I used to troubleshoot noise issues with cables regularly, there are a few things to keep in mind: Segregate your cables into groups, 1. Mains cable 2. Digital signals 3. Audio cables. Keep each group at least 300mm apart. Don't loop cables in a circle, loop them in a figure 8 Cross cables at right angles If you need to run trunking of different cables close to each other, use metal trunking or add a bonded metal plate between them. Use balanced pairs wherever possible. You can make a balanced pair single ended and vice versa with a balun, they're common for microphones as they reduce hum (there's also a Beatles track where Paul used one with his bass, I forget which) If using screened cables (like your audio link between the rooms) then only ground the screen *at one end* otherwise you'll get ground loops (which you'll hear as hum). At the other end heat shrink them and tie them back, that way they're there if you ever need them but it's also obvious that they aren't connected. Same with the overall screen. Make sure if they go through a breakout box or a junction box that the screen is continuous (remains connected). You talk about buying an empty consumer unit and then show a populated one! :p Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a populated one and take out the bits you don't need, though I'd put the sockets on a RCD anyway. If you do get issues with tripping breakers due to current spikes during turn on (unlikely, but anyway), you can use class C or even class D breakers (the ones you showed were class B) which allow a higher current for a short duration before tripping. Try to balance the loads on the three phases (within reason). The electrician will know all about that though. You can never have enough sockets ;) If you want to get super nerdy you can put all of your noisy stuff on one ring main (PCs, anything with a switched mode power supply) and all of the audio gear on another. A common trick is to use different coloured faceplates to denote this. Now might be the time to consider a UPS for the PC and anything that would lose data on a power loss, you could run all the noisy stuff through that (which the UPS has the added benefit of isolating from the mains and thereforer reducing noise carry over)

THIS GUY, has some goodies worth of advice! Yes sir! I am on it! We in the USA and Puerto Rico are stuck with 125V at 15A/20A but I will say I can do what you suggest just the same. Now, we do not use ring circuits here. Would that be recommended with our higher amperage? Or stick to the radial as is common in the US and Europe? Also, here in the US we have what is known as ISOLATED EARTH and SURGE SUPPRESSOR protected circuits for equipment and for us nerdy types, the added UPS isolated power systems as well.. But the amps and half volts of UK is something I did not consider, as we just use thicker wire here that is also HARDER(copper mixed with tin).
@gavster89
@gavster89 3 жыл бұрын
@@pianokeyjoe the ring circuit just allows you higher current rating (32A) than a radial (16A) for the same wire size - yes there are plenty of good and bad reasons for ring vs. radial and vice versa, but I would use whatever works best within the allowances of your electrical standards - I think if I lived in North America I'd be tempted to just run 220V everywhere lol ;) Yes they just added surge suppression to the latest regs here (BS7671 18th edition) but I'll admit, I haven't read up on where it is needed. The isolated earth is presumably related to the centre tapping on the supply transformer, something that we don't have in the UK as we get 240V direct. Glad you found it useful 😊
@pianokeyjoe
@pianokeyjoe 3 жыл бұрын
@@gavster89 Oh how I was tempted to do just that.. 250V at 15A or 20A but here in the USA it is as you say, centre tapped transformer with 125V on either side. But then again, I was thinking of using 24VDC and 12VDC power system in my studio since MOST modern electronics runs on 12VDC on average, and 24VDC for security electronic devices. I am doing a mix. UK and US sockets for my 125V mains, and Australian sockets for the DC 12VDC/9VDC power system to power the tons of music keyboards that I own that use either of those voltages. Amperage would be what ever max I can get away with, not to exceed 10A per socket point. RCDs(GFCIs), and Surge suppressors have to be US due to the special electronics inside so sadly I can not use UK brass plated RCDs here.. at least not the UK made ones. I can use the French made LEGRAND rcd sockets and the Italian made VIMAR and BTICINO brands since those are dual voltage and those brands ARE used in the USA and Caribbean.

Hi Gavin. I bought a Behringer U-Phoria UMC 1820 interface a while ago and I get significant noise, but *only* when I plug the USB connection into my PC. I'm using unbalanced audio cables coming from a couple of modern Korg synths (a Minilogue XD and Wavestate). The output from the UMC 1820 itself goes into a smaller Behringer 802 mixer (along with my PC sounds and an Amazon Alexa thing.) Apologies in advance for asking for free help, but do you think the problem might be that the audio cables I'm using are unbalanced, or is it the way I've plugged the U-Phoria into a mixer? I know virtually nothing about this stuff. Anything you could suggest would be gratefully received.
@gavster89
@gavster89 3 жыл бұрын
@@tuppswahey I'm just glad people are reading the comment ;) unbalanced cables should be fine over short distances, it sounds like you have a ground loop on the USB port, some USB audio devices have a ground lift switch but I don't think your UMC 1820 does. I would try a different USB cable and do some Googling of "USB ground lift" and you'll find all sorts. You say the PC sound goes in too, perhaps try unplugging that and see if the issue goes away - the ground on the audio and the ground on the USB are probably connected in the PC. Perhaps see if you can use optical out from your PC to break that loop.

I'm 58 and took a 30 years absence from my saxophone. Now into digital wind instrument. Dr Mix makes making music look so much fun. So before I was just a teen playing my saxophone to the goats that we had in the barn while growing up. Now that there is so more fun electronic synth and loop station to play with to mix with. Seeing a whole new way to have fun making music. Took me about a couple of weeks to get my scales exercise up to speed. But now with a RC 202 loop station, I make a beat track and a backtrack harmony setup and then improvisation of the digital Sax on whatever I make. I never know what I am going to do, but keep working on making loops.

This is the most useful (to me) episode of the series so far. I think I could listen to Clive talk about good studio electrical practices all day. I’m set up in Canada (where electrical standards are the same as US), and as of today I have learned that the UK/European standards are more studio-friendly. Well at least the voltage anyway. Hi Claudio. I’d like to add some comments: Probably you’d like to put some sort of surge protection (the peak voltages that were mentioned) for your equipment. Surges can also come from the outside of your building and the division onto different phases protects you only from surges generated by your own stuff like eg the AC. Maybe you would also consider online UPS devices that in addition to surge protection also clean the current and in case of power failure your equipment would stay on for some minutes to allow an orderly shut down. Then I would put the higher spec Ethernet cables in, as they are difficult to change afterwards. Cat 6 should be good , but maybe you should allow some extra beef for future applications. As audio cables, Ethernet cables should be run separate from power cables, to avoid interference. You could also install a switch in each room and interconnect them with fiber cables. In that manner you won’t have any interference issues. It’s a bit more expensive though. Hope this is useful

Hey Claudio, before you buy a multichannel snake between your A and B and C rooms, i’d strongly recommend thinking about running a few more CAT6 cables instead. DANTE is a very low latency, uncompressed audio transport protocol, and it’s matrix by design. You can route any single input channel to any single output channel, making it infinitely more flexible than analog cables. You can insert audio of softwares on a computer directly into the system, or you can have a 64 channel recording interface onto any laptop for about £40. It’s a very versatile solution for long years in stage productions, festivals, etc. Though, it’s not that cheap yet.. Keep up the good work! Best, Dan
