You gave an excellent explanation of the length laws for various states which is a facet of the Bridge Law. HOWEVER, The Federal Bridge Law or Federal Bridge Formula(FBF) establishes the maximum weight any set of axles may legally carry on the Interstate. The FBF is a mathematical formula used to determine the appropriate weight of loads based on axle configuration (number of axles, axle spacing, weight distribution) etc. A simple explanation is you cant have 80,000lbs on a truck that is too short to properly dissipate its weight upon the roadway or "bridges". Dump trucks and short end dumps for example are too short to properly disperse 80,000lbs over the Bridge(distance between) of various axles upon the roadway and bridges. Thats why some trucks can only be registered for 68,000, 72,000 or 78,000gvw. With a standard 3axle tractor and a 48 or 53footer it says on the side of the truck....80,000 gvw. Its all about dispersion. Similar to loading a flatbed the weight must be diapersed over diatance. Trailers are rated for max weight per 10 to 14 ft...that is essentially why metal coils are held off the deck by coil racks and 23.5degree hard wood 4x4s. If all the weight of the round coil rested on the deck....the trailer would buckle because all 46,000lbs is resting only on a few inches of the trailer. I am a retired Ca DoT Officer with 25+ years of Commercial driving experience. Its great to have an inquisitive mind. I still learn new things everyday

@@OnDaCh1p When talking about the Bridge Law or Bridge Formula they are referring to the distance between the axles on the truck and trailer. There is a bridge between the steer and drives, the drives and trailer tandems and the steer and trailer tandems. Not to scare you but not only can you get over weight axle tickets but you can also be over weight on Bridges. Tickets arent usually given out for bridge violations because it involves math and measurements. The law is in place to protect roads and bridges...ie...the name.

One thing I noticed you said it's always 3 feet from the nose to the kingpin point, that's not always the case. I know for fact there's dryvans with it either further back or forward (I don't know the exact measurement off hand) and I know you were using California as an example but I think its important for people to understand that the rear axle/ axle group isn't measured the same in every state. California measures from the center of the rear axle and other states go from the middle point between the axles in the rear axle group. I'm not dogging you or anything just adding my two cents. Great video though, it was helpful to me, I'm getting back on the road after 3 years off and it helped me remember the way bridge law works. Thanks man

@@lordkingdragon yeah they're oddballs. I drove for dart when I started and they're older trailers at the time were at least a foot or foot and a half closer to the cab vs the newer lightweight trailers they got in. You could tell when hooked to them or unhooked you could see a huge difference in the kingpin location. Same goes for older container chassis for 53 ft. They're quite a bit further in than newer ones which makes turning really lame since the landing gear is much closer to the drive tires. So much so I've had to remove my mudflaps to keep from breaking them off during a turn.

@@lordkingdragon agreed about different state bridge laws. That's why everyone should have a big road atlas like the one you have (and I used to have and am getting) it makes finding specific bridge laws really easy. No.you are to make sure you are legal before you even leave the state. like for example if you were to go from say florida to california. the californa bridge law if 40 foot from center of kingpin to center of the rear most axel "shortest or all states" so as soon as you leave the custermers head to the closest ceritifyed scale and weigh yourself to ensure you are legal. if not get in contact with your company and let them know and they will instruct you from there weather you go back to the cust or if they will do it else where. i hope that clears things up if not let me know if you have anymore questions and i will try my best to answer them.

The "Bridge Law" has to do with the spacing and weight of axles when crossing bridges. But because of the exempt you can always do 12+34+34 with a kingpin to rear axle of 36ft or more. Without that exempt you'd be limited to 12+32+32 at 36ft. The bridge law is a thing for special trucks and trucks with a short wheelbase like garbage trucks and similar. The law is there to prevent high load in a short span on the bridges. The kingpin to rear axle or tandem is a separate thing.
@lordkingdragon
@lordkingdragon 5 жыл бұрын
@@Gazer75 umm no it not. Bridge law has nothing to do with bridges whoever told you that lied to you.
@lordkingdragon
@lordkingdragon 5 жыл бұрын
@@Gazer75 okay I see what your saying and your wrong. #1. As stated I was referring to a standard 53" trailer not anything else. #2. You are talking bought axle weights not bridge laws. #3. You are closed minded bought the word "bridge". Look up the definition of a bridge. With a trailer is considered a "bridge" the bridging is a way to shorten the wheel base and turning radius of a combination truck and trailer. As far as the height is concerned 13.5 foot is a standard size any higher and you will need a permit unless you are in a state that allows 14 foot. Which still has nothing to do with the bridge law they usually have a stationary tandems or wheel base " they dont move". As far as you 12-34-34 rule that's false as well. Keep in mind standard truck trailer combo nothing special. Your allowed 22,500-44,000-44,000 not excess of 80,000 total and you cannot exceed the maximum amount of weight on tires set by manufacturer. For example. Your steers have a manufacturer weight limit of 6,250 well you have 2 add em together you get 12,500 or you drivers have a weight limit of 4,250 per tire times that by 8 and you get 34,000.

What you explained has almost nothing to do with bridge laws. You're explaining kingpin to rear axle which some states have a maximum length. Reefer kingpins have a 36" set back. 53' dry vans have a 42" set back. On a flat or step the set back can be as little as 16". But, regardless of where your kingpin is it has nothing to do with the bridge formula. The meaning of bridge in bridge formula or law has everything to do with the roadway bridges, not how far it is from kingpin to rear axle.

The Federal Bridge Law or Federal Bridge Formula(FBF) establishes the maximum weight any set of axles may legally carry on the Interstate. The FBF is a mathematical formula used to determine the appropriate weight of loads based on axle configuration (number of axles, axle spacing, weight distribution) etc. Its not necessarily about roadway design...its more roadway protection.
