Since we've been living in our Skoolie for 2months now, we thought we'd do a review of how our bus has been working for us! We briefly cover each area of the bus and give you the scoop on what's great, what's not-so-great, and which items the verdict is still out. We probably didn't think of everything you might be wondering about, so we also ask for you to leave your questions in the comments, and we will try to cover them in next week's live stream!

About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
Mike & Kerry

Oh, two pusher fans in front of the radiator should help the hills, but an extra engine OIL COOLER, with a fan, really keeps the engine cooler!

Kerrie, Instead of going nuts about having to climb over Mike at night why don’t y’all just swap sides where y’all sleep...i.e., make Mike sleep where YOU do now. Easy peasey! Glad y’all are having all this success with the bus and the build! WooHoo! Stay safe.

I LOOOOOVE your skoolie! I thought the over-the-sink dish rack/storage was my own idea, but then I saw it here and in another bus! As far as the toilet, one thing you could try is using “family cloth” instead of toilet paper. Cut terry cloth into 4”x4” squares and use that dry for #1, and dampen it for #2. Keep the used cloths in a disinfectant solution in a bucket or diaper pail. Since you have a washing machine, it will be convenient to prewash the cloths alone, then add the rest of your clothes for a full wash. I have even washed mine in a WonderWash, and got them spotless! I keep mine in a hyperchlorous solution I make with salt water in a bottle I plug into a USB port. Smells like mild chlorine and cleans EVERYTHING! Again, I love your build, and will be building mine soon!

I love your bus. When you built the bed into your bus, I thought you'd get sick of the climbing over one another quick. If you could turn the bed length ways would make a world of difference. When the time comes to replace your roof deck. Save up to put on composite decking and put on a sealer coat to keep it from staining. As for the composting toilet. If you had a black tank, you'd have to be empting it nearly as often and it is a lot harder. Run your bus up to Overgaard Az. to Bear Country Ranch and say hi. You might want to wait until it gets a little warmer tho. Your engine overheating might need a good radiator back flushing and thermostat. Good luck u2.

TP in the compost is taking up a lot of space and when it clumps it drags on the arm. You need a separate little trash for that.

@7:50 Um ya, I've heard them called "No Colds" instead of Norcold. I guess for a reason? Thankfully, luckily and through no choice of ours, we had a Dometic in our entry level Class A that we owned for something like 10 years. Worked like a charm. Mind you, I always made sure the RV was 100% level when it was running. Manufacturers weren't putting residential fridges in RVs yet at that point. But these days with batteries the way they are, and the efficiency of modern fridges, a residential fridge can definitely work.

Guys, bravo! Seriously your my heroes. Im a long time stalker and bus builder myself. Ive been about 3 months behind you throughout my whole build. Ive incorporated and learned from many of your design aspects along the way. Your videos and walkthroughs have been my crash course in so many things. We are on our maiden journey now and its so nice to tune into you guys and see you working out the kinks like we are. Today it was a catastrophic charge controller failure. Or so i thought. Just a loose connection and we are back on track, thank god! We are headed to florida for the winter but i hope our paths cross soon. I feel like i know you guys so well, mike the hair looks great bud! I agree that hitting the full send button and driving your house down the road takes serious cajones. Thank you so much for all you guys have contributed to the community, your attitudes and ethic helped me achieve my dream, i am so very much looking forward to linking up someday. Much love and respect my fellow travelers.

Interesting point about having to empty the loo after two weeks. I know a couple living on a narrowboat in the UK. They removed the stirrer from their Nature's Head, adding cover after each use instead. They went from needing to empty every two weeks to lasting almost a month! Incidentally, we found your channel when searching for comparison reviews on compost loos! Big thank you for that! :)

Your shower faucet has a "scald guard" valve. Two handle faucets can not have that. It's basically a balancing valve so you don't get burned. Turn the cold water to the shower faucet off completely.

I’m late catching up on your videos, but thought I’d chime in on the overheating. My first diesel pusher was 38 footer running a Cat (if memory serves it was 320 or 340 hp) on a freightliner chassis, with a rear radiator. Ran like a champ until it went up grades, and would start to overheat. The solution ended up being an annual cleaning of the fins of the radiator. We used simple green and low pressure water hose. Several soaks of simple green, let it sit for 10 minutes then flush. Repeat until the flush looks clear. Once we did this, our overheating issues stopped. Those rear facing radiators suck up road grime and dirt like crazy. Also!!! Don’t ignore overheating. I’ve asked many mechanics what they view as the most common problem with regards to breakdowns, and a lot of them say overheating. (((((((((((HOPE YOU SEE THIS)))))))))) and hope it helps you!

Hi guy's.... would you mind explaining the 45 degree cut on the vent pipe of your black water tank please? Well and what it does now, what it didn't do before you changed it With the washing machine.... I am pretty sure you know about those tiny washer / spin combinations for around 120 bucks on amazon which according to some guys here on KZfaq does not take a lot of water at all. maybe that would be an alternative down the road in case you don't like or need the big one. That said... you could shorten the whole personal storage cabinets in the bedroom and maybe free up some space for a king mattress or at least to turn the existing mattress so the head would be toward the back window. With your fridge... are the measurements of 110 volt fridges much different then the RV sized ones? would you be able to just change them out without tearing everything down and rebuild around it ?

You guys should try using Coco Coir instead of Peat Moss. It comes in compressed in little bricks and you just hydrate it a little before putting it in the toilet. It would take up alot less space in your storage bins that a whole bale of peat. The Coco Coir should be available at any store that has a decent garden section. At least thats the case up here in Washington State. If not, you could always amazon it. So happy for you guys too! So glad everything has been working out so well and you are having such a blast! :)

On your hot water shower situation. The shower valve should have an adjustment inside the handle to allow it to flow only hot water. From the factory they are usually set up so it still mixes in cold water as a safety measure. We have the same set up with no issues getting hot water full time out of the shower.

I really like your bus and how you built it. I have been planning in my head how to do one. My wife also has insomnia and sits up reading a lot and it wakes me up. So if I were to build a bus it would have twin beds in the back lengthwise with curtains and usb ports and lights on each side. I also would want the rear door to open onto a rear deck that would double as a transport platform for my polaris RZR. That way I could still tow my cherokee.

Did the manufacture have any suggestion about the water heater? I've thought about a suggestion I made about your deck and think I've come up with a way to do it. " Get a small kettle shaped grill with removable legs. Get a LP burner to fit in the kettle. you can light that burner and you have a fire pit to sit by and roast hot dogs or marshmallows for smores. Or you can just sit and watch the fire. When not in use, take off the legs and store it in that bin right there on the deck.

It’s hard to believe you’ve been on the bus for two months now. Thanks for letting us know how things are going with living on the bus.

If you are looking for a different refrigerator, we have a Unique 24vdc fridge in our house that works GREAT!. We are definitely using the same fridge in our bus build.

You might consider adding a transmission cooler to the cooling system to keep bus from over-heating!

Really good and helpful video....My girlfriend and I bought a bus and plan to start the buildout in the spring...Until then we are making decisions on what to buy and where to put it...Glad to know the RV fridge is an issue...thanks for sharing!

Thank you soooo much for the insights. Know they will help me personally, sure they will help many others too. Saving to my ‘build’ file that I refer back to often. 🙏❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. I’m planning a draw bridge deck at the back of my shuttle. For my decking I’m thinking the wire grate material with a cheap rug over it for foot comfort. It will be strong, lighter, and the rug can be rolled up, and cheap to replace later. We’ll see how that works out, definitely way down the build road. 😁

Not to stir the pot(totally stirring the pot) but is there a compelling reason Mike doesn't sleep on the far side of the bed?😁 You guys are great! Loved the curtain episode, nice to see real people failing until they succeeded just like real life, just like my wife and I do so often!

I think tin should be put on the wall where the woodstock pipe is rising up. Don't you think?

Might want to make screen caps for the vents to keep pests from taking up residence or blocking it...

Remove the handle of your shower faucet. You should notice a red plastic adjustment lever or “scalding adjustment”. You should be able to adjust it to full flow from there. We did the same thing with our and it fixed the problem. The installation manual should go into more depth on the subject as well. Nice build!

I've heard a couple people say a separate trash for toilet paper helps the compostable toilet issue a lot so you might want to give it a try just to see if you have room for a small trash bin
