Used - you can get FSD and Acceleration Boost for almost nothing on a vehicle with low mileage. Prices are very good right now (mid 2023)

I find used cars on the Tesla website are priced substantially less than what private party individuals and even other car dealers are trying to get for the cars. I think the public has not cut up with the reality that secondhand Teslas have dropped substantially in price and value. A few years ago we had a car shortage, but now there is a car glut.

(Other than checking the battery cover from underneath, as u recommended.) QUESTION #2: If buying 2020 or newer, is the battery condition a concern?

List price for Teslas here in Vegas were about $10k more than Tesla's website for comparable used Model 3. I was also able to do a trade in with Tesla. So it was much better pricing than the dealership. I didn't look at private party.

I literally just reserved a 2022 M3LR Blue with white/black interior, 14k miles with Enhanced Auto Pilot and Accelerator Boost ($57k retail new) for $42,500. When the prices begin dropping they do so at a rate of 500 per day. Have a strategy and follow through. You then cannot blame anyone but yourself. I paid $500 for the deposit and i was close enough. The shipping fee was $500. All in all, a win i would consider. Plus the added 1 year to basic warranty is the same as buying 2023 for coverage sake. At 3.7 seconds 0-60, your LR is now a Performance comparable vehicle and actually is faster above 60 in a roll race with 358 miles of range. You can have a million dollars and be a millionaire but if you spend a million, youre as broke as the next guy.

What makes me hesitant is the fact that the website want you to make a deposit and place the order before they even run your credit. Their website, pre-order placed, has me locked in at 9.79% interest. Am I right and assuming that this will go up?

Yes. You can put your vin number and can get a estimated trade in value. You can do this through Tesla website.

The only pro buying from Tesla is that you get that one year 10,000 mile warranty. Other than that , the cons are you’re buying a car unseen and if you cancel the delivery because it’s not what you expected it to be you lose your deposit.

That is true - you do lose that $250 if you cancel. I'd say there's a little comfort knowing all used Teslas put back on the market by Tesla should be in good shape, and if there's something wrong, they can fix it under warranty. But yeah, buying unseen is still a risk for sure

@@GoLongAmerica interesting. I haven’t heard of the $500 but are you referring to the delivery fee? That’s the minimum Tesla will charge for delivery even if it’s nearby. But the $250 non refundable goes towards the purchase.

@@tesbros That’s interesting. I guess Tesla fees are different depending on where one lives. Every Tesla order where I live has a $500 non-refundable deposit. I can pick up the vehicle for free, but if it needs to be transferred, the fee is $500-2000.

Once you have a VIN and the car at your delivery center, it’ll ask you if you have a trade in on the Tesla app. Most things are done through the app btw. During that process, put your vin and info with photos and they’ll come back in a few days with a offer. You can accept and if you do, you can bring that in for a trade in to save some costs on taxes. Hope that helps and let us know if you have any other questions!

After the 4 yr warranty. From Tesla: Tesla used vehicles are covered by the remainder of 4 years or 50,000 miles left on the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty. After expiration, the Used Vehicle Limited Warranty provides additional coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles. If the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty has already expired, the Used Vehicle Limited Warranty will provide coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles, starting from your delivery date.

My only concert is lack of pics and they say car may contain cosmetic imperfections and when you click on details they say 4in scratches and 2in dents are acceptable... Those are huge in my opinion... I want to believe they would deal with imperfections but they cant guarantee. I called and they said I back from purchase once car arrives but by that time your deposit and transportation fee are non-refundable.

The only thing I'm worried about is imperfections with the interior or paint things like that, not being able to see until delivery sucks

It does and for minor things, they won't cover it unfortunately. But you can always back out if it's not the quality you want.

Yes, you can check it out inside and outside, but not a test drive typically. (However, you can schedule test drives w the different models at a Tesla service center if you are interested in that.) Also if you decline the Tesla, your deposit is nonrefundable

Is it possible to hire someone as a consultant to help me determine what model S I should get? I was initially in the market for a 2016 model S but as I have learned more and more about the functionality and the potential upgrades I’m wondering if I should get a newer model up to a 2020 because I do not like the 2021 refresh. But even so I do wonder if there are any drawbacks to being closed off to newer models and it’s so hard to navigate the information online

Hope this helps... Here's my story... Currently running a '22 MYP 33k miles bought new (no problems), Used model S 2013, 115k miles. Saturday - Extremely heavy rain, driving about 10 minutes to evening church meeting. After meeting, few error codes popped up on my screen even though car was driveable to supermarket prior to going home. Once parked, car would not re-engage and next day car screen would not even turn on. Had it towed to Electrified Garage in Ocala, FL. They did assessment and concluded water had gotten into the drive unit from a poor seal. So basically a 9k fix to get a used 2020 REMAN P85 unit and replaced. Looks like it is a problem in the Model S earlier models. Kind of upsetting that they haven't at least warned people about the seal and stuff. Here is a really good article explaining basically the exact same thing that happened to my 2013 Model S P85 145k miles. insideevs.com/news/534878/tesla-models-motor-fail-rain/ Conclusion from article..."So the moral of the story is that if you happen to own a Tesla (specifically an earlier Model S) then get it inspected prior to the end of your warranty coverage and make sure that the speed sensor and its associated hardware/seals are in good condition so that water intrusion into the motor and potential motor failure can hopefully be avoided." Another side story, I also had a 2013 Rav4 EV which basically had the exact same motor and drivetrain had a similar issue. The coolant leaked from the seal into the motor and caused my RAV4 to not operate. Almost very similar type problem. 9k problem. Are you guaranteed the financing from Tesla if you pay the initial delivery fees etc? On my end it says I have to make the delivery fee payment first.

Typically, financing arrangements are separate from any initial fees or payments required for delivery. It's always best to directly confirm the details of the financing terms with Tesla or whichever financing institution you're working with.

Would you recommend me buying a used 2021 model y long range with acceleration boost, 20inch rims and tow hitch. Its selling price is 30,933. But it has 60,700 miles . I’m stuck and don’t know what to do. Anything helps thanks 😊

I’d say that’s pretty good. But I would put the vin on carfax and check it out there. Then put all the info on Kelley blue book and check what prices are going for there. You’ll have an extra year of warranty if you buy from Tesla so that’s a plus, since this basic warranty has expired. Keep in mind that 20 inch rims will decrease your range a bit compared to 18in but that’s still a personal preference

Yes, you get the normal 4 year or 50k warranty + 8 years battery and drive train with the car. So it depends on how old the car is as to what you get

No. Buying from Tesla will have a better chance of having those features though since they can add them easily, whereas buying from a private seller or dealership wouldn't have that option

The car I’m buying is way less than KBB value. It’s a 2019 M3 SR+ with 23k miles for $37k. Supposed to be picking it up in a couple days but I’m a bit worried since it’s so much cheaper than KBB which was around $46k. Should I be concerned?

I personally wouldn’t be. It fluctuates and KBB is just a baseline. Tesla cars tend to fluctuate quite a bit. I’ve seen it go low but it usually goes back up. Demand isn’t an issue right now so I wouldn’t worry about not being able to sell it. However, if you’re trying to buy now and sell it, I’d be careful since the market has cooled significantly.

Not free to consumers. That just means they can add whatever they want before they resell and sometimes you can get a good deal

It qualifies if the price is under $25K and the car is at least 2 years old. For example, now in 2024, the car should be 22'.

@@aphotic_flame Yes, Tesla just started to offer the $4K deducted on the purchase price. My state offers $4K if income is low enough so that's $8K off the Tesla price. Close to $17K before sales tax and DMV reg fees. I will self insure collision, just junk it if in accident. Probably receive back > $10K for the crashed vehicle..

They avoid talking on the phone like the plague. I’ve asked them to call and I get a text message lol. I tried calling and when I press the prompts to speak to someone regarding used vehicles, I get someone that says they can only help with new inventory and they try to to push me for a new. So I’m back to texting again. The responses via text are short and nothing that gives me the warm fuzzies of purchasing car unseen. Perhaps I’m so used to other places like Apple where they have great service in their text responses. Prior to searching KZfaq, it was a shock to me that their used vehicles have no photos or videos, and it seems a hit or miss on test driving the used. I saw another video that says they didn’t allow him to test drive or even open the door to look inside. Like what??? It sucks that we have to pay the $500 delivery fee and $500 order fee in order to have a chance to look at it. I get a message after a week of paying the $1k that my order will be cancelled if I don’t input financing details. But the thing is I was already approved through Tesla new if they saw my account. Which the new is obviously a higher loan so it made no sense to have to apply again for a lower amount. No follow ups on when the car will be ready or if it shipped. No status on anything. It’s wild such a large company lacks any communication when purchasing thousands of dollars 🥴

I'm sorry to hear that. Thanks for sharing your experience. If it's any help, they do have to pass certain standards written here: www.tesla.com/support/ordering-used-tesla#vehicle-condition so even if you can't see it or test drive it before putting that money down, it should be 'within spec.' I haven't bought used from Tesla yet - only via third party and dealerships. I know it's a bit more time consuming and generally less convenient, but if you're having problems with Tesla and it's causing this much stress, I would consider looking at private party or dealerships instead. You just have a lot more leeway with test driving and inspection before putting any money down. I like using onlyusedtesla.com/ and www.findmyelectric.com/. Yes, so after you pay the deposit and your vehicle order is officially placed, you'll login to your Tesla account to manage your purchase. In your Tesla account, select “Loan” as your payment method -> Third-Party Financing (this is where you’ll indicate you’re using your own bank). Then, you'll provide your bank info to Tesla. You can always contact a Tesla advisor if you need additional help.

When buying from Tesla, they give you an extra 1 year. So, they are covered by the remainder (if there is any) of the original 4-year/50,000-mile Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty, plus an additional 1-year/10,000-mile Used Vehicle Limited Warranty after the original warranty expires. Hope this explains it better!
