I also stopped eating fast food everyday and now get a takeout lunch once a month as treat. I haven't been to Starbucks for 2 years after going 3 days a week. I am now adding to the list of no more candy or ready baked desserts. I have a 8 month emergency fund, a car I paid cash for and no credit card debt.

Girl this is such solid advice! I was a single mom of 3 and I can tell you having no money caused me to have sleepless nights, anxiety and I’m sure it affected the way I parented. Having a large emergency fund now has changed my life. Just in the perspective of the quality of peace I have in my life. Number one advice to any woman- save some money!!!

omg, Kate -- your story of the convo with the attorney -- HOLY MOLY. I'm pretty certain I know who you're talking about as I found a female lawyer "offering guidance" to woman facing divorce. This was about 4-5 years ago. I almost contacted her. Horrifying to hear the non-support, judgment you received. You are AWESOME and so helpful for so many women feeling helpless and scared. BLESS YOU.

In light of the craziness of 2020, it almost seems like people should save a fully funded emergency fund and then attack debt. Life is just crazy at this point so we need to focus on what we can control.

To build your emergency fund, make it consistent. I save a set amount every month that is a part of the budget that comes out just like a bill. I do not save what's left after spending but save before and then work with what's left.

It's really tempting to spend an unexpected windfall on fun items...but my best tip to build an emergency fund is to bank those windfalls (tax return, bonus, raise at work, gift from family) and use it to jump start your savings. You'll build momentum and you never miss the money because you weren't expecting it or counting on it anyway.

Kate. As a family law paralegal I am shocked! I cannot believe you were treated like that. I am so sorry. We have such compassion for our clients and we really genuinely care about them and we make sure that they are safe and provided for. That is horrible the way this woman spoke with to you. She is no so-called expert. Love your video! An emergency fund is so important! When the water pipe burst in our house and we had to fight for months with our homeowners insurance if it wasn’t for our emergency fund I don’t know where we would’ve been. Actually I do...we would’ve been back in debt.

Sorry to hear you had to deal with that horrible woman. Some women can be judgmental & mean towards other women. I used to have a manager who looked down on single mothers & treated them real horrible. She won’t let them leave work to go pick up their kids from daycare or school when they get a call that their kids are sick. She said it’s not her problem that these women don’t have a spouse or partner to help them out.

Kate, I got divorced in 1998, my kids were 4 &7.. My mother-in-law at the time told me I was living in a fantasy land and I would never survive. My father-in-law only asked me "After all babysitting he's done for you?!" True story.

Your heart is immense. And I’m sooo glad you knew how WRONG her advice was. I kind of think it would be cool - if you still had her info to let her know your story and that she could really make the difference for a lot of people - especially women . Maybe no one told her how they were made to feel. I applaud you Kate. And you are right - No matter what a woman’s financial situation- Ive heard other women entrepreneurs tell women of walks of life- because of the unknown, Could be illness could be job loss could be Covid etc etc - Get that emergency fund so that you have pressure taken off. Your message will help MANY. I have always had much respect for single parents. I’m sure it was not their first choice but circumstances make it so. let’s support people - Especially like you said when we don’t know their circumstance at all. the nerve of that lawyer. I hope she’s not practicing anymore. Kate you are a wealth of knowledge and are a darn good person. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thumbs up Kate! It's also a great idea to have a binder or USB drive with all accounts, insurances, credit/debit cards, employer and benefits, health directives, location of important docs, and more in a safe place and to know current status of financials etc. One partner should not know and do all, and the other has no knowledge, in case something happens and then they are in the dark and in distress. If single, these documents will help someone be able to take care of things if something happens.

I feel like divorce is a very important topic when discussing finances. I was decimated financially in my divorce. And I was blindsided and definitely wasn’t prepared for the financial landline. I have to pay my xhusband a substantial amount of alimony which is no longer a viable federal tax deduction. I’m fortunate in that he didn’t ask for any of my retirement. Anyway I’m rebuilding and making slow and steady progress. Building my emergency fund gives me tremendous peace.

This lawyer was just looking at basic things. In 60s my mother divorced with no thought of the future. She wanted to party. Unfortunately this meant my brother and I lived in poverty for the rest of our childhood. My father always paid his child support but that was not much. She had no additional training. Everyone told her she was making a mistake but she would not listen. She had a brand new house and drove around in a convertible. Partying got old. Having no food and groceries to feed children due to mismanagement. Having rented house with no assist to maintain. Electric and water turned off...as you said that lawyer did not know you and she may have seen the things I did. I am a white haired person now and in a different age group. You have done well. I also lost 50# weight when I cut out sodas.

Just because you have an education doesn’t mean you are intelligent. Thank goodness your younger self was smart enough to know that lawyer was giving you bad advice! You seem very happy in your life right now you’ve clearly made some very intelligent decisions!

I was a single mom for 10 years with a 2 and 3 year old. I struggled for awhile. My advise for single moms/parents is you will overcome it as long as you keep going :) You can do it! It takes some dedication and work but you can do it!

I think children of divorce, myself included, can be very scared of instability because of the immense change divorce can put on a household. Emergency funds can add such an important foundation of safety that we may not have grown up with or seen our parents have. Money may not buy happiness but it can buy security which you need to feel so you aren't stuck under the thumb of fear and making decisions based on anxiety.

I like the story you gave on why you started building an emergency fund! I have never gone through that or any situation like that! But if I knew anybody or meet anybody that has been through that, I can just share this video with them! And you are a very driven and strong single woman! I am glad you didn’t believe the single mom stigma that you need someone to support you! When I first started my emergency fund, I saved cans and changed it in for money! Then I did some babysitting for money! And I cut out coffee and started making my own and saving the coffee shop cups to refill it’s for iced coffee! And then I started doing monthly automatic transfers from my checking to my savings account! And then I started cutting my cell phone carriers to cheaper Version! And now I am with cri cricket Wireless and only paying $35! I sound like I am promoting or being sponsored by cricket wireless! Ha ha but these are some of the ways I used to save up $500 in near months, all at the same time though!

Good job Kate; now lets talk about what to do when you have your emergency fund. Ok here is what I do, I just keep building the fund until I have enough to start making my money working for me and that does not mean just leaving it in the bank with no interest, it means putting it into emerging markets, like silver, pot stocks, hydrogen fuel cell companies, lithuim battery manufactuers, solar companies, wind companies, drone companies, artificial intellegence companies, water companies, people you have to look at the big picture here, Biden is going green and not looking back he is going for renewable energy sources and the elimination of all fossil fuels, he is also going to be part of the Pairs Climate accord and the UN agenda 2030. So I am telling you this so you can get in on the ground floor of these new concepts and make your money work for you now and in the future. And if your going to invest only invest in the best of the best of these companies, you want winners not losers. These are suggestions only and if one is unsure of how to invest you can always go to a stock advisor to seek advice but also remember that these people donot work for free and you will pay a fee everytime you buy or sell a stock. Personally I use the internet to size up companies before I buy anything, that seems to work for me. Its your future and your choice all the way.

Omg Kate what a horrible thing for that so called woman lawyer said to you. My first lawyer I went to to divorce my ex took what money I borrowed from my dad and ran away. He partner then took over and took my money and only got him to sign the papers to sell the house. No divorce no child support nothing. Very expensive for both lawyers and didn’t get much from it. I was young 24 year old with four year old son. ❤️❤️
