In this episode of Studio Wiring I'm going to answer questions I get music out to the console and how I print my mixes back into my DAW. This has come up quite a bit so I go into a LOT of detail and have some cool diagrams to break it all down. Plus...............
I cover a few ways to add a setup like this or a summing mixer to your setup at home and I tell you WHY I love working on the console so much. It's really pretty simple but you have to watch the video to find out.

Great content, and explained simple! You’re right about the hands on connection to the music. We are the “final”interface after all. ‘Cause we are listening. Analog does add the mojo.🙏

Just watched and learned a lot from your detailed description of wiring a console with interfaces and converters👍 Much appreciated cuz I’m thinking about purchasing a Trident 68 as well. Any issues with that console so far? Thanks, I subscribed and am looking forward to more✌️

Do you max the gain from ITB so as to minimize the console hum as much as possible? Great stuff man.

Great video. I wanted to chime in about interfaces. The motu 16a is awesome. 16 TRS ins and outs. OR if you need a crap ton of IO, you could get a 24Ai which is 24 TRS inputs, and a 24Ao for 24 outputs. Personally, I just try to get everything into the box, and I like having my stuff always patched and ready to hit record. So currently i'm using a Motu 16A AND a 24Ai. Super stoked on them both!

Hey Jamie! My work varies so much nothing is ever patched the same. Keeps things interesting for sure! I was actually disappointed when they broke the 24i/o up into the 24Ao and 24Ai. The original 24i/o was 24 ins and outs in one rack space. Not that they aren't good units but having that much i/o in one rack space was awesome. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

@@Ultimatestudiosinc Is the MOTU connected to the Computer as well, so Motu and Apogee into DAW same time?
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc 4 жыл бұрын
@@drumgod666 Yes. The MOTU is actually the main i/o expect for printing mixes. However, when I'm mixing the MOTU only sends OUT to the console and the only audio coming back into the DAW is through the Rosetta. When I'm tracking the MOTU is sending in and out.

Hey Charlie! Could you help me? I'm just about to get my Motu 24 i/o... l'm wondering how to listen in my monitors and send a stereo headphone singnal to recording room during a recording session. Now l use Saffire pro 40 wich has dedicated monitors and headphones outs. I don't know how to do that with Motu 24 i/o.
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Stefano! The 24 i/o doesn’t have dedicated monitor outs like some units do. You’ll need some sort of monitoring station to connect with your monitors. Presonus makes a couple and Mackie has the Big Knob. I’m sure there are others too. Those units also allow you to have a couple of headphone mixes and I believe they have talkback capabilities built in too.

Hello there, Charlie. Great video! You are an inspiration to us. By the way, I'm Raymond, from Manila, Philippines. Just to update us all, may I ask if you are still using your Apogee Rosetta 200 or have you upgraded this paricular unit for your print chain? If so, what A/D unit are you using now?

i've been in the box since i started and i'm now considering a hybrid set up by introducing a summing mixer. i am currently recording with a apollo twin and a laptop with plugins. if i wanted to introduce a summing unit what else would i need. it seems to get a bit confusing. i seen a summing box by Dangerous d box and a rupert neve 5059 but they seem to be completely different things. if i was to purchase the 5059 would that be overkill? and if not are there any additional pieces outside of wires that i would have to purchase to get every thing to play nice? i'm mixing hip hop and rand b.

Great video. I’m running Logic Pro X. All software synth stuff so, all my music is made internally. Bought a big SoundCraft mixer. 16 channels. So I need all that music to come out, spread across the board. I have a pair of Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 audio interfaces (haven’t connected yet). Both are 8 in/10 out plus adat ins and outs blah blah. Just focusing on the analog outs. In MY mind? I am thinking running the 8 outs of one interface, to the first 8 inputs channels on the board and same thing with the other interfaces 8 outs, to the other 8 on the board. For a total of 16. But hers is the confusing part. Some tracks in the DAW can be stereo, and show up as one channel (stereo channel). How would that work running that channel to a mixer channel that is mono? Ex: Stereo synth showing up on DAW channel 1, going out ~~~~> to mixer channel one (mono). No longer a stereo sound 🤷🏽‍♂️

Ok..... In beginner's term, I have only a 355 Dual 31 Band EQ, a Behringer Super X Pro Crossover, and a Benringer Multicom Pro-XL Dynamic Processor, and 2 power amplifiers. Please, please, please tell me how to hook this up, to my laptop and a analog mixer. No, I do not have a patchbay nor interface. I wanna get the sounds from my laptop, to the Mixer, from the Mixer to the Crossover, from the Crossover to the Processor, from there to the power amps.

Trying get my head around this. Doing a full rewire and adding a SC GB8 48 channel board. It doesn’t have monitor ins on each channel. Can you run back through the line ins instead? I would assume so, but my brain is scrambled. Lol. Would this cause a problem with the 1:1 half normal setup when trying to (example) send out from daw through channel strips (via inputs) and then out the direct outs back to daw? Or do you setup separate input and output channels in your daw? I may have just answered my own question. Lol Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated…
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew! First off congrats on getting the Soundcraft! If I'm not mistaken the SC uses the Mix B section as the "monitor" section. This way you can operate it as an inline console. I don't setup separate ins and outs in the DAW. If I'm recording an monitoring analog on the console I do 1:1, 2:2, etc.. However since everything is in the patchy I could set any one of my channels ITB to go out any output necessary. I do the 1:1, 2:2, etc. because I don't want to have to patch anything to be able to monitor. Same goes for my headphone system. I have 16 dedicated outputs that go directly to the headphone monitors. Whatever I want to go to the headphones I use and AUX send ITB to those outputs and it goes directly to the headphone system. Those outputs are also in the patchbay so I can still use them for other things when mixing but I have to patch them in at that point.

Hey man dumb question... the Motu and the apogee are both Firewire into your Tower, so how do you get your DAW to recognize both firewire connections at the same time?
@Ultimatestudiosinc
@Ultimatestudiosinc 3 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all! At the time of making this video I was running them both back to the same computer. To do this I would make an "aggregate device" in the Audio/Midi setup and then select that device in the DAW. The Apogee shows up as an additional 2 channels. Now I actually have the Apogee connected to a dedicated laptop just for printing. This makes the workflow easier. But the aggregate device worked well too. The only downside was the latency because the Rosetta is FW400. Does that make sense?

@@Ultimatestudiosinc Holy light pipe Batman! Yes!! I didn't know you could do that. Thank you so much for sharing. And thank you for responding. I'm looking at a tutorial online, and they suggest using a word clock connection, which my smaller interface doesn't have. I'm already using a Presonus Quantum 2626 with a Scarlett OctoPre to get mic 16 inputs, but wanted to use my SSL2+ as well. I'll give it a shot without the word clock.

@@Ultimatestudiosinc , that actually made sense! For while I've been trying to see how you avoided conflict with the MOTU's and the Rosetta and the "aggregate device" option is indeed an elegant solution. I am using 2 units of MOTU 828 es and mk3 daisy chained via adat, along with a Behringer AD 8000 ultragain pro-8 for an additional 8 i/o, also via adat for a total of 24 i/o. All these are connected to a Soundtracs Project 8 Topaz. Following your video, my print chain option is to take the Topaz's main L and R outs to a HA Successor comp, 2 units of Warm Audio EQP-WA then to an RME ADI-2, instead of a Rosetta. Will this work? I'm running everything to a 2019 iMac so Firewire is not an option.

I don't use an IO at all. My digital mixer is the IO. USB out to the computer and the mixer has mackie control, so the mixer controls the DAW Then I can use insert effect in the mixer before it even hits the DAW, plus then I have all the effects. Plugins etc in the DAW I can use too. So all the mixing is done at the board with out using any interface at all. That's a good video for mixing with an analog board thou. Then you do need an IO with lots of inputs. Now. WTH is a summing mixer?
