Given that Elizabeth Brownrigg was of such evil character, perhaps it is possible that some of the 13 of her children who passed away actually died at their mother’s hands. I wouldn’t put it past her to commit infanticide.

@@allisonstephens1837 , but historical data shows that 2/3 of all children died before the age of five in England in the 18th century. That was the average, including rich and poor, so we can assume that the infant mortality rate among poor people was higher.

I wonder about her other children? Did they escape her behaviour and make a run for it or marry to get away from her, with John as her golden child? I would wonder if they got beaten. The other two surviving children are not mentioned so I'd bet they were girls and they married and got out of that house. I also bet they were beaten, although I bet Elizabeth got worse with her beatings over time. Not that lesser beatings weren't also probably horrible. Her only son a golden child. That's my guess.

Elizabeth Brownrigg, was a "despicable," person to have come from humble beginnings and treat her three young assistants in this manner knowing full well their impoverished backgrounds. I'm glad that justice was finally served and that she received the death penalty. I'm curious as to what happened to her other two surviving children? And, only three of her 16 children survived infancy, perhaps that could be questioned, too. May the soul of the one young lady who died as a result of Elizabeth Brownrigg's cruelty, rest in eternal peace.🌹Great investigating, presentation, and historical information, as always.

We sometimes think that the authorities, who were responsible for the design and implementation of policies which allowed such abuse and neglect, were indifferent to the suffering these policies caused. But the combined reward of 12 guineas, which was a very sizable sum, suggest that some officers took their duty of care very seriously.

@@sarahmariah100 I think those are from an old book. I'm sorry, when I said illustrate I didn't mean to imply he drew them but that he used them to illustrate. Didn't mean to mislead. They're still very awesome sketches and he has to find them so I'm sure it wasn't easy. Gentleman that has the Missing Enigma channel draws his own marvelous illustrations for in depth 411 cases. Very well done. You should check him out. Thanks for responding

The Brownrigg case horrified me so much when I first read about it in "Look for the Woman" that when a client came in and introduced herself as "Mrs. Brownrigg," I actually choked on my coffee. (The book is by J. Robert Nash.)

Oh gosh what utter senselessness, it would be rather fair to say that this was a sadistic vile woman of the time! Goes to show just how barbaric indeed folk truly are, such a sad, cruel act. Still the swiftness of sentence carried out brings about some light to the case, which in today's society could very well learn a thing or two, as those who are proven absolutely guilty sitting around 15, 20, 30 years is an outrage inofitself! Great video BC thanks mate 👍🏾

I am so happy that I was not alive during those times and not living in that area. Sylvia Browne, a famous clairvoyant, was once asked if hell actually existed. She replied "Yes, you are living it now on earth". Almost all of the cases and characters you portray, can be considered an episode of that hell on earth.

Female servants would generally be exclusively the responsibility of the mistress of the house. Elizabeth Brownrigg - as midwife and with responsibility for the women of the poorhouse - seems to have been a very domineering woman, and her affable husband may have been under her thumb and easy for her to manage.

Fascinating story. I can't tell you how many places I've worked over the years where one unattractive woman, usually porcine and over 40, made life hell for her employees with a toxic and hostile attitude-despite a reputation for being sweet and wonderful with the execs. And likewise, how many times the execs tuned out all the complaints from her employees and let the abuse go on and on. So I guess things haven't changed much, though one thing has: In the 1700s, when you finally were found guilty, you were publicly hung and dismembered, as richly deserved...whereas today, you'd do 6 months in rehab and then be set free.
