Graham, I would like to say a big thank you to you for such a great & helpful KZfaq channel you have. It was just over a year ago when I was diagnosed at 48 with incurable cancer and I needed to think of an alternative hobby and with your help you got me in to Model Railways, so thank you from the bottom of my heart, your an inspiration to me.

Hi Tim and thank you so much sir for those very kind words, they mean a huge amount to me and I’m only too pleased that you have a found an alternative hobby at this difficult time for you. Absolutely no need to thank me, in fact it should be me thanking you for supporting me and my channel. Take care my friend and cheers for now. ........Graham

Thanks Graham, another great video. One thing this video has done ( and as we say it's all down to personal choice) and that is DCC...NEVER!!! The raucous sound of those locomotives would drive me (and the neighbours) to distraction....I run my layout in a shed at night!! The only think I would indulge in should I ever build another layout is the wonderful ADM turntable. Cheers, Bob

trainmanbob Just the opposite for me Bob, I could never go over to DC but that is something that is as you say, is a personal thing, neither are right or wrong. As regards sound then I am upstairs in a detached barn with no neighbours around me that could hear it and as I live in my little environment, then I obviously choose things to suit. But the great thing is which so many people forget regarding sound and DCC is that there is a little switch on my iPad and as if by magic, if you turn that switch off then low and behold, you don’t get the sound coming out !! But I do have the choice - that’s the important thing. The ADM turntable is a gem. Cheers for now mate. .........Graham

It really is interesting to watch your vids Graham and seeing all the progress and processes you have gone thru while building Lakeside. This has turned out to be an amazing little layout with lots of play value, background action, and many little details to enjoy. Marvellous work in creating all the various scenic areas away from the busy main lines, by incorporating the TMD Container, Steam and Diesel Yards together. I'm looking forward to seeing the next chapters that you post and the development of your ideas and those that yet have to come to life.

John Crooks Hi John and thank you for the kind comment. This layout is such a joy to build which I think is down to the initial planning and knowing what I want from it rather than making it up as I go along which is basically what I did on the previous layout. I have many plans ahead of me which no one knows about yet and will hopefully be a nice surprise when I eventually announce them and start designing and working on them. 👍🏻. But what I have at the moment will do me just fine, nice and simple but does everything I want for that area, all I have to do is finish it off! 😂😂. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

Graham, you have really impressed me with your 'back-to-front scene'. A brilliant solution to making the filming of the layout more impressive, really gives an extra dimension. For those who might quibble that you lose the connection to the Manor, well this is a model railway. Decisions on scale are (and must be) left to the modeller; after-all not many villages have a giant TV monitor floating in the sky above them either, but it is a model! And a brilliant one at that. I like the thought that after a hard day's shunting around the yard, drivers can adjourn to the Red Lion, just a stone's throw away, nice touch. Re: my suggestion for a container lorry flyover to join with the square. Quite right Graham, keep it simple. I was just having a bit of fun thinking aloud. I was just imagining you rising to the challenge, and perhaps having a bit of a battle building it, and looking forward to what you would no doubt have done more elegantly than I could have imagined. But as you say your solution is simpler and more elegant all round. Love the turntable and steam yard too.

Chazzy B Many thanks for that great and informative comment mate, much appreciated. The front/back scene was something I had been thinking about while building this yard, as you may know, I am building this layout to include more camera shots to make the layout more interesting for the viewer when watching a video and this was one of those things which will help, I’m not keen on seeing edges of baseboards on the opposite side of the layout if it can be helped. I’m sure that the route for the container lorries will work out ok in the end, there may have to be a few cheats incorporated to make it work (kind of) but as you say, it’s a model and a small one at that. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

It is certainly looking better Graham and nice to know that you have got all the tracks working as you want them to. I just love that crosti 9F with the side chimney and the weathering makes it look so much more a workhorse. The whole container yard, TMD and steam areas blend in very well together and you have put in a lot of work to get it how you want it, so well done. I will be putting up another video either tomorrow evening or Tuesday and look forward again to our weekly chat, so cheers for now mate Geoff

TRAM JUNCTION Hi Geoff and thank you. Yes, it looks a little better than last week but not much as I have obviously been concentrating on the electrics and getting that right which doesn’t really show apart from the running. But with the electrics now sorted to how I want and the track now all pinned down, I can now carry on with the next phase which is for me, far more interesting. The Costi is a beautiful loco and runs impeccably on the layout - one of my better steamers. Getting that turntable installed and programmed was to me, one of the highlights, it’s a major part of that scene so I wanted to get that done. Speak tomorrow mate (my turn). Cheers for now. ...........Graham

Wow Graham, what a difference in a week. Simplicity is king, definitely. It does everything you want without any hassle and will give you hours of pleasure just moving locos back and forth across the 2 yards and onto and off the mainline. It is almost a layout in its self, everyone appears to be building small shunting layouts for exhibitions, you have your own integrated with your main layout. The hard standing idea is perfect and logistics are sound. Like how you managed to include 3 loco sheds too. Carry on the great work. Clive.

Clive briggs Many thanks Clive for that kind comment. This new area opens up so much more fun time for me while I can still have my main lines operating with trains running plus the vehicles moving on the high street too. And all done without a single switch to pull or press - just all operated manually while I’m sitting or from my iPad - nice and simple without too much to go wrong apart from operator error! 😂😂. I wasn’t going to include the single shed but it fitted perfectly in that position so I thought why not? And I’m glad I did, I think it finishes off that scene nicely. Cheers for now mate. .......... Hi Graham. When it works, it works! Loving all the action on the new addition. The turntable is fantastic. The “ photo “ background is something I have thought about a lot. So many modelers on You Tube have this horrible drop off at the edge of their layouts. And it takes away from the fantasy. This is an easy fix for that. Well done. See ya next time.

Norman Rowe Thank you Norman, I had been thinking what I could do to get some decent camera angles in that area apart from shooting towards the platforms and this seemed the most logical solution to me and I think it worked out great as I can place the camera in so many different areas - either using my traditional camcorder or my cube camera. Hopefully I can show that in the next up and coming videos. I’m really pleased that I have at long last put the turntable back on the layout plus all the engine shed etc, that was an area I really wanted back in so I can now carry on and develop that accordingly. Sean Baldwin Thank you very much Sean and much appreciated too. That ADM turntable is superb in so many ways but primarily the way it just works, so easy to set up and of course it keeps the polarity no matter the position which is obviously very important. It’s expensive in comparison to others but I think all the advantages it has straight out the box outweigh the expense. It’s surprised me how many folk didn’t mind the length of the video but I will try and keep them a little shorter in the future if I can. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

@GrahamFoulston

Terry Love Hi Terry and thank you. I will be able to run the trains in either direction once outside the yard as I have 5 pairs of crossovers on the 4 mainline tracks, i will try and show this in the next video but I have had these crossovers since day 1 of laying the mainline tracks so that I could get from the outer track to the inner track without physically lifting the train. Brilliant update Graham looking awesome them 3 way points are a nightmare I had one on my little tmd board and it kept shorting so gave up on it but I would like to know how did you manage to get it working right? Keep up the great work kind regards Gary Leicestertmd
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Leicester tmd Hi Gary, as you know, the three way point at the TMD was an absolute mare to fathom out how to do it without shorts while the other up by the engine shed was straightforward and worked first time. It really was a case of trial and error in the end, getting one side working, then the middle and then the other side rather than trying to make all three working at the same time. Initially I had too many power feeds coming in which really was the main problem so I disconnected the whole lot and did it one by one using isolated fish plates and normal fish plates - it took an age but got there in the end. Cheers for now mate. .......... Graham

Hi Graham good to see you again great video did you do away with all the foam board for the hard standing ? i must say i was about to go and get the the me some foam board but now i think grey board is the answer is that what you used ? .I must say graham that 9. f .looks so much better weathered up brilliant mate you are doing a splendid job whats next ballasting maybe or are you going to weather the track you have put down? just wondering. great stuff graham .thank you,look forward to the next one.cheers mate.Tony
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Tony Slight Hi Tony and thank you. Yes, the foam board was just a tad too thick and was level with the top of the rail head which would give me problems cleaning the track, so I have used a slightly thinner good quality art board with packing pieces underneath for support to stop it bending. I have sprayed the top surface of the card with grey car primer before fitting to enable me to airbrush or hand paint a concrete colour on the top surface at a later stage. I will be finishing off the steam engine shed area next with ballasting the track, spreading coal and ash around, installing lighting etc. Hope that helps mate and cheers for now. ..........Graham

@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Wheezy Palace N gauge Hi Chris and thank you, I don’t think I mentioned that in this video but I did cover it in the previous video (Part 2). I have used a curve point on the inner track just behind the steam engine shed as a feed into the yard, I can also access and exit the yard via platform nearest to the camera (as seen in this video with the GBRF Class 66). Probably not the ideal solution for the real train people but for me it works and works well. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

Nice update Graham like the way it's all coming together. 👍 . Are you considering a hattons class 66?
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Graham Mck Thanks Graham, don’t talk to me about the Hattons Class 66, I ordered the Freightliner sound version over a year ago now and they keep extending the delivery date, they are now saying sometime in January rather than the revised date of early January but with the Chinese New Year starting this Friday then if they are not shipped from China by then then I doubt if we will get them until the end of February. I have emailed Hattons yesterday about this and have so far not received a reply but we shall see. This I think will be the last time I shall pre-order anything from Hattons purely because of the lack of communications from them. They must know if they have been shipped or not so why don’t they just say, I think we have all been waiting patiently long enough now for these sound versions. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

Lou Smith Hi Lou and thank you, the turntable is made by ADM but it does have its own controller and so is not associated with the Z21 although I have heard that it is possible to make the turntable DCC enabled which would then allow it to be operated by the Z21 or any other controller I guess. I shall keep this as it is for the moment but I may look into making this DCC in the future. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

Dwight Kerley Hi Dwight, I shall keep them all manually operated because a) they are so close to me when operating the layout and b) I want to keep it as simple as I can - less things to go wrong that way. Hi Graham what’s the benefit of isolating the decoders in the TMD?
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Haymarket 47 It’s a thing I have about decoders having power to them for hours at a time, maybe no benefit but after feeling how warm some of my locos were getting just sitting there then I decided I didn’t want that this time on this layout. Not right and not wrong, just a personal preference that’s all. Cheers for now. ........... Graham

Graham Foulston Ah, that’s makes sense. I have noticed decoders being warm when driven but didn’t know that they got “hot” whilst stationary. Thanks
@GrahamFoulston
@GrahamFoulston 4 жыл бұрын
Haymarket 47 It’s not so much getting hot but just warm - that just doesn’t seem right to me so if I can stop that happening then I will - which is exactly what I have done using the method of isolating the tracks where the locos are standing doing nothing. 👍🏻
