Mrs. Keller sounds like she was incredibly insecure about herself. The fact that she threatened an innocent girl who just happened to be beautiful and minding her damn business to get water for her family speaks volumes of that woman's character. I hate women like Mrs. Keller very much... blaming an innocent young girl/woman for her husband's wandering eye instead of laying into the man.

This unfortunately is not uncommon, even in the not so distant past. When I was in high school in Utah I the late 1980s my mom and I were trying to find a home for an exchange student from Mexico. We asked a Mormon woman with a large family because they had lived in Mexico for awhile and knew Spanish. The mom asked if the girl was pretty. My mom thought this odd so she asked why. The woman said she'd seen it before, that a young woman, maid or whomever, would steel the man of the house. Cracked me up because first of all, my friend would have never done that, plus the man was not attractive :) It bothers me that the women don't blame their husband's!

The husband knew his wife was insanely jealous. He should have told Clara to send someone else for the water instead as a warning. I don't doubt he was acting a little too friendly towards her. He should have protected her from his wife, especially when asked if he was messing with her. I feel like he really made things so much worse with his silence. His wife definitely murdered her.

This was a sad story about a young woman who was murdered because of a married woman's uncalled for jealousy. I blame the Keller's for the "horrific," murder of Clara Shanks. What is even sadder about this case is that justice wasn't served, inregards to who or whom murdered Clara Shanks. May her soul rest in eternal peace.🌹Great investigating, and presentation, as always.

So much sadness caused by one woman’s insecurity and one mouse of a man. You’d think Dan Keller would have simply said, “Don’t be ridiculous. She’s our neighbor.” If a husband is flirting with another woman, the wife’s beef is with her HUSBAND… not the other woman. Your husband is the one who made the vows. Take it up with him. But such a bizarre case. Dan Keller was obviously lying about there having been an inappropriate relationship, when he easily could have just denied it and told his wife to knock it off. What was Dan’s payoff here for reinforcing these false allegations?

I think he must've enjoyed making his wife jealous. She was very controlling and always had to be right, so her husband told her what she wanted to hear. He may have even felt a measure of pride at being suspected of having an intimate relationship with a pretty young lady, not thinking of the scandal it would cause Clara.

How did he figure that attack was “unprovoked”? Back then, a rumor about a young beautiful girl acting inappropriately with a married man, true or not, could ruin her reputation beyond repair. So whether she was murdered or she drowned herself, Mrs. Keller’s jealousy killed that girl. Edit: I hadn’t heard of the second autopsy when I said that.

The moral of the story is that you should never accept charity from anybody if you can help it, not even so much as using their private property to access whatever public services you need. Beggars can't be choosers. By putting their daughter in this position, Clara's parents rendered her susceptible to all manner of the Keller's whims and b.s. They were also obviously dense if they didn't grasp the underlying issue after the first unfounded accusation against their daughter.
@VioletJoy
@VioletJoy Жыл бұрын
@@evelynzlon9492 Maybe they never thought a problem would arise with their neighbors who they had been friendly with, and knew their daughter to be of high character. It was common back then for kids to have daily chores, so maybe that was her chore. I'm not sure how they were supposed to know about the jealousy before ever hearing from the neighbor about it.
@evelynzlon9492
@evelynzlon9492 Жыл бұрын
@@VioletJoy Life is unfair and character is generally less important than power. Nothing is free and if you take charity in any form, you reduce yourself to the status of a beggar which makes you extremely vulnerable. And you can't trust strangers based on their superficial friendliness. Her parents were old enough to know these facts of life. They should've made their daughter take a circuitous route to the well for dignity's sake.
@evelynzlon9492

@@VioletJoy It's also possible that the town planners were f**king a**holes who made it virtually impossible to access certain public services without cutting through another's property. This case is REALLY sad. We definitely have a murder, no alibi for any of the Keller clan, a wimp of a man who won't stand up to his wife, and a jealous woman who threatened the girl prior to her death. The only one that may not be directly involved is Maggie, but I doubt that very much. How did they get off? Who else had motive and opportunity? I re-read the account of this murder, and if this case was tried today, with the forensic evidence in the Keller home and on Daniel's clothes, they would've been found guilty. Sadly, DNA evidence was still about 90 years away... Poor Clara...

This case hits home for me more than most. For one thing, I know somebody who actually looks a little bit like Clara. For another, I worry that in an earlier time, someone could have told just as damaging a lie about ME (I have Asperger's Syndrome, and am often perceived strangely), with equally tragic results somehow. In any case, Nannie Keller was a woman as mean and jealous as she was stupid, and deserved a public humiliation even if she wasn't convicted. If they'd had the resources, I think that the Shanks family would have been within their rights to sue her for wrongful death, even after the verdict. "Nannie made a boo-boo," so to speak, and she deserved to pay a literal and figurative price for it.

In some cultures, even today, Clara might well be the victim of an 'honour killing' by her own family. Whether that was likely to be the case in 1890s Indiana is another question.

I seriously doubt that. Girls who found themselves slandered were usually protected by their families and the man would be targeted for leading her on. Only when girls showed this behavior to be habitual would families send her somewhere else, usually to live with another branch of the family.

@@erraticonteuse honor killings are more of a Muslim/Middle Eastern/Indian issue. Pretty fucked up. I grew up in Indiana country… Neighbors would condemn anyone that would kill their daughter over something like that‼️💯

@@ImCarolB no, you are dead wrong. The woman was ALWAYS to blame .Life of the poor did not look like the life in Pride and prejudice. And even for the upper classes , a fallen women was FOREVER shunned , while the man, even if there were whispers behind his back , was still invited in. Poor girls who missbehaved where cast out by their families, disowned and send to monastairies of even to some jail type houses - there are some dreadfull documentaries about it . They were not `protected` by the families AFTER IT GOT OUT , because the slander would taint everybody in the family if they did not cast her out. And her family BELIVED Clara had something to do with Keller - "here's your man " ... And her behaivior would have reflected on the family So yeah ..HONOR KILL her and take revenge on the kellers. It might not had the same name as the muslims concept, but it sure has the same phsychology. And the brother killing Clara it is more credible and has less imagination leaps then the Kellers.We actually know there was a confruntation in Clara\s house, we have to imagine one in the Keller's. They were the last ones to speak to her, the conversation was VERY ODD, she was running FROM the house and nobody stopped her , run after her or ask where is she going , the brother was the one who KNEW where to find her- AFTER someone moved her body - , and also, he did not tried to resucitate her. He already KNEW she was dead. And he has little to no regard towards human life of justice system , as he tried to murder Keller and avoid prosecution threatening with a lynch mob.

A lot of these stories have a sort of tragic vibe to them, but this one especially so. An innocent young lady died because of a jealous wife's imagination and a husband who wouldn't speak up. Two families who relied on each other, and then turned on each other. Many lives ruined by a misunderstanding. I think it would make a good, sad movie.

It's obvious who killed her...why they weren't charged is beyond understanding! She had no enemies except for the woman accusing her of adultery, but since she was found to be a virgin she wasn't raped and murdered, which IMO would be the 2nd obvious conclusion.

I lean to the "they did it" side. The last autopsy had six different doctors and the first 2 could have been easily been botched. Also jealousy right up there after greed when it comes to murder.

Thank you BC for this glimpse into American pioneering farm life. You brought it to life, and I was immersed in the story. It could easily have happened in rural Australia too, as a single woman's reputation was protected, being the means by which she was accepted into society. The Keller wife was deliberately destructive in the way she behaved, smearing Clara's good character. Clara probably didn't know anything about s*x, except if she watched any farm animals they might have had. I'm not sure about the cause of her mysterious death, or who was responsible, but we know that Clara was an innocent and virtuous victim of another's unfounded jealousy.
