A tip I recently discovered. Become friends with your local small farmers. I get farm fresh eggs with gorgeous shell colors and even some double yolks for $2.50. They also started selling whole chickens for about the same price as the whole chickens in the grocery store, except the chickens from this small family farm are free range and are heritage breeds. They're also in the beginning stages of raising heritage breed hogs. No more factory farm eggs and chicken for me!

Clean your refrigerator out weekly. I take all the food out of each shelf, clean the shelf and make sure we eat all the food before I go to the grocery store. We are a family of six and there is never ever any wasted food in this house. And eat off a salad plate. We do not need as much food as you think. Eat the five thrive fiber, greens, healthy fat, complex carb and protein each meal. You will be full for longer and save money if you eat this way.

Yes, last time I ordered I was laying down on my couch and just put what I thought I needed but then, before ordering I went to the fridge and pantry only to find I could take a lot from the cart 😁 That felt good, just saved a lot I can say! You always think you will remember but I sure don't 😅

Another thing: I’m single and live in an apartment complex. Have become friends with a neighbor who is also single. We cat sit for each other. And share food. I have too many eggs, I give them to her. She usually makes pound cake and shares with me and other neighbors. Last night, she brought me several pieces of homemade quiche! I’ve had this food sharing with a housemate before. She and her husband lived upstairs and I lived in the downstairs flat. If you’re open to this kind of food sharing, it’s a wonderful thing.❤️

I'm a single person household and I have wonderful neighbors a couple of whom are also single gals. Over the 25 years we've been neighbors we've become very good friends and often share meals together particularly in the summer when it's nice. We will grill and we kind of take turns supplying the meat and then everybody chips in whatever they happen to have available for sides or dessert. We've put together some really good last minute meals that we've been able to share with one another. The other thing we share our club memberships. My neighbor belongs to Costco and I belong to Sam's. I'm disabled so she does most of the shopping but will pick up whatever I put on my list at either club and then when she is there she will pick it up. We usually get to each Club about once a month. I don't buy a lot of items at the club stores but it's definitely enough savings to justify the membership. I like both Costco and Sam's I know there are a lot of people who are devotees of one or the other but there are certain things that I like from each of the clubs that the other one doesn't carry. There are also a lot of items that are common to both clubs and I will often have her pick it up based on price or brand preference. I just watched the sales at both clubs to see what is coming up on sale and what I can stock up on to save money. Fortunately I have a small upright freezer so I can store some extra Frozen items which definitely helps. Such a great thing to have good neighbors to share with! Food is so expensive and you definitely don't want to waste anything that you don't have to. You can also check into what can be frozen. I believe one KZfaqr that I watched did freeze eggs. I don't specifically recall how she did it but I believe the channel is called She's In Her Apron. It is surprising all the things that you really can freeze and they work great when thought. That's another way that I try to save money by buying frozen items that will give me the longest shelf life.

Many, many years ago we switched from plastic food storage to glass and metal. Then we drifted towards glass which could go in the freezer, fridge, microwave, and also oven; it eliminated the exploding glass and the "you used WHAT where!" problems. As an unintended but good consequence, I discovered that we grew less fuzz and fewer science experiments with clear storage containers in the fridge.

I grocery shopped yesterday at 2 different Walmarts, Food Lion and Dollar Tree. I ended up saving 25% by using a combination of strategies:a food coupon, buying close-out items that were half price, finding lower price items at a different store. 9-V batteries were NINE $ for 2 at WM. Found them for $1.25 each at Dollar Tree. Found 3 organic avocados at WM for $1.98 on sale. I work from a list. Find lower priced substitutions. Just say no to overpriced items. Plus, I’ve been doing Intermittent Fasting since May. Have lost 20 pounds. Only eat one or 2 meals a day. Feel better. Thank you, Kate, and everyone🥰

I agree Katherine. I am a big used store shopper and find prices fluctuate all over the place. Decided I won't spend it unless I think it's fairly priced! Just not worth it. My $ goes to fast as it is!

@@judymcpheron5955 For an assortment of reasons, we are now shopping at more different stores than what it seems ever before. Keeping track of prices store to store is probably generating more mental acuity than the games and puzzled designed to keep your brain "sharp". I've found that honing in on a select number or groupings of grocery store items at a time makes this more possible. When I've filled the shelves, or larder, of enough or enough for now then I move on to concentrate on different groupings of things. Meanwhile, the general prices of the previous items of special interest don't just go away and I can readily spot a good to great price. I'm finding that I'm able to "feel" a good to great price in a couple ofmthe stores we shop via a combination of product placement and signage. One example was some cheese we bought that felt like it was a good price, certainly an acceptable price, so we bought some quantity (not super quantity but enough for the freezer too). Checking prices after we bought it, it was at least $1.50 more per 2lb brick elsewhere at the time, $3.50 more per brick within 2 weeks, and at least $8 more last time we checked; as the prices were going up we slowed down our consumption and still have a couple of bricks in the freezer. We did similar on some special sized, "bonus size" of 40oz Folgers coffee for either $6.49 or $6.69 and bought the remaining 11 jugs on the shelf 'cause without honestly knowing, it felt like at least a good price. Just 4 months at the most later, that Folgers is about 1/2 the price per unit than the house brand we more normally buy.

Amen to online shopping! I am disabled and no longer drive. I have amazing wonderful neighbors who used to do my grocery shopping for me prior to online shopping being so readily available. I have numerous stores from which to choose and I do use home delivery. This year I have a membership to W+ from Walmart. Overall, they have the lowest everyday prices on groceries. Unfortunately in my situation I can't really shop at the different stores for the loss leaders. Occasionally I do ask a neighbor to pick up something if it is a smoking good deal and they are usually happy to do that. The other big tip I have is to shop less frequently. I am up to doing a bigger shopping trip once about every 3 weeks or so. I do usually need a gallon of milk in between that time but otherwise I make the groceries last. This means overall I spend less on those items and since I'm only going once I make sure to make the trip count. I too appreciate being able to see the total accumulate in my virtual cart so that I can make adjustments if needed on quantities or items. I typically buy store brands of most things and I have cut back on prepared frozen entrees and snacks that are too easy to buy since I'm in a one-person household. Great tips Kate! Thanks so much and have a great weekend!

Get a chuck roast. I used my crockpot this week because it was 109 degrees here in N Calif and I didn’t want to turn on the oven. We are not used to this heat. Chuck roasts are reasonable. The two meals we make with them are 1. French dip sandwiches (add beef stock and get rolls) and 2. Shredded beef tacos. (add a jar of salsa). Chucks are often on sale. 😉

I always suggest discount grocery stores to help save money. If you are in the Lewiston Maine area, Holiday Bargain Outlet is amazing! I can get loaves of gluten free bread for $2 a loaf and specialty chips for $1 a bag! And my favorite crockpot meal is just a beef roast with a jar of salsa and whatever seasoning you want. super simple and delish!!

This month I am taking part in ‘shelftember’ and using up overlooked items in my grocery cupboards, fridge and freezer. So far I’ve used a tin of jackfruit, cooking chocolate, have plans to use some lentils, coconut milk and custard powder. I love the idea of ‘crock toner’ and will definitely be taking part. A waste / money saving tip I do is to dump any fruit in a freezer bag that’s on its way out such as squishy grapes, uneaten apple slices, overlooked kiwi etc to freeze and use in smoothies.

In April/ May we entered the produce department with a $10 budget to guy as much produce as we could to last the week. We bought a pretty big head of cabbage, a big bunch of celery, and 10 pounds of carrots. Yes, egads 10 pounds of carrots. The 10 pound bag of carrots for a shade under $5 were the best looking carrots of all the groupings, sizes, and packages of carrots. When we got home we did begin to look on line for carrot recipies and used a number of them although they weren't familiar. We learned 2 things. The first was to be adaptable. The second was to scour the fresh produce department for the best deals in terms of meals for the money; and for us, set a general budget amount even when we have more than $10 to spend. - We also look at the price of frozen veggies then decide if we're buying fresh, frozen, or a mix.

We have paused a bit for an assortment of reasons but looking over the partially prepared and prepared items on the pantry shelf to identify what you are eating then looking for recipies to make them from scratch saves money. In some cases, you may need to buy an ingredient or few so the up front cost may be more expensive. For example, brown sugar is simply molasses and white table sugar blended or food processed together. Many don't have a jar of molasses on the shelf (try Brer Rabbit mild or medium) but by the second batch you can be saving money of you buy a smaller jar. Many of the condiments can be made cheaper from scratch although you are likely to have to buy things like soy sauce. Just look at the things you buy, look on line for a recipie including the brand name, and consider if it is something you might want to tackle.

Then I made honey sesame chicken in crockpot which we served w broccoli and rice. Following nite sausage on grill and leftover potatoe casserole from sun nite. Now we can shred remainder of chicken over a salad tonite. It is great!! No stopping for pizza

Save this! I rarely buy snacks but discovered a delicious one at Costco and knew self control would be tough. I use the same snack size baggie every work day and put about 5 pcs in instead of the 8 pc portion size. This prevents me from eating 16 pcs! I love the idea of Crocktober! I love crockpot meals and since I'm alone, I freeze portions for later and bring some for Dad's freezer. I have two credit cards that get paid in full and have a cheat list on my phone for the one that pays more for certain things like groceries. I remembered you saying the algorithm or something was important and I tried to get up in time to watch live but didn't make it. I hope watching this early helps!

Save this! Three things come to mind. #1 I write the date on an item when I open it which helps me to know how fast I'm using something. #2 I inventory our fridge/freezer/pantry each week and then make the menu for the week trying to use what I have on hand before opening my recipes. #3 For our ice coffee we normally put 5 scoops in the filter which resulted in 10 scoops for two batches. We've learned to save the 5 scoops from the first batch and add an additional 2 scoops for making the second batch. Then we begin again with a fresh batch.

For a meatless meal, Mom used to make lentils & macaroni. It's a can of Progresso lentil soup doctored up with onions, garlic and macaroni. As an adult, I now add spinach too. It used to feed 3 of us when we were kids. I also shop the Latino store for better savings. I scored boneless chicken breast recently. my favorite hack is the "one more day" strategy. I often go shopping on pay day because the grocery store is near my bank so I do it in one run. However, I have been trying to wach pay day wait one more day before I go to do my run and push myself to figure out what I can eat fom what is in the house. These are not my geatest culinary accomplishments nor probably the healthiest meals but they cut down on waste and save me money. I am currently on the first of a "two more day" plan and made a batch of muffins for breakfasts, had a pizza bagel for lunch (last bagel was semi stale but fine for this), dinner tonight is the last of the veggies from the bin to make a salad with the last scoop of cottage cheese, Tomorrow will make a mac and cheese and pull together an egg dish) It is just a little way to help and then I will only need to plan for 12 days instead of 14 in my shopping. I also love to use my apps (I use Fetch, Rakuten, Ibotta, Upside and my Staples Rewards help me buy cleaning products). I have been just saving them all and have $195 from this year - and I have a small household of one. Good video

SAVE THIS! Totally love doing the chopped concept. I ALWAYS order my groceries online, it's the easiest way to stay on budget. I'm also a fan of what I call "kitchen sink" meals... basically if I have random things leftover, I put it together for a meal. For instance, the last few slices of lunch meat, with a side of some sliced cucumber, and a bit of leftover pasta. Not necessarily a meal one would think of but it uses up random leftovers! P.S. Another great cash back app for receipts is ReceiptPal!

I’ve gotten priced out on lunchmeat. I’ve been either making pizza for the kids to take in their lunch or using a rotisserie chicken to provide slices or chunks of meat for their sandwiches. I can actually get 20 sandwiches out if one $4.99 Costco chicken and there’s no way I could get 20 sandwiches out of $5 of lunchmeat.

Save this! Yes to Crocktober please. I keep an inventory of my pantry and freezers and when the ads come out, I look at the loss leaders and do my meal planning. I pick up sales to replenish my pantry. Making extra and freezing means you always have a quick meal. I rotisserie a whole chicken and use it for like three or more meals such as tacos, soup, enchiladas, chicken salad, including the first night chicken dinner and bone broth. Same with a roast - makes multiple meals. When there's a great sale I stock up and get rain checks when possible.

Amazing list of inspiration! My #1hack is "food rescue". Go to the grocery store dumpster after closing. If on public property, you can do it! We now get about 70% of our groceries like this and loooots to share w family and friends and to donate to foodbanks. 🙌🙏 Bonus, you never know what you are going to get, so exciting and get to be creative with our meals 😂

I hope you have some new tips for me!! I have to change my diet, AGAIN, thanks to a surgery I had in March and the related complications. No simple carbs or sugar, they make me feel horrid.

I absolutely agree with you about ordering a delivery instead of going in person. Order your food then look at it and see what you can take away. I love delivery and the tip is staying in my community to people that are working a side hustle. The only issue with this is some items are unavailable and you need to change your meal plan

I like using my calculator app when I grocery shop to see how much I'm spending as I go on. My stores in my area doesn't always have a lot of non-name brand options so if I have to buy the more expensive option in say a dry food item i will maybe decide to buy a lower priced meat item instead of the one I wanted originally. Also I don't know if others do this, but because I shop with my parter I always take a few minutes before I head to the cash to look through everything in my cart to see if I made any impulse buys. I always find a few unnecessary items that would throw me over budget lol

Favorite quote: Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. Clothespins and pants hangers (clips snapped off) to use as bag clips. My favorite recipe has no recipe at all: Kitchen sink meatloaf- any grain and egg as filler and binder and whatever veggies you have plus ground meat...ta da!

Because of health issues I've been using grocery pick up since COVID. It does eliminate impulse grabs. We try to have a 3% or less food waste. I put bits of the and that in the freezer to repurpose for future meals. I do periodically pull expiring food from pantry and list older items in freezer! That's where I meal plan from the next week. Great video. We can do all of these it just takes time and commitment.

Morning Kate great video, I love my slow cooker(crock pot)I use it most days in autumn/winter and about twice a week during the rest of the year. There is nothing better than been at work all day and coming home to a lovely meal ready to plate up as soon as I walk through the door. I prep everything the evening before so I just need to tip it into the pot and switch it on in the morning.

Check the weekly ads for your grocery stores online! For me the driving force is finding the "lowest price per pound" on meat, pork, chicken or fish. Then it's off to the produce or freezer section to find the veggies to go along. Making a couple of mostly veggie meals is good way to save money too. Chopped cabbage is a real meal stretcher and delicious in soups or fried with onion & Kielbasa sausage slices! A big bowl of green beans with a little diced ham and cornbread is delicious. Tuna Melts are great for lunch and cheap! Scrambled eggs mixed into Rice A Roni and leftover meat and veggies is cheap and delicious.
