot points and to characterizations, but the emotional content is pure 21st century. I thought all the humorous breaking of the fourth wall was quite fun. And, dare I say it, finally something not in the MCU!! Wow. I have seen a couple of these adaptations!

That feeling you got, that the cast was fit for a normal adaptation of Pride and Prejudice? That's exactly how I felt reading the book - the editing in of zombies was so clumsy and forced that every time it cut to those scenes, I found myself just wanting to read the original Pride and Prejudice, because that's where the interesting story was happening!

The minute Brandon said that Bride and Prejudice was his favorite of the four, I stopped this video and rented and watched it. Then I came back so I could understand their comments better. So glad I did! I like how the adaptation modernized the themes to be about race. It was a perfect setting. The Keira Knightley version also updated the story to match our modern sensibilities. But my favorite will always be the 1995 miniseries. If "BBC" is at the beginning of a show, I'm probably going to like it. Yes, Dan, it's boring. Lots of talking and subtle looks. Boring, and wonderful! Colin Firth as Darcy forever!

I really love the Second BBC series. It is one of my family's comfort series, that is we often go back to watch it. I still remember the day it really click with me, when I went from "this is a stupid thing for girls" to "this is actually hilarious." It was an important moment for the growth of my art appreciation.

2005 is visually GORGEOUS with a fantastic soundtrack. 1995 has perfect casting and story beats. Bride and Prejudice has the best dance and beach scenes 😍

I was an extra in the 'throw the hymnal in sacrament' scene in the mormon version, but the focus on me was blurry in the final film because I was two rows behind the main character.

My favourite Pride and Prejudice themed/adaptation is ITV's Lost in Austen which contains the Bennetts, time travel in a fish out of water, Connecticut in King's Arthur's Court style mash.

I highly recommend the movie Austenland to your team. It's the story of a woman obsessed with Jane Austen and she goes to a multi day austen themed getaway retreat and of course shenanigans ensues.

Bride & Prejudice is pretty fun, but it's really too bad that it tends to be the one "bollywood" film people have seen (and as you pointed out is not even true bollywood). There are so many other bollywood films! I highly recommend Om Shanti Om, and Chennai Express for starting rom-com type films. Some other good Bollywood/Kollywood (etc) films of various genres: -RRR -Dangal -Baahubali (1 & 2) -I -Ghili -Jodha Akbar -Madharasapattinam -Lagaan -Thulladha Manamum Thullum -Muthu -Paheli You saw Shah Ruhk Khan??? You're kidding! So cool :) I am crossing my fingers for the eventual bollywood podcast episode. Hope people keep adding bollywood recs in the comments so I can watch more too :)

I LOVE Northanger Abbey! It’s so funny! Around the time I was introduced to it I would fantasize people being so much more mysterious and interesting than they actually were. It’s one of the only ones I’ve read and seen of Jane Austen’s works (I know, a shame really). I love satire though, so that’s probably why.

bride and prejudice is a great movie!

The 2005 Kiera Knightly version will always be the top of my list. I've visited the castle they used to film Pemberley in the 1995 version which was fun, but I absolutely am a sucker for the Wuthering Heights + Fabio. I also love the often underrated Mansfield Park adaptation.

If you are watching Emma, you should watch the Romola Garai version. A true contender for best Austen adaptation.

If you ever do decide to make an Emma episode, The Romola Garai version of Emma is fantastic! It is four episodes, but it moves at a faster pace and has more obvious humor than the 1995 Pride and Prejudice (which is actually my favorite version of P&P). I like the Gwyneth Paltrow version as well, and the Anya Taylor Joy version highlighted vanity in a very interesting way, but the Romola Garai version really develops the characters, is pretty faithful to the plot, and makes it so fun.

The singing brisket will be the star of the cheap made for video animated sequel to the story, directed by Don Bluth.

I’m totally in the 1995 mini series camp. My wife and I have watched it over and over through the years. I struggle with some of the character interpretations in the Keira Knightley version. Especially Mr. Bingley. He just didn’t seem to have much chemistry with anyone. I haven’t seen the Bollywood inspired one. I think I may have to watch it now.
