Hey I know these videos are from a few years ago but I wanted to say I’m just starting out in the hobby and I have been watching video after video on KZfaq trying to learn as much as possible and your videos have been by far and away the most helpful, they’re very informative and you make them very easy to understand from a layman’s point of view. In everything man has accomplished, its easier to sell something, instead of giving knowledge of what is really going on... You have a totally different aspect from almost everyone else and I used to be an old time reef keeper 25 years ago and want to jump back in but on a much smaller scale and I am so happy to find your videos.

we used live rock in all our aquariums in the lab in 1993, and we used it in our home aquariums as well...

BTW 54 years of freshwater keeping, into my 4th year reef keeping. 6 reef tanks, 10 freshwater maintained. Read everything from quality journals, scientific literature and books. A lot of promotion goes on without scientific understanding. Great job you do. Looking forward to hearing more.

Thanks for the knowledge, looking into a foray into nano reef, have been watching everything I could find (the videos you probably talked about) was ready to shop for ‘dry rock’ over ‘live rock’.

I 100% agree with you about the beneficial effects of live rock. I live in Indonesia and my home is only 1 mile away from the sea. I am traveling to rural islands for the last 15 years. There are huge huge amount of live rocks. Even our people used them to build their houses since centuries. The rocks are still there, because they are reproduced from dead corals and other creatures. Yes you are right, the ban was mostly about political issues. Most farmers went armer during the time.

More than 40 yrs ago I used to have a marine tank with under gravel filtration, that’s how long ago it was, 😂 fish only setup and fish that with live for many many years, I started up with a marine tank again about 5 yrs ago when I retired, and was shocked with all the new methods used today, is it me or does it just make the hobby more strenuous? I use NSW, and talking to the company by the same name NSW I was told that some of their clients still use under gravel filtration which also houses corals etc. But due to ill health I have to downsize from a 300ltr tank to a Fluval Sea evo, hence why I am interested in your videos. Looking forward to watching the rest of them 👍

What brand is the pico reef in the video?

Most don’t read and study the literature and data. You explain and discuss live rock and micro marine ecology that most don’t understand. Or accept.

thanks for the information would you recommend a mix of what you called dead rock and live rock or only live rock. I just started a nano tank and have put rock in it from my old 500lt that I pulled down 5 years ago due to costs just wondering if i should replace it all or just add a kilo or so if i can get it

How many fish would you recommend for this tank? i have a 20l nano with 2 small clowns and some snails at the moment and looking to upsize slightly.

It will be my first saltwater tank....I was going to get this ....but upgrade to the acrylic media baskets to eliminate the sponge.....now would it be good to get this or should I go bigger with a couple HOB filters....any opinions would be helpful

I bought dry rock for one reason... I want to have as little impact on reefs as possible. Which is why I only buy frags. Coral reefs are dying across the world as is, they don't need our help by ripping it off the ocean.

plz u help i have load old live rock with old frend had dumped in loft oveasly now dead dry rock but wondering your thorts on bleach cleen exetra exetra so tank safe and ading some true live rock with it as wood like to use it as some realy nice looking bits

Well, got the same in my industry. There is a twit that thinks he knows what he is talking about and has published book on it, not that I have read it. I don't think he is really worked one day in the industry. Just a talking head. As far as this I started out at as a lad of 13. Did it for a number of years, got out of it because of all of the moving around different nations. Got back into it around 40, changed jobs three time which the last was a lay off which lasted for 4 years sadly and now at 61 am giving it a go again. So, yes I know the feeling.
