@Paul Boobier Why would the whole of the UK vote on whether or not Scotland should be independent, such a ridiculous statement, the people of Scotland are sovereign.
@gloin10
@gloin10 4 жыл бұрын
@Paul Boobier "The whole UK should vote on it..."? No, it should not. If there is the slightest truth in the claim that the UK is a union of equals, then Scotland, and ONLY Scotland, votes on whether Scotland wants to stay. And the other parts of the UK have to accept that. Unless you are proposing that Scotland should be forced to stay...? If your spouse decides to divorce, you do not get a vote as to whether they have to stay... "Not suprised that the BBC managed to only find Scots who dont want to leave the EU"? The reality is that Scotland voted, decisively, to Remain in the EU. The presenter did state that even in the Borders, which has, historically, been very pro-Union, they could only find ONE person who was willing to defend that Union on camera. The reality is that a lot of Scots are bloody angry that having voted against independence, because they were told that that was the only way to guarantee EU membership, they now see themselves being dragged out of the EU by English nationalists... The UK has a life expectancy of less than ten years. Brixit will destroy it.

The various nations of the British Isles should be independent but within a confederation of limited pooled sovereignty in which no one nation has supremacy over the others. Although I am Irish I can't for the life of me understand how the various Celtic nations of the British Isles seek to sever ties with England a country they have strong cultural and blood ties with only to follow a path of ceding more power to Brussels bureaucrats. Either a united Ireland or an independent Northern Ireland within a confederation of the home nations of these islands out of the EU would also solve any issue around the Irish border. ardevine.blogspot.com/2018/02/why-good-friday-agreement-will-never.html?m=1

Third Eye 2003? That’s post colonialism and acts endorsed by NATO, and primarily committed by the US. Theft in our colonies? No shit, every single empire that has contributed to the progress of the world has committed bad acts; Rome, the mughals, ottomans, China, Germany, France, Spain and the Dutch. But look what we gave them as consideration- electricity, locomotion, Liberty of press, trade agreements, medicine, steel, running water need I say more. The famine in Ireland’s main cause was their absolute reliance on a single type of potato for food, the Benghal famine had many causes. Local mismanagement by Indian authorities, huge overpopulation, successive failed Harvests, and finally a scorched earth policy employed by Burma corps in WW2. On the last point, note it was necessary to stop japan rolling into India committing mass genocides, and worked very well.

Scotland just needs to change political unions. It will have considerably more autonomy as a member of the EU than it has as part of the UK. There will be economic dislocation at first, but once it is a member of the EU is will be able to avail of all of the EUs trade deals. Furthermore, leaving the UK and joining the EU will increase Scottish national self-confidence and actually strengthen cultural identity. Scots will have their own passport, embassies, foreign policy, defence force etc...
@Roskellan
@Roskellan 4 жыл бұрын
If Scotland were to join the EU then to be Scottish would count for nothing. Scotland would have no influence at all on the EU Parliament, and the Scottish Parliament would be a puppet of EU rule. The whole purpose of the EU is to undermine cultural identify (opening your borders to unlimited immigration) and impose authoritarian central control. How can you not know this.
@taintabird23
@taintabird23 4 жыл бұрын
I only deal in facts, Roskellan. This how I know what I know. EU membership requires its members to judiciously pool/share sovereignty in certain areas in order to amplify it. It does not subject members wholesale to the whims of the EU Parliament, as you would like to portray it. There are no puppets of EU rule, whatever that is supposed to mean. Unlike the UK, this union comprises sovereign states of equal status. Only the English fear a loss of cultural identity, not because their culture or identity is weak, but because they are insecure about their place in the world.

ikm64 However, it’s not all wonderful here in Ireland. We have a spectacular runaway housing and homelessness crisis which makes homebuying impossible for young or first-time buyers, and traps many people - like me - paying 50% of our wages on rent to US vulture funds. Whatever about GDP per capita, we also owe the most in the world, per capita, following our disastrous Recession and Bailout. Don’t forget that the reason you know much about Ireland is that we were, and are, an emigrant nation, which regularly uses economic migration as a safety valve to send tens of thousands of our young out to all corners of the world in search of work - pure economic migration, of the kind despised by many right wing British and American (and incredibly, even some Irish) pundits. Add in chronic overcrowding at our hospitals, a spectacular lack of hospital beds, a significant dearth in schools, tumbling global rankings for the quality of our universities, and - as much as I dearly love my country, and my people - life here in Ireland is anything but rosy, but relatively harsh and impoverished for many people, especially for renters, or people paying exorbitant childcare costs, etc etc. Still, at least we don’t hate ourselves like we see happening in Britain now between Leavers and remainers, or like the broken, shattered America across the pond. Thank god for that.

@@vercoda9997 Well, that's not exactly the full story, now is it... a lot is true in fairness...but let's take one of your points. Yes, the media talk about a 'housing crisis' that is true... But that's only the PC version...The more factual non-PC version is... There are many people who are not 'required' in the Irish economy. Low educated, low skilled. people can't afford the ample available housing. Somehow, I seriously doubt any 'Facebook' employee on 100,000 plus average wage has any difficulty in finding appropriate housing... Now don't get me wrong here, I'm not proud of a country that can leave any people behind... But the problem is, leaving people behind in skills and education NOT housing No rich people are homeless in Ireland! That's a fact, maybe a little un PC Yes but a truth... Now many of the other points particularly about migration I do concede ... That's Ireland shame, but if you look at the growth in population, Ireland is now experiencing even that well-documented problem seems to be turning around. Some years ago, I read a book describing the final years of the Habsburg Empire. It quoted an Austrian Officer in the Imperial Army who (I paraphrase) described the Empire as being divided into patches, each of which hated the other a little more. Maybe I am a cynic but, increasingly, I think this description aptly surmises the domestic political situation in the United Kingdom and the state of relations between the home countries. This being the case, with all fuzzy nostalgia placed aside, I increasingly struggle to see the point in continuing the Union. The English and Scottish political identities diverged some time ago and have become increasingly opposed to one another. Is reconciliation possible, let alone worthwhile?

That they pervert us in some way? Theyve been coming for hundreds of years. It's true that they are a bit funny, a bit different, but they soon settle down. Theyre no bother. Aliens arent our problem. The problem has regularly been that we are caught up in 'British' policies and 'British' adventures that we disagree with and which do us harm - but which we are powerless to resist as the very junior and overlooked partner in a union of big and little. We've come to realise that little is ok. We don't see the world in the way that the English do anymore. @Louis Edrof I don't think that the Hapsburg analogy is valid. There's no great hatred of the English in Scotland. There are no fanatics here who want to blow things up or murder people for a cause. Its simply that the union drags us into UK policies that we want no part of. We have regularly been ruled from London by Tory administrators, like colonial viceroys when there have been very few (or not one) Tory member(s) of parliament elected by us. We have by proxy been forced to become vassals of the US and be the location for all kinds of nuclear weapons that we would rather were sited in Kent and Essex. We would prefer to remain friends with our neighbours and manage our own affairs. I think that we also prefer to be European than a small island some way off the coast of America - like Puerto Rico without the weather. US politics are even more monstrous than UK politics and being taken over by American Empire after Brexit isn't something we look forward to. Its that simple.

Fact 2: One of the best, if not the best unemployment rate in Europe. Ask any Greek, Spanish or Italian person why they are working here and they'll say it's because there's no jobs back home and the Economy here is much stronger. Have you seen the unemployment rates in the EU? It's shocking and Italian youth unemployment is at about 40%!!! The same is starting to happen in Germany and France, the economy there will be on it's knees soon like the countries on the Med! Fact 3: Our Interest rates are steady but the EU are thinking of going into negative interest rates! That's how poorly the EU is, they are having to go into minus % interest rates to help the sinking economy. Fact 4: Real wages are rising, unlike most of the Eurozone. Fact 6: Our percentage per capita of consumption is much higher than the rest of the EU. This means our economy is more protected than countries like Germany. Put simply, in terms of economic vibrancy Britain is hands down beating the other large economies of Europe, such as Germany, France, and Italy. Fact 7: Our manufacturing sector or Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) is growing much faster than the average EU country. Fact 8: The UK is only the 80th biggest country in the world but it has the 5th largest GDP in the world. It's ridiculous that this small little island which is roughly the size of Michigan, is the 5th biggest economy in the world and something to be very proud of! Fact 9: The UK has the fifth highest number of billionaires despite only having the 21st highest population. Fact 10: The NHS is the 5th biggest employer in the world and is continually voted the best healthcare in the world by independent international studies. Fact 11: House prices continue to rise since the referendum and incredibly healthy. Fact 12: Youth unemployment has fell dramatically since the referendum, and much lower than the EU average. Fact 13: Our public sector borrowing is down 3 billion since the referendum! Final fact: We are stronger since the referendum and far, far stronger on almost every economic statistic than the average EU country. Project fear has had the reverse effect and protect fear 2.0 that has just started seems to be having little affect either. You can keep spouting that same economic statistic that all remainers use (even though you got your figures wrong) but the fact is that the UK is strong and far stronger than our EU counterparts! Germany close to recession, France not far behind, both in political and cultural turmoil caused by the open immigration policy. If you leave the UK to stay in Europe, your culture will be wiped out in 10 years at the most! It's happened in large parts of Germany and France already. You'd be joining at sinking ship and it wouldn't surprise me if you come back begging to join the union again in a few years. I'm happy for Scotland to leave the UK because if that's what they want then that's what the people should get because I believe in democracy and honouring the people's vote! Scotland only contributes about 8% of British GPD anyway so we'll probably not even notice you've left :)

🤔 Rather interesting question, it would be unlikely that the Scottish decide to be independent and at the same time a realm in which the queen Elizabeth II or her heir be their Head of State, Kingdom of Scotland (or Commonwealth of Scotland) versus Republic of Scotland. In a given case Scotland would continue as an independent monarchy with a king of the Windsor royal household, then at least nominally, the term 'United Kingdom(s) of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland' would continue having sense. I am saying very improbable (and silly) ideas but maybe a solution were to split the UK just into two parts: a Kingdom encompassing the regions which prefer to stay in the EU such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar and including Bristol, Manchester, Oxford and London as special districts within, and another Kingdom with the regions keen on leaving the EU, and at the end at least nominally both would continue comprising the UK. Unfortunately now all seems to indicate that after more than 300 years, Brexit will tear the Union appart, opinions are polarised in extreme. Hope the UK solve their domestic and foreign problems in the best possible way 🇬🇧🇬🇮🇧🇲🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Yes, well I guess the British monarchs have been as appreciated as the Habsburg were for all their "subjects" from so dissimilar nations, and for long time until the Great War. Anyway, the Holy Roman Empire or the Byzantine Empire, they both lasted almost one millennium and they no longer exist. If, after being united during around 300 years and even ruling an empire too, Great Britain splits into different republics (as the Habsburg monarchy) and I guess the kingdom of England, the world will continue turning around the Sun, would it be a pity? Only time will tell

@@PersonyPersonYou're right, There is nothing to suggest that the EU will collapse within 10 years apart from the low interest rates (and the continuation of QE), Italy and Greece on the brink of another financial crisis (I hear that the NDP wants to bring back the "glory days" of Greece) and in order to sustain its current rate the EU will need to absorb more countries (now where have I heard that before? It rhymes with the CCCP). But you are right, there is nothing to suggest that the EU will collapse within 10 years apart from the things that I listed. And you know what? Nobody fucking truly understands the EU. It’s so convoluted as its layers, sub-layers and subsub-layers it needs its own qualification course. You think that you truly know the EU? I call bullshit.
@PersonyPerson

@@WhateverMan35 Greece collapsing financially was it's own fault, since they massively overspent on what their economy was capable of sustaining. Same with Italy to an extent. Economic troubles in a couple of member states does not mean it will cause a ripple effect on the rest of the EU. You also don't seem to understand how negative interest rates work, since you somehow think it is synonymous with economic collapse. The EU does not simply "absorb" countries, since they have to fit certain criteria in order to join it. But I am glad you came to the conclusion that there is no evidence of the EU collapsing, because there really is none. Just because you don't understand the EU does not mean others don't also. I admit I do not know about every single aspect of the EU, but know more than others as you have just demonstrated.

What the man said at the end is the crux of the matter “the union isn’t one of equal partners”. The EU is, which is why much of England (I’m English btw) doesn’t understand it. The English mentality views the EU as “the Uk is bigger, more important and put more in we should get more out and dictate our own terms”. An EU made in the British image would be ruled by us, France and Germany with ‘lesser nations’ having fewer rights. The Irish border is a good example. The UK doesn’t understand that France and Germany would harm their own interests to stand up for one of it’s smaller members, in Ireland (because if the shoe was on the other foot, we would screw them over, and indeed have throughout history). Instead we can only rationalise it as the EU want to hurt the Uk. I’m sad to say that I don’t think the Union will last the next 10 years and I worry what England will become.

Please acknowledge Scotland is not Ireland! It’s history is one of being at the heart of colonialism and slave trade, Ulster plantations a very good example of oppression and their input extending to the creation of Northern Ireland . The concept of their independence needs to be based on truth not fiction... this is not brave heart, sheep in wolves clothing is far better analogy and to do this the word Celtic is used and blaming the English who they worked alongside with. They made agreement and they held referendum and voted No. Ireland has a British border created by both England and Scotland on it and to the irony and ignorance attached to this is enormous in the wider world. Brexit was a vote by uk but Scotland is now being the politics of Northern Ireland DUP which is undemocratic to this situation. Democracy and democratic process is being mocked and the loss of it will be far worse than Brexit. Don’t allow the fictional Scotland to muddy the water read history before you start talking about Scotland as if it Ireland it’s not!!

Scotland and Ireland were both taken over by England maybe YOU should brush up on your history. Scottish independence tv shows were taken off the tv during the vote. Yes Ireland has faced hardships but so have the people of Scotland. Selfish you’re so obsessed with Irish freedom you’re ignoring their issues. They voted against it because the old people were literally getting threatened that their money would be taken. Also stop acting like everyone in Ireland is on board for a United Ireland because they aren’t. Many up in Northern Ireland want to stay in the UK. Now I’m all for 26+6 I mean fuck England but stop acting like Ireland is the only valid one because they are “all on board” they aren’t.

Postbrexit, I think it's time for England to establish devoled parliaments in the 8 regions. I've always been a strong believer that more power controlled by smaller levels makes people less disinfranchised with our policites, even if we don't support what each regions does due to the party divide in the country.
@acegarcia3719
@acegarcia3719 4 жыл бұрын
@joe caterman In a free society people disagreeing on policy is inevitable, and therefore a central government controlling more will always disinfranchise the opposition. And the way to combat this is to have more power a lower level where policies can be more geared towards the views of that area. For example the Southeast begin a Tory heartland means they can have policies that they support and on the other end the Northeast begin a Labour stronghold can adopt more socialist agenda. And even though Scotland is kicking and screaming at Westminster currently, it would be far worse if they didn't have a devoled parliament because they would have less control over there affairs and therefore probably would have voted for independence in 2014.
