Primitive crime technology, primitive vaccine technology, primitive & often deadly medicine, child labor, radium-laced face creams, arsenic wallpapers, lead makeup, mercury clothing dyes, cocaine aspirin, meth sleep aids, early electronics with open uncoated wires, corsets so tight they reshape the bones in your body, children getting trampled by horses, horse poop in the streets, bathtubs that could boil you alive, no FDA regulations, alum-filled breads, ammonia-powered refrigerators (yes, they had fridges back then), lead paint toys, boric acid baby milk & unwashable baby bottles, exploding toilets, industrial smog, dumping byproduct waste into local rivers, dangerous non-regulation stair cases, incredibly flammable early plastics, only women wore deodorant, as well as nauseating quantities of perfume, asbestos clothing & toys, do I need to go on?

Her father would regret it but that is what the expected decision should have been on his part. A single woman with a child had few options for financial support other than the child's father. And there is an obligation for a man not to get to skip out on his responsibilities and place the financial obligations on society. Many if not most fathers would come to the same decision in those days.

Well done on getting remonetized. I'm so glad you can continue your interesting work. Chantrelle is a case that has never got much attention and is mostly forgotten even in Scotland. However, it was a sensation in its day. As an extra piece of detail, Chantrelle was known to Robert Louis Stevenson, who was a young man at the time. He met Chantrelle on several occasions at his old french teacher's house and went drinking with him at least once. Stevenson attended the trial and was fascinated by what he saw as the double nature of a man who he had known to be charming and educated. It's likely that this formed some basis for his later novella Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Men and women face this daily and abusers never change. Thank you for another great video. Always a good day when I can start it with a cup of coffee and come Brief Case. Stay well!

the Victorians were very moralistic to ward women, yet men could sow their wild oats. Also back then any property a woman owned before marriage often became the property of her husband to use as he wished. Glad you are back on u tube as i enjoy these brief cases

Men didn't get off completely scott free. Men who were known to cheat on their wives or never marry & chase girls were considered immoral. Highly religious members of society would spread rumors about them & either refuse to do business with them, or charge them extra. If there were any local crimes offering rewards for information, their low reputations would get them on the suspect list. Adultery was seen as going hand-in-hand with religious infidelity & likeliness to commit crimes. So unless a man was wealthy or had influential relatives or friends, he was a social outcast.

@@lucindawelenc2191 Lizzy Borden basically got away with killing her parents by saying "I'm just a girl".
@lucindawelenc2191
@lucindawelenc2191 2 жыл бұрын
@@F40PH-2CAT Not exactly. While the jury was swayed by their social class sentiments that ladies don't do that sort of thing, they also concluded that the timeline didn't make sense for Lizzie to be the killer of Andrew Borden. (I agree that she certainly had time to knock off her stepmother, and her stated whereabouts between 10:45 and 11:15 don't make a lot of sense.) Andrew Borden was seen by neighbors going into his home at 10:45. At 11:15 Lizzie ran screaming to the neighbors that her father had been murdered. At that time her hair and clothes were clean and dry. Whoever killed him had to have been liberally splattered with blood and brain matter, as there was a considerable amount on the wall behind him. Consider: it took 15-20 minutes for a lady to dress at that time. Pantalets, chemise, corset, corset cover, multiple petticoats, then a dress or skirt and blouse. A lady of their social class often needed help, especially if she was wearing a dress with multiple tiny buttons down her back. Hair would also have been problematic. The only running water at the time was in the kitchen, where the maid was running in and out washing windows. Ladies *did not* have short hair. Most women never cut it. I can tell you from experience that butt-length hair takes a good half-hour to wash and lacking a hair dryer, it takes 6-8 hours to dry. So Lizzie just didn't have time to kill him and clean herself up. Did she know who did? Almost certainly. Did she herself do it? Probably not.

There is a documentary on KZfaq about Eugene Chantrelle. In it, his great-grandson is interviewed. The children were split up after their parents' deaths and sent to boarding school. Two of the sons went into the Merchant Navy. One of them shot himself when he was 21 years old and was buried next to his mother. One son lost his business after it was discovered who his father was. As a result, his family lived in relative poverty and often had to live on handouts to survive.

The cruelty and injustice that this woman endured in her marriage at the hands of her despicable husband alone was enough for him to get a death sentence period! My grandfather's sister became pregnant, unwed, in the very early 1900's. She was cast out of the house. She married the guy because she had no other choice. Apparently the marriage was a success (fortunately). My grandfather prided himself in 'getting in contact with her' decades later as if he was a great guy for 'forgiving her' and letting her back in the family. They were in England and that's the way they were. They weren't even wealthy. They just THOUGHT they had some reputation that needed guarding. Problem is, over a hundred years later and they are no better. Don't tow the party line, they discard you.

Don't kid yourself they are not helped that much. All these Organizations pop up. And get Grants. But it's to line the pockets of the Owners. And the Court System give the Men ACD's. Which get dismissed after 6 months. If the Person doesn't get into trouble anymore. And if it's a Husband it's done in Family Court. So there are no Criminal charges at all. So think again. The media does not portray things as they really are. And I can say this for sure. I worked in the Court for many years. And I was also on the side of getting abused in my 20's. I left him. It took 25 years to get divorced. No Child. Support. And not any help from the system. And on top of it many People still lived with the thought that a Divorced Women was loose. And must of done something to get divorced. And this was in the 90's and 2000's.

What a well narrated and engrossing biography. Thank you. The timeline of events has huge resonance with us who are alive now. Many of us have been in similar situations, or know someone who has. Many of us have had relationships with men like Eugene. We have an understanding of domestic violence now, we have words to describe the dynamic that we see in this case, and can understand why Elizabeth went back to her abusive husband. We know that it takes many attempts to leave for good, and how vulnerable we are to an escalation in violence when we leave. We better understand the complexities of an abusive relationship, and they are so similar in 2020 despite women having more choices and more earning capacity, compared to when Elizabeth was alive. I feel for Elizabeth as there was no such thing as domestic violence counselling or safe houses to escape to. I recognise in this biography a woman ground down by Narcissistic Abuse, and in inevitable devaluation by her abusive husband. Elizabeth's mental, emotional and physical suffering was inevitable with him, and the smothering social restrictions regarding divorce made it a deadly situation. I can recognise Jane Monckton Smith's 'eight step timeline to murder', as the story unfolds, and Eugene takes the final eighth before Elizabeth breathes her last. This is a story that could have been in the papers, on Dateline, or another crime journalism program this week. Eugene's hanging was a satisfactory ending.

These historical cases are always the best. I mean back in the day it wasn't so much as about brutally slaying someone it was more sneaky more meticulous like poisoning. That poor girl spent many years being endlessly abused mentally being threatened on many occasions & the fact that the husband took a life insurance policy out on his wife says it all. That was the biggest clue. She knew her life was in in severe danger but back then divorce was practically frowned upon inn the community. Also I bet Elizabeth's dad felt very guilty as he was the one that demanded that he commit by marrying her. As always another excellent Brief Case. Your channel I could binge watch for hours.
