In this video, I restore an old hewing hatchet, creating my ideal right handed carving hatchet.
I finally got around to restoring this old hewing hatchet that my friend, Brad, gave me as a gift recently. Brad found this hatchet on his property, and it's likely very old - maybe even as old as the property itself. The hatchet surprisingly had little rust, aside from in the eye, where an old rotten handle fit. I removed the handle, cleaned the head, re-hafted it with a new hickory handle, and added some much needed features and fine tuning, creating the perfect right handed carving hatchet to fit my needs. Thank you, Brad!
Enjoy the silent adventure!

these hatchet's are so unique you can flip the head and convert it from right hand to left hand (like me) chopping and trimming- great video!

Is this a commonality in these heads? Scored a right-handed hewing hatchet at a price I couldn't pass up, just knowing what a rare tool it is. Being a lefty, it would be great to just flip and re-hang it.

Hey cowboy! Good to see you back. Beautiful piece of work with the hatchet. There's something really satisfying about refinishing and old axe or hatchet. I refinished two double-bit axe's this past winter. I showed them to a local old-timer (I'm 70, so if I call him an old-timer, he's as old timer😀). He guessed them to be around 100 yrs old. Also, I don't know if you ever saw a comment I left on one of your past video's. You had recommended that I read "Grass Beyond The Mountains". I ordered it off Amazon, and couldn't put it down. What a fantastic read. Thanks for that. Take it easy. Be well. From Colorado, Roger.

Hey! Thank you! I loved refinishing this one, but I REALLY need a new rasp. It took me ages to get the head to fit! I think I saw the comment, but I can't remember correctly. I get lots of comments daily, so it's super hard to keep up with them all unfortunately. There was a time where I was able to keep up with replying to almost 10,000 comments, but there was just too much after one of my videos did well, and I had to give up on getting to them all 😢. I'm happy you enjoyed the book though! You'll be happy to know that there are two other books in the series that Richmond Hobson wrote. The second is, "Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy", and the third is, "Rancher Takes a Wife". I'm currently in the middle of "Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy" myself 🤠. I talked to an old time trapper from up here who actually worked on Pan and Rich's ranch first hand. It is about as amazing as the book itself hearing the stories he has. Lester Dorsey, Andy Christensen, Pan, Rich - he knew all of them. You be well too! Thanks for the comment, Roger!

@@wituikbws I will look fpor those books. Thanks! As for a hasp---the best I have found is a farrier's hasp. When I still had horses, on occasion my horse-shoer would give me a worn out hasp. I tried using one on the first axe handle I did, and it worked great. Maybe you can find one. Later!!

Good job overall but you should not bevel the back side of a hewing hatchet or adz. They work more like a very large chisel or gouge.
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I has figured as much but unfortunately there was already a bevel there to follow. I just ended up cleaning it up to match how it was originally

That handle wasn't actually originally on it. I just jammed it on there a few months ago when I was moving across the Province. I liked the look of it so much that I got that new one to replace it though! I know it's not original, but it's close enough for me :)
