It's like that in the original musical as well. The school song choreography in the musical is more fun though imo since the actors are all climbing around on this huge gate. It's really neat!

It is child abuse. Forcing someone to eat is not cool. I hate this scene (in this adaptation and especially the 1996 film). I realize the scenes horrify me because I was brutally forced-fed when I wouldn't eat my vegetables as a child. Nothing like what either Bruce went through in the films. Much worse. It messes with your head and leads to eating disorders. To this day, I am hyper aware of feeding my kids and letting them decide what to eat and how much. While on the outside, I am gentle and loving and know I am giving my children positive associations with food, inside I am a total wreck. The other day, my baby was in the high chair, almost done eating, and was looking at something else in the kitchen, engaged in whatever they were looking at. I mindlessly popped a spoonful in their mouth and they looked surprised. Like I interrupted something with a spoonful of food. They ate it but looked slightly overwhelmed like, "Dude, I was looking at something interesting. I wasn't expecting food!" Mindlessly feeding them like that was seriously nothing to traumatize my child over (my kids will spit food out if they don't want it) but weeks later, I fight feeling wrecked with guilt, like I crossed a line or something. I went to bed crying over it that day. Yeah. Force-feeding messes you up.

@@treefrog1018 Yeah, that's the point of this scene. The Trunchbull wanted Bruce to get sick and throw up. All because he ate her slice of cake. Instead of the usual punishment of detention or him getting her another slice, she wanted t break his spirit too. But Bruce eating the entire cake shows us and the Trunchbull that he's not so easily cowed. :)

First off, this movie does have good lighting and it does feel real. Second off, the whole point of the kids is to show that they were rebellious even when Matilda didn’t show up, which is something the 1996 movie did not do. If anything, the 1996 characters are cardboard cutouts. And the music does fit the tone, it’s happy and cheerful when it needs to be, and sad and moody when it needs to be.

This isn't a reboot. People need to learn the difference between reboot, another adaptation and adaptation from something else. This movie is that 3rd one which is that it's an adaptation of the musical which is based off the novel. NOT a reboot of the Devito movie
