Stories like this are the original cautionary tales - the creepypastas of the early 20th century distorted by our dark imaginations and sensational retellings. My mother’s family came from panhandle Florida and every summer we’d have a family reunion by Escambia Bay. The older kids were tasked with “buddying up” with smaller kids to help adults keep track of us when we inevitably went swimming (despite our parents trying to stop us). It was the ‘80s - latchkey and free range kids were the norm but we had extra warnings from the elders. They’d tell us the story of how, in the ‘50s or ‘60s, a small cousin had been playing in the shallow waters of the bay near sunset during a reunion and had not been closely watched when she had vanished. Very soon a large gator was observed nearby as everyone searched for the little girl. It was then suspected that the gator may have been the culprit so it was shot and killed, it’s body dragged ashore and cut open to reveal the body of the little girl inside. I have no idea if there is any truth to it but I have not forgotten it in 35+ years and am suspicious of shallow brackish blackwaters to this day.

@@cosmosadorabilis7677 you’re being far too literal. OF COURSE folk tales and myths are not creepypastas since they predate them and creepypastas did not exist until the advent of message boards on the internet. Same! Cold cases are my absolute, pretty much the colder the better ever since I discovered~ and have watched every episode many times~the British TV series, Cadfael, I've been hooked on just how much you can find out forensically with an absolutely no technology as we know it. If you aren't familiar with the series, it aired on either BBC or ITV, I'm not sure which, in the UK and on PBS in the states in the '90s and aired for several season, four or five I think at least. It's about a monk living in the Abbey in Shrewsbury, England, in the 10th or 11th century, near the Welsh border ( in the time of King Stephen and Queen Maud who I think were vying for the throne at the time. People were either on one side or the other and very strongly, apparently). The monk, played to exquisite perfection by Sir Derek Jacobi, is the herbalist and botanist for not only his brothers in the order but for the townspeople as well. People come to him for all sorts of counsel and mentoring, but his real passion is for solving crime, especially murders or suspicious deaths using all the tools, acquired knowledge and his spidey sense I guess you would say available at the time. It just appealed to me so much that a body and or a crime scene has so much information to teach a very patient, careful, creative and attentive would be investigator. It really is a lesson in the most basic and primal of forensic information and how to identify and interpret it. So these cold cases fascinate me primarily with how detectives of any era approach and process crime scenes and proceed with the homicide /missing persons cases presented to them.

Some Australian place names are from the Aboriginal languages and even we get them wrong once or twice , do it more than that and the locals think you're an idiot . Lots of town are named after the home town in England of the first settlers . However lots of family names were corrupted upon landing in Australia ( at the time of convict transportation ) , possibly due to the poor education of the overseer's or a more deliberate attempt by the prisoner to make a fresh start at the first opportunity .

What a fabulously macabre story! Great work BC. Jim Smith's remains would not have been recovered without the shark's assistance. The timing of events is remarkable. The shark unwittingly lifted a rock that caused lots of criminal cockroaches to scuttle out. The solicitor's point about a limb being no proof of a dead body is technically correct, and no one was brought to justice. As Jim hasn't made an appearance for proof of life, we can assume that he is indeed dead.

Sharks typically don't like the taste of humans--a lot of "shark attacks" are a single bite followed by the shark going "ugh god what is that" bc they thought they were biting something like a seal. A lot of people's misconceptions about sharks, especially great whites, are due to Jaws, and Peter Benchley stated that he regrets writing it because it actually led to a spike in shark hunting. I have a lot of Thoughts about sharks, especially things like the phrase "shark infested waters"--they were there first, if anything the waters are human infested.

Sharks are an important part of the marine eco-system. Sharks, people and eating isn't a one way street in Australia, or rather it's close to one way but not in the direction you expect. Humans have just about fished some sharks to extinction. We eat shark in Australia. It's very popular because you don't have to worry about bones.

Shark gets caught, barf’s up some guy’s arm, which just happens to have a distinctive tattoo, which gets identified as belonging to a criminal. Oh, and the arm wasn’t bitten off, but sawn off and swallowed. It doesn’t get more unlikely than that. Poor shark!
