I can see how she felt like her union was so precious. At a time when loveless weddings arranged by interest among the elite were common, she regarded herself as one of the luckiest. She tried to grip unto it with the energy of despair, but unfortunately her feverish devotion wasn't reciprocal.

@Subhuman Trash You can't control whether you fall out in love, unfortunately. It takes the bitter acceptance of the impermanence of things, to live happier. For that lady, it was just too difficult to still live under the same roof with an estranged one she still loved...

@@ibelieveinyourgalaxy Like Queen Victoria, she was so enthralled by her husband that she put her children a distant second, The duchess was not all that upset that the governess had won the children's affection. Because her husband, a fond father, spent so much time with the children, he was in constant contact with the governess. The Duchess was, therefore, angry about her husband's proximity to the governess. The governess was pleasant-looking and sympathetic, but if the Duke was inclined to find a mistress he could have found someone more exciting and beautiful. The governess may have had a "crush" on her employer but it is unlikely that there any romance between the Duke and Henriette.

andrea troisi I agree, it doesn’t sound like it, but men usually get involved with women who are most easily accessible; sister-in-law, best friend of wife, governess, etc. Regardless of her looks or even her bearing, sometimes. It can be a real head-scratcher when the lover is compared to the wife🤦🏽‍♀️😁.

So heartbreaking. She loved her husband dearly and he lost interest because of her weight gain and looks Even though she bore him 10 children, he turned away from her to a younger pretty woman. The Duke was devoted to his children. The duchess probably loved her children but she, in her emotions, placed them a distant second to her husband. Queen Victoria displayed the same obsessive love for her husband, but Albert was more patient and sympathetic than the Duke.

I enjoyed this particular case about this Duchess and her "distant" husband. I really had expected the Duchess was going to kill her "unlovable" husband instead of the Duchess being brutally murdered. I noticed that the governess later said that she didn't have an affair with the Duchess's husband. But, it still was a sad case either way for everyone concerned.

Caught between a rock and a hard place. Beauty and youth in women can be a curse. She is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. Even if she didn't have a affair she may as well have. You can only begin to imagine if you had any kind of looks and you had to work men would take or try to take advantage. If you didn't give in you still ended up at fault. Cold, prick tease or just a slut either way.

The Duchess denied the governess a letter of good character that the governess would need toobtain another position. In the nineteenth century, any servant or governess was very dependent on having a "good character". The Duke may have been angry because of his wife's pettiness. The night of the murder, the Duke probably just "snapped".

How intriguing! I enjoyed this one so much I was genuinely disappointed when it ended. I could even picture the Duchess writing at her desk hoping this letter will say whatever necessary to bring her love back to her. Such a cold and seemingly heartless time for those that deserved the most respect, especially when labour was so risky back then. Absolutely scandalous turn of events for the Parisian’s and the conspiracy theory was the icing on the cake. I’ve got to say, the dukes explanation for having blood soaked clothing was ahead of its time. I’ve seen some use the most outlandish unbelievable excuses for this day and age! Thanks for that Brief Case!

The couple married very young and were at first admired for their devotion. The duke had no interest in the governess, but it is possible the nanny had a crush on the duke. The nanny was all that beautiful. Society would have overlooked an affair between the duke and a chorus girl, but rumors of an aristocrat having an affair with a Protestant nanny under his own roof was considered a disgrace. The author of "All This and Heaven Too" was a relative by marriage to the nanny. @@Orphen42O

I feel so sorry for the children. Society's treatment of the duchess would have been nothing to the stigma that was attached to the children. The boys would have been well educated, and could have taken up occupations where they could have established themselves, but the girls, even with large dowries, would have been 'tainted by bad blood'. Their marriage prospects would have been limited to men desperate for money.

Thank you for this story. I have been putting together my family tree for a few months now - and in doing that...have come to realize that the Duc and Duchess, were my 5th great grandparents. In doing LOTS of research and trying to connect with historians...I believe the story about the Duc fleeing to Nicaragua. He apparently changed his name to Jorge DePraslin, when he got to Nicaragua. My 3rd great grandfather (JJ Depraslin) was born in Nicaragua and I could never figure out how or why Nicaragua showed up in my family tree - until I came across the scenario of the Duc fleeing. It all started to make sense. This has made it very hard to research that side of the family - because there is so many conflicting stories and there is very little information of him in Nicaragua. I appreciate you taking the time to shed light on this horrific tragedy!

This story reminds me of a 1940's Bette Davis and Charles Boyer movie called "All This And Heaven Too." One of my all time favorites, would you be able too find out if its based on this story? I am 100% convinced that it is. Thank You Brief Case!!!! Watching you from Zambia in Southern Africa!!!!
