Praise is sacrilegious GREGORIAN CHANT IS ONLY MUSIC THAT SHOULD BE IN A CHURCH
@briannacoppolino79810 ай бұрын
Then the music playing in this video (Allegri's Miserere Mei, Deus) can't be heard in church. It isn't Gregorian chant, as it contains polyphony. If you want Gregorian chant exclusively, you can only have unison singing-no more than one note at a time. These beautiful harmonies must, therefore, be banished.
@MacheteMambi10 ай бұрын
@briannacoppolino798 You know what I mean. Salsa is not a genre but a commercial name given to a multitude of Cuban rhythms and genres but everybody calls it Salsa to refer to Cuban music in general even though within Cuban music you have Son, Son Montuno, Guaguanco, Charanga, Guaracha, Danzon, Danzonete, Bolero etc etc. In this case, in a general sense, SACRED MUSIC and in particular Gregorian chant and similar Sacred Music is THE ONLY music that should ever be heard in a Roman Catholic Church.
@briannacoppolino79810 ай бұрын
@@MacheteMambi I actually didn't know what you meant. I get what you're trying to say in the comment above. Even classical musicians will sometimes use a term like classical music to refer to Bach, Mozart, and Shostakovich, even though only Mozart was from the classical era. That's been normalized to the point that 'classical' pretty much has multiple meanings. However, I'm not sure the same applies here. Gregorian chant is really specific. I can see people using it to refer to similar types of chant in an offhand sort of way. But using it in reference to all a cappella sacred music beyond the modern idiom is typically just an indicator that they don't know what chant is (let alone Gregorian chant). In this case, it's like asking for a desk lamp when you mean a flashlight. Either way, I hear your initial point. I don't think I've actually been to a catholic service that included more modern praise music. It would feel a bit out of place.

@@briannacoppolino798 This link is exactly the music that should always be sung. The Traditional Latin Mass Scola sings this Mass. I would say that the chanting of the Eastern Churches is equal to the Gregorian Chant of the Western Church. To us in the east, chant is the sole method through which our vocal worship is raised.

I have Latin Masses available to me now every day!!! Absolutely! Learning to sing in church and doing solos by time I was 7yrs old including weddings and funerals. I had learned to sing Gregorian chant when I was very young and have sang it ally life. I agree that Gregorian chant is THE most sacred music where everything else was given birth including I believe parts of the mass partly. It at least I believe is an influence over the centuries of how mass is said. Just my opinion. I could be wrong but if you look how the mass has been changed throughout the centuries I think at least the sanctity of Gregorian chant is an like an influence if you will when they were thinking of how we change the way we say or do mass throughout the centuries subtly. The church I attend, St. Paul the Apostle in Jersey City, NJ, has a healing mass every 2nd Thursday of the month and they play different Gregorian chants quietly in the background on speakers throughout the mass including when they have the healers in front of the altar taking individuals and praying over them in the purpose of healing them. It is the most beautiful experience I have ever attended. You can't even describe how healing and powerful you feel when you leave mass. You really feel like God is truly with you healing you from the inside. I know God is always with us always but after you leave this mass every time I am telling between the music (Gregorian chants) and the priest and his prayers, the healers, you cannot come out of there to really believe that not only are you being healed but that God himself is truly walking with you. You can absolutely feel it. It is truly amazing. All of you have a very blessed night! Love, peace, hugs, and I wish everyone blessings and healings to all!. God bless all of you!🤗😘❤️🌅😇💟🌹🌹🌹👻

The wonderful thing about chant is it is actually easier and more accessible to the masses, so the accusation that it is “elitist” is baseless. I’m not saying it’s not a powerful meditative sound of worship. Because it is. However, your argument was backed by a list of men who prefer it. Preference amongst a list of men, however significant in Christianity, can’t be what makes Gregorian chant supreme. I believe that puts a limit on what the Spirit does through all music of proper worship. Lyrics and understanding (biblical literacy) is most important to not mess up, which is not limited to a melody, instrument, or genre.
@PDXLibertarian8 ай бұрын
So, I'm the cantor at an Anglo-Catholic church and formerly at a large Jesuit parish. I would say Renaissance Polyphony is the pinnacle of church music, and Solesmes-style chant is the default. But MANY (catholic) clergy and laity do not understand church music, and it's a constant fight to maintain quality music. The music in this video is Allegri's Miserere (Ps 51), which is more of a harmonized psalm tone than actual plainchant, but I have personally performed it multiple times to the tonus perigrenus.
