I used to put in windows long time ago. We always put the rubber on the window first and put in a string in the backside grove. Then one person pushed on the outside when another pulled out the string from the inside. And then the "expanding" list. worked out a little easyer :)

I agree if the rubber was pre determined and bonded then you you can string it, and yes with 2 people it is pretty easy, but with the rubber being in a strip, it is difficult to determine the rubber length Also because of the tight radius's the filler tends to stretch and will eventually go back to its natural length - not a big deal as you can cut a bit an pop it in, but sometimes you do not have the oppertunity

Magnus, that's the way I've done it too, with a long piece of nylon string, and the rubber on the window.

Cheers Mike, your videos have been very useful many thanks. I did this job a few months back and it took me a whole day of faffing about. I didn.t really have any option but to do it myself and its a learning experience not to be repeated. My wife told me that she was worried the neighbours would call the police with the expletives coming out being confused for domestic abuse.

Well done Mike for tackling it with the roof rack in place. The first time I did this job I had to cut the holes in the roof as it was a plain roof. With the glass held against the ouside of the roof, just marked around the glass with a felt tipped pen; then marked another line about 1/4" away from the first line. Drilled all along the first line with a small drill then went round again a few more times with a slightly bigger drill each time until I was able to get a key hole saw blade in and join up the holes, push out the piece of aluminium and clean it around the aperture with a half round file. Then I fitted the rubber seal and put washing up liquid in the groove that holds the glass, a bit messy but managed to get the glass in using an old dinner knife with a rounded tip and a blunt edge; without too much trouble. The filler strip was not so easy as I had not got the proper tool. I used the rounded top of a tea spoon handle which I dragged along the groove ahead of the filler strip feeding the strip in a little at a time. Again using washing up liquid. The roof was off the vehicle at the time and on trestles in my garage so easy to work on standing above it. This was for a Series III Land Rover and I also fitted roof vents and a tropical roof panel and full width external windscreen visor. It looked a treat when finished and I wish I still had that Land Rover now. Tom in the wind.

What a ton Of jiggery pokery just to get a bloody alpine in. Your persistence paid off. Well done. Also thanks for the tear down on the VE pump. Was able to rebuild my own with new seals. Happy Christmas.

High again ,I've had plenty of experience with window rubbers,at the factory all the rubbers come out of a heated cupboard they are as soft as butter, speed is of the essence which comes from a long learning period but comes over time ,otherwise as you have admirably demonstrated hard work and perseverance pays off.

That sounds like a great idea. Any idea what temperature they were heated to, without damaging the rubber? 100 degrees C or so?

I put a block and tackle in my carport so I could take off the roof rack by myself at anytime. Lower the block, tie it off on the four corners loosen lift and tie off. Move the vehicle, lower and set aside.

I did both on my Disco one, 3 hours each side! Never again! I did end up using some rubber grease to slot the rubber into the roof and then the fun reeling begins with the glass! Then more rubber grease for the sealing strip, nightmare, I feel your pain Mike!

I wish I hadn’t watched this video it bought back horrible memories! I had never done them before but thought how hard can it be! Let’s give it a go, they’re easy to take out though! I’m impressed you did it in 30 minutes!! Or did you? Ha ha . I replaced the windscreen too all installed until the last 50 cm then CRACK, glass , no thanks I now pay someone else.

Indeed - I have broke a few laminate windows until I discovered WD40 and use a very thick cord to pull in the glass on the windscreen ( I watched some glass fitters! - but they had it easy as it was on a bench on to the car) This is why I do not use soap and water - dries too quick and makes the job harder

Put rubber in boiling water for 5minutes first but make sure to cut rubber about2 inches longer to allow for shrinkage.

I haven't done this job, but for anything involving recalcitrant rubber, I am a convert to silicone rubber lube spray. Nice and slippy, and unlike normal oils it helps condition the rubber and prevent it perishing so quickly.

Hi mike certain jobs I'll do but others I'm more than happy to pay a specialist. Recently had my 90 repainted and had a window fitter replace the windscreen, both alpines, both small rear view windows plus the tailgate glass and he finished the lot within an hour. Well done for persevering though.

I was planning on cutting in some alpine windows on my ninety myself but you are scaring the hell out of me. Oh and There is a plastic tool you can get to re-seat glass and set filler parts that is much safer than a screwdriver. I've seen guys who work on windscreens use it.

This is just the job I've got to look forward to come summertime . It's good to know it's a quick and easy job with minimal faffing . There may be a hint of sarcasm it that last statement LOL. Cheers. Fattrucker

If the roof rack was not on then it is a pretty easy to do as you can 'get at it' - this was like doing keyhole surgery! One thing I should have mentioned was that some roof racks have one leg dropping into the gutter that presses on the rubber - this is not good and can be a cause of leaks, and the racks like that have to come off

The seals seem longer than necessary to make sure that the outer radius of the bends are not under tension, saving them from splitting with age. The same applies to the windscreen seal, which also initially seems too long but needs to be fitted in its total length and squashed in. Warming the seal for a while in hot water helps. But yes, it is a horrible job.

Just done this after watching video. Right tools are key, and two people makes this less painful, getting the glass into the seal is the biggest faff, I'll add two tips to this though. 1. With the filler insert, have your second person holding the fillet in the direction you are going, this stops it twisting and trying to escape. 2. With the filler insert, go slow and with your helper holding the seal straight, put pressure just in front of your tool as it goes in (wheeey) and it should pop the fillet in nicely, it'll just be the radiuses that you may need to do once or twice to stretch it. It's not that painful with two people, would I ever do this job again? Nope, never, ever, ever, it is a swine, you'll understand that when you have done them.

Hi not sure if you can help me I'm after come advice. I've just cut alpine window holes into my roof and have tried to fit the windows. I used a template and cut it correct but the seal is to tight to put the filler strip in. I have dynamat on the inside do you think this could be effecting the tightness of the seal?
@BritannicaRestorations

Just make sure the Dyanamat is nowhere near the aperture of the window - give it a good 2 inch all round The windows are a bugger to fit and very tight Be patient ! Mike

Hi Mike Whats your experience with stripped thread in the block where the fan belt tensioner goes. My 5min job on changing fan belt just became abit longer! Read about ppl on forums that remove the assembly(Where waterpump, Alt and steering pump mounts) drilling the tapped hole thru and trimming with a grindee at rear to fit a hex bolt and have spanner access. I'll try temp repair with threadlock and helicoil thou thinking more permanently
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
I have helicoiled them with good results- BUT you must get the housing square - like on a drill press - you only have one shot I have seen repairs done with nuts and bolts but it looks bad plus you need room for a lock nut as these can shake badly sometimes Getting the housing off is not a bad job - you do not have to remove the crank pulley MIke
@guffiuk
@guffiuk 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks alot Mike Thing is its been helicoiled before according to the bits that came out with the stud. Hence heading in direction of nut and bolt repair for max strenght and life. Will do it with stainless screw from rear and nyloc nut at the front to secure it from shakes, guess a drop of locktite might help too
