I'm in the market now for a 955 generation Porsche Cayenne, but everytime I find one I like I can't help thinking that I could get a nice L322 for the same money. Help me decide which I should go for... #itsjoel #rangerover #cayenne

I myself cannot wait till I own an L322 and completely understand the pull towards them. However as you’ve owned 2 previously unless you can afford a 5.0 supercharged L322 I would think that the content would be a bit, been there done that. Even still if I was you I would get the Range Rover 5.0 or not but thinking content wise maybe a non 5.0 sc l322 would do a bit worse

My thoughts are that SUV's are very boring. You loved the TT, so why not just get a Quattro version of that car? More powerful, better handling, and very good for winter driving.

After owning both a 4.2SC L322 and a Cayenne S, I’m still on the fence. I’ll be in the market for a Cayenne Turbo S or a 4.2/5.0SC L322 in a few months time. The L322 felt far more special and the supercharged lump was absolutely faultless. What wasn’t faultless was the rest of the car. As you know, the maintenance is fairly relentless unless it’s had an absolute fortune thrown at it prior to ownership. It was a charming thing though. The cayenne felt a bit cold, in comparison and certainly doesn’t win on either the exterior or interior appearance front. With that said, it was just as comfortable, dynamically superior and didn’t give you the dreaded anticipation of something going wrong with every journey, like most L322’s do. Even if my Cayenne eventually decided to jettison it’s clutch (don’t get a manual). My heart says L322, my head says Cayenne. I’ll see how your situation plays out to help me make an informed decision!

Do you want my L322? 2003, Epsom Green with cream interior. 3.0 TD6 so it actually gets double figures MPG. Obviously the downside is it's not ULEZ as a diesel. Good points include a new gearbox, sill and arch welding done, new genuine air suspension compressor and steering u-joint. I've spent a big pile of cash on it in the last two years. Bad points are some tatty bits inside (it's been well loved but well used), no A/C, a slow drain on the battery and a squeaky turbo if it's left sitting for too long. I want shot of it to someone who won't just break it for parts. Oh, and it would be dirt cheap. We're talking enough left over from your budget to buy a Cayenne as well if you wanted.

You bought the wrong one. I wouldn’t bother with the 955. Or the 4.5. Drive the 4.8 turbo or turbo s. It’s literally worlds apart in the way it goes down the road and doesn’t have the problems of the early 955. The 957 was large and a proper SUV. They got smaller from the 958 onwards. If you buy the turbo with PDCC you’ll be amazed. It’s so far from a Touareg or an Audi……but yes…. The under clothes are similar with the Porsche secret sauce poured in generously. The proof is in the pudding. Go drive one!

I have pondered over the same two cars myself, the Porsche has always been a bit of a secret crush of mine. I also love the fact that you look for similar characteristics in cars as I do, such as high spec models that haven’t been ruined by adding aftermarket options, staying a true to spec as possible. I currently own a P38 4.6 Vogue, so for some time now I have been thinking about adding a 5.0 supercharged L322 to the driveway. I have always been outspoken about the “lesser models” of Range Rovers, however after having taken a trip away twice recently and hired an L320 RR Sport Autobiography Sport 3.6 TDV8, I’ve fallen in love and now I’m in the process of buying one 😅🤦🏻‍♂️

If you like something sharp to drive, buy the Porsche, if you want a bit more plushness, buy the Rangie. Also, as a Cayenne 955 manual owner, the reason why a lot of the head units get changed is because the PCM2 head unit is garbage, and they go bad for various reasons including causing a battery drain. And a replacement is a lot. I have a Erisin unit with CarPlay. Looks factory and works better than the original.

Theres a great video by a US Porsche specialist that talk thorough what model v8 cayenne to buy. Some significant upgrades they made with the V8 engines that id definitely recommend considering. I still bought a diesel 7p VW touareg to tow with but the cayenne video helped a lot. I considered one for a long time. Price in Australia dictated most.

I daily drive a Cayenne Turbo S, 955 and it is amazing. Spent loads on pre-emptive dealing with common issues at a specialist when I bought it but for the last year it hasn't needed a thing. I have owned a couple of Range Rovers and the Cayenne is so much more refined, air suspension great, really quiet, pulls like an absolute train and is super reliable. 17 years old so a few niggles for sure but at just over 80k miles it's hardly run in. Life is for living, mpg is for wimps! Get a Cayenne but buy a decent one.

Have you considered that an 8 speed gearbox doesnt neccessarily mean better mpg than the 7 speed? They dont just add an extra (higher) gear, theres a good chance the gear ratio for 7th in the old box is similar to 8th in the new box. The benefit is closer gear ratios and a smoother drive

Fundamentally the decision for either car has a great deal to do with content for your channel as well as a daily for you personally. You have been there and done that with range rovers and it’s generally going to become a repeat series on your channel. The TT and Volvo have been interesting to watch because they were new for your channel. So a Porsche is going to be fresh and and will be seen as a progression whilst you move your channel forward. Look at Paul Wallace channel, great guy but he just does the same thing with the same cars and his channel views have plummeted. Look at Sams on the other hand and he is doing wonderful content because he is constantly striving for new content. Up to you Joel but it’s your business and think of it in those terms as look after the business and it will deep you the rewards. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼

i agree totally but LPG is beinf phased out because the UK is totally idiotic i run my range rover on it and it is almost on par price wise to running on petrol. it infuriates me that the eco fraction of the UK do not fight for LPG to stay ot the pumps as it burns cleaner however they are now pricing it like petrol so makes no sense financially it does though keep your oil clean.

I have an L322 4.2 sc on lpg. I have ran all my cars inc the wives cars on lpg for the last 15 years. Plenty of audi S cars owned on lpg too. Probably 300K miles in total with no LPG related issues. I spend plenty on maintenance, fit top notch parts and tyres etc. Spending money on fuel is just a waist. Its literally money down the drain. What turns me off is cheap china tyres on a nice car. Just looks like they spend the minimum needed to keep the wheels turning. Save money on fuel and spend it on good parts and tyres I say.

Dont let your heart rule your head... Ideally Form and Function are equally balanced in the car world but having owned both Porsches and Range Rover products there is no contest when it comes to reliability. I have owned 4 Range Rover products from new and had to reject two of them for ongoing reliability issues. Only had 2 Porsches as they are so bloody expensive to buy and maintain - took them both round Europe and not a hint of any problems. Also moved them on quickly as they hold their value strongly - got the same money I paid for the Macan as Porsche could not make and supply them quickly enough at the time. Landrover products always look so nice and I wish they would put as much effort as they do in design into engineering. The sad fact is they dont and no surprise they continually get a kicking in the reliability surveys.

L322 would be my choice, but then I’ve always thought that sports styled MPVs look ridiculous. I’m going to defend (factory fitted) privacy glass though. I know it’s subjective, but when you look around at your rear seat passengers sitting in shaded air conditioned luxury on a blisteringly hot day, you find yourself wishing it was legal to have it all around! Of course, you do come to your senses when reversing the damn thing at night. It then becomes very apparent why the law is as it is.

L322 looks like great value, but get an insurance quote before pulling the trigger. There are really scary things going on with Range Rover insurance, some companies won't insure you even if your record is perfect, other companies are charging over £10k to insure the car. It seems to be a specific Range Rover thing, they are great cars if your insurance company will cover you.

I have a friend who has had both, a 2011 V8 Vogue and a 2016 Porsche Cayenne Diesel. He loved the Range Rover but it did spend some time in the Garage. The Porsche on the other hand he described as the most reliable car he had ever had. I haven't driven either but have been a passenger many times and the Range Rover was marginally more comfortable and opulent. He does love Range Rovers though and has bought as new one because of ULEZ. I did drive an earlier Range Rover of his which was a V8 supercharged Overfinch which was a blast. Being rational the Porsche is a more sensible option, it is almost certainly better built, the whole philosophy of the German Luxury brands is different to British ones, and dare I say it German workers have a different mindset too. For someone and no disrespect is intended, who is perhaps a bit mechanically challenged you will probably spend less with the Porsche. The Cayenne is probably for sale now, White with a tan interior but probably outside your price range and not ULEZ but fastidiously maintained and cleaned

Reading some of the comments it seems if it’s your heart it’s a RR if you use your head, it’s a Cayenne 😅 the RR could be a better channel car… and more popular with UK audiences.
