What a cliffhanger. And a great stimulation of conversation on the abortion issue. I don't believe it should be illegal but I wouldn't condone one if I should be in that situation. Good episode. Thanks for all you do.

What a heartbreaking story. A young lady caught in a classic catch -22 situation and her eventual loss of life. Yes, society was outraged over her demise, but that same society would have judged her with contempt and shame had she birthed a child as an unwed mother.

@@mcmd2009 A life out on the streets would probably considerably shortened her life. Unwed mothers were often shunned to the point they couldn't find employment and had to survive as beggars and prostitutes. The babies sent to horrific baby farms where they often died of malnutrition and sickness. There are indeed worse things than death.

That Paddy kid was such a crucial aspect of this situation.. He was observant & persistent just enough to help tip off something that just seemed off. It could have easily been overlooked and taken much longer to get discovered but his observant skills really were beneficial

I would have liked to know what became of young Paddy! He was a bright and observant boy and didn't let go of an odd situation until he had some answers. The case might never have been solved without his witness testimony. I hope he had a successful life.

Same here. What an inquisitive and persistent kid. He wasn’t just aloof but very observant. He helped bring peace to Alice and her family.

Thanks BC, well presented. So, Conklin gets the young girl pregnant, doesn't want to really have her around, which would be an embarrassment to his family, sends Alice to get an abortion, she and the baby both die, then Conklin kind of apologizes to his family and kills himself. What a guy.

'Asher' Roszenweig was not lying if he said he was 'Russian' and 'German' because in this period Poland did not exist as a nation, being divided between the Russian and German empires. people moved between the Polish speaking areas more freely than realised today.

Yes. My great-grandparents were German speakers who lived in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in what is now Ukraine. My grandfather was a German with a Lithuanian name, born in East Prussia in what is today part of Russia. The map was very different then!

My great- grandparents were Russian and Russian speaking from Eastern Ukraine, which was then part of Russia. They came to America about the same time as this murder. The accused, I am guessing, was from western Ukraine. I am also guessing he was Jewish as many (including my grandparents) coming to American from that part of the world were.

There were colonies in Russia and what is now Ukraine that had Prussian-German settlement, particularly of the Mennonite faith. Also, in the 18th century, Catherine the Great had brought many Germans to Russia.

Strange to think of this in such a tragic situation, but I found it charming that the newspaper artist depicted the corpse in the trunk fully clothed and with no signs of decomposition. Gave her a tiny bit of dignity in death.

I was microphishing @ my library looking for some information on an historic building that I had purchased. Would have been mid 20s. There was an article about a mother had died a few years ago & the son just left her in bed to collect benefits I think. Yea. 2 year dead woman. Believe it or not there on page 2 was her black & white picture!… nuts what they would put in there. Although refreshing to think that we used to be so hard. Would be unimaginable now.

Hey guys, Young Paddy Potts sounds like he had the makings of a great detective. Thanks to his brilliant insight into the women's behaviour, the physics behind an uneven load (the porter himself missed what Paddy was trying to tell him) and his dogged persistence, the case advanced quite quickly. Given the "left at train station" cases that I've seen (why do murderers think that train stations are good places to hide decomposing corpses?), Potts saved the police anything from 24-72 hrs.

@@jodygrulich8695 These days it wouldn't be strange but at the time it flew in the face of social grace for two reasons. Physical contact between two strangers of different gendre. Patrons did not shake hands with hired servants. It indicates that they knew each other. Hence the driver's denial. I think the police missed an opportunity to find the accomplice, but since the driver threw the main culprit under the bus, why bother?

What a tragic case of such a beautiful young woman. Paddy did an amazing job in assisting the police! Unfortunately due to the time, her life would have been looked down upon with horrible stigma being an unwed mother. What a shame. Once again, great story!

This was genuinely a tragedy. Awful. I’ve often heard you refer to some of the females as pretty or beautiful but this girl is truly beautiful to the point of angelic. Sad sad sad and that isn’t enough to describe this terrible event. Justice is only a word to pacify those not affected by crimes while dealing little comfort to those involved.

Did you see any remark about the crime being one thing or another about this girls looks being related to the crime, which it seems wasn’t a crime after all after a ‘ change in the law’. No question mark as you see because it’s rhetorical. The point I made was about how so many are described as beautiful ( which seems to be a problem in your eyes) and this picture of this girl is almost angelic that’s all. Oh and furthermore you can bet your life those looks lead her to this gruesome end.

With no contraception available then, unmarried women often found themselves pregnant. Usually when a young man they loved refused to marry them as promised. Doctors preformed a much needed service, unfortunately not all were hygienic and competent. We’ve see. Often enough here on Brief Case what happened to the children of unmarried mothers and the mothers themselves

Yes and these stories will resume happening in many U.S. states now that Roe v. Wade is overturned. Unwilling fathers could be even more likely to go to the "solution" of homicide, now that DNA science can prove their paternity with zero-point-zero chance of deniability.

How tragic! I wonder what would have become of poor Alice had Paddy not been so astutely observant and tenacious in getting the whole thing sorted out. Had he been more child-like, off in his own world, perhaps no one would have paid any mind and there would have been a much more difficult time identifying her if they even noticed at all! Good morning, This was such horrible tragedy to happen to someone so young. Back in society looked down upon you as an unmarried pregnant woman. Unfortunately, some had to take drastic measures to take care of unwanted pregnancies, and this can be one of the most drastic results. We really don’t have too many answers with Mr. Conklin, and I am really surprised that the so-called doctor was released in less than a year. Stories, like these, make me wonder if the young woman was of high society what would be the circumstances. With the doctor or would he spend more time in prison? I always wonder if there had been more help available for young women back then if more of these tragedies could have been avoided . She and her child would have had the opportunity to live instead of ending up in such a tragic way. This story broke my heart.

It makes you wonder though, why did Mr. Conklin make such a drastic decision as to end his own life rather than to answer to the affair in question...for his families sake? It's so sad that this murder still has so much mystery surrounding it. What could bring a young man to "unaliving" himself ? What could be so shameful that warranted the ultimate taking of his own life? Could it be that he got the young girl pregnant either through her indiscretion or maybe it was forced and then had her go to this doctor to have an abortion where she developed a severe infection that ultimately killed her? I also find it very odd that somebody from her immediate family couldn't identify or refused to identify her. Whatever happened, somebody threw her body away really quick for it to stay in the fetal position the way it was in the box And the body went through rigor as it was in that position.

Pregnant through “her” indiscretion? It takes two? And no surprise he would be ashamed of getting a young woman pregnant not marrying her and her subsequently suffering an horrific death. He may even have loved her.

I think it likely that lines of communication were slower, as was travel. By the time they could have gotten a family member there, the face might not have been recognizable. I could also be completely wrong. She was on ice.

One thing that got me, they never seemed to locate the woman who dropped off the trunk and it is entirely possible that the guy who took his own life was the killer, and aided by the other woman of disposing of her. Hell, we don't even know if she was actually Alice by the sounds of it, there was questions there too.

What an observant kid that little Paddy I wonder if he grew up to be a Sherlock Holmes type. Alice was beautiful. Conklin decided to end his life rather than face the music. Sad story and most of all to display her dead body just horrible. Have a good week BC and thank you for your work and research.

When Conklin took his own life, he makes mention of his obvious depression, his shame, and his family, but does not mention Ms. Bowlsby or the child. This seems to suggest to me that he wasn't the father.

My friend Lucille, 1904-1998, was raped, age 12, and aborted, age 17, by the same family doctor ! Also, her mom self-aborted by clothes hange after catching her husband, Lucille's father with another woman r ! Gruesome, double botched abortion murders of both fetus & mom ! Quite sad & tragic ! 💔 💔
