I put my 2020 Subaru WRX STI with a tasteful amount of bolt-on mods, back to stock... Reason being is I got state reffed ONCE AGAIN in the STI and we now have to go stock and get the car inspected... If you guys aren't from California, a state referee ticket is when you have to put your car back to stock OEM parts and get the car inspected by the state. During that process, you cannot drive the car until it is 'cleared' or passed inspection. In todays video I prepare my STI for inspection by removing my grimmspeed downpipe, single exit catback exhaust, tune, and more.

I am close to turning 72 years old and I have lived in California since 1956. During all that time I have seen California go from being a good state to live in to being a terrible state to live in. I did not know that California was so strict on cracking down on modified cars. This is just another example of the messed up priorities of the state of California.

I know it would be expensive, but since COBB did project green speed all their parts are now carb legal. You could just sell your Grimmspeed parts and replace them with the COBB parts. Next time you get pulled over all your parts will be carb legal and have numbers to prove it.

Their Downpipes are Greenspeed compliant but not CARB approved. Pretty much everything else COBB has a CARB number.

I got pulled over 7 times in one week in Cali. It was annoying every time you see a cop. Because your chances are high being pulled over. I made the right choice to move out of there. You can't have nice things in Cali.

I think the main reason why Chris got state reffed and keeps getting pulled over is because of the tint. Like the windshield tint is the biggest factor for getting pulled over.

I get not running carb parts is a nono but the last time he’s gotten pulled over was initially cause of his windshield tint which lead to them asking about other stuff. All I’m saying is maybe forgo the windshield tint it’s just one more thing for them to pull him over for

In NC, I can do anything to the motor, intake or exhaust. The law only says you have to have a muffler and cats. None of that ref crap you have to put up with. I had to deal with CHP when I drove out there. I had lights on my mirrors that were legal. We had amder in the front and red on the backside. They was put on to help keep my mirrors from getting knocked off at a dark loading dock at one of the cold storage. Because he didn't like them, he told me I had to take them off. I asked several times what was illegal about them, and he would never tell me. The told me to get them off or I would be placed Out of Service. I could never live in that state. I can't understand how people keep voting in all the people that keep passing those anti-american laws.

There are ways to get around it without actually getting the car inspected if you know the right people but it's still ridiculous. Or you can go to an "engineer" and pay them 10k to make all of your illegal mods legal (they don't actually change anything). If you find someone to register your cars under in AZ you can bypass the state ref completely. My homie did it and the state red went away

Id say invest in property in Texas, Id say El Paso or Dallas/Fort Worth. It could be a real cheap beat up house, register all your cars in Texas and bring it back in California, if you ever get pulled over you can just say you’re visiting, you don’t have to tell them how long. Only down side is that registration is once a year and you have to get your car inspected so you’d have to bring you car to texas once a year UNLESS you have a buddy or someone you’re close with that inspects cars and “cough cough” could inspect it with you being in California still which would save you a trip to Texas.

I was state reffed too. My bail ticket was $400 but they’d be able to see i paid it off instead of reffing it. Went back to stock and passed inspection. Now back to fbo with a valved exhaust

Before you sell the hoses with that other Catch can make sure the hoses you left on the car are the same standard. The EO says: All Hoses are SAE30R9 or stock equivalent. The Ref will be looking for the SAE30R9 designation on the hoses. Usually printed on the Hose. Compare the old ones to the ones from COBB and make sure they say the same thing.

It’s a lot worse in the southern parts of CA than everywhere else. Especially if you have an obviously modded car. The louder and flashier it is the more the cops will be checking for you because they have nothing better to do 💀 it sucks but most of the time it’s better to just comply than to be getting constantly slapped with $400+ tickets. For Chris it’s most likely the fact that he has a YT channel and is driving around with super dark front windshield tint with a bright wrap. If his car looked stock on the outside he probably would have little to no problems

All you need performance wise for a daily STI in just an exhaust. Keep your wheels and everything else suspension. You’ll be good.. and just get 50% tint.. less noticeable. Enjoy the STI. It’s still amazing stock.(with an exhaust)

If you live in California, you know how this works. One cannot fully commit to modding. It has to be done with respect to what's obviously noticeable under the hood or below. Anything in between, well, that depends on how not so obvious it is.

Yeah I was gonna say unfortunately people make it look really obvious you mod your car… Exhaust you need resonated, lowering your car I would go as far as adjust your camber as much as he did. Don’t put stickers on your car that show your mods. Just keep it nice but also close to stock looking as possible. I live in central california and have never had issues like this and have owned a 5.0 mustang civic si hatch and currently a wrx 2022 all with cold air intakes and other mods

do not be afraid to ask the ref some questions when you get inspected. Take that downpipe with the cat and see if you can get a CARB approved high flow cat and have it installed. usually anything behind the cat is personal taste as long as it does not exceed the decibel laws.

You could possibly ask for a court date to see the judge to get reimbursed for the ticket because what is the point of paying them and still having to go back to stock? You have to tell the judge it cost you a lot of money to go back to stock

You gotta find someone in a different state(Oregon) and register the car there, in a county outside the city so you don’t have to go through emissions testing, and boom you can go get your tags for you car and drive with all your modifications!!

Im running the redline intake, Cobb turbo inlet, Cobb bpv, Cobb aos, and a Fujitsubo single exit that maxes out at 90 db @4500rpm no issues with the popo.

@@chris_borges it’s not gonna be as loud as the gs intake you had, but you can hear it, the temps stay pretty good if your moving and it looks dope. If you keep the block off plate on it you don’t have to worry about deep puddles, and the temps stay much cooler at the expense of the whoose sound.

In the 90s and early 2000s I had this same problem with CVPD. I would get pulled over weekly. They would give me the same tickets over and over. It was harassment. I eventually stopped using my car. The only way to avoid all of this was to eventually move away. After moving out if CV I never get pulled over by police.

Well a window banner is a dumb thing to put on in my opinion especially in CA. It’s pretty much the same thing as having tint on the windshield. You put a big target on you. That wing ain’t doing any favors for u too😂

@@inshallah4280 as long as the banner doesn’t go below that factory tint line that most cars have, I believe it’s 4 in it’s fine. The problem is most banner come 6+in wide.

That’s why it’s difficult for me to find a perfect place to call yet, because every state has rules that’ll kill your vibe if it’s just not for you. Cali was a dream once upon a time now it’s like going to that relatives you know you can’t get too comfortable because of so many unnecessary rules.

all states have requirements on cars such as in michigan they have a height on cars low or high they also say all parts of the car has to be DOT approved meaning they have to be stock and they can impound the vehicle and it would have to be turned completely back to stock before it leaves the impound lot and I learned that from experience and it is expensive to redo everything

Can you register it in anther state to get around that? If not and cars mean that much to you maybe move right outside cali so you aren’t going far from where you are currently.

I would go in to file a complaint since its the same guy... honestly i get hes doing his job and was "nice" but i wish he was better trained to make it clear what the process is. If you sell those parts you can pick up that nexgen stage 2 kit. Carb legal- intake, Inlet, injectors, rails, lines, pressure regulator, fuel pump, catback that’s around 92-94 db. It’s pricey but legit, add a Cobb Bpv and new top mount with a good tune it will net you 330whp on 91.

Im in OC and got a ticket as well for my exhaust but didnt have the State ref sticker on it. My ticket that got mailed home says "pay without certificate" paid the ticket online no issue. I have been asking around a I guess if you have the sticker like your ticket you must get the certification to fix but if there is no "State ref" sticker on it you can just pay it off and no issue.

It is that easy to do. If you want something enough you can do it... I did... I dipped. Slept in my car and now I own more than I ever have!!!! Not only is Cali hard for cars. It's stupid expensive. With the Cali mindset living in a cheaper state you'll be rocking designer clothes and the best mods you can get.... sometimes opportunity comes with a risk!

Truck enthusiasts here it don’t matter if you are a car or truck enthusiast we are all part of a community. I just added a straight pipe and cut the cats on my cammed 5.3 it’s pushing about 380 hp right now but I’ve driven by many cops I’m my area in California and no pull over in my town a lot of modded trucks and maybe that’s why they don’t care in my area maybe it just depends on the area in California man I heard that LA area is the worst spot for car enthusiasts in California

Happened to me. I bought my Evo 9 while stationed in Washington and moved back home to Cali. Went through inspection and they laughed at me. Long story short, I went from 450hp back to stock. I even had to remove my JDM rear bumper and install the ugly Usd. I sold it while it was stock and took my 18k to the bank. F it

Sucks bro! But if you do not put the parts back on the car don’t sell them keep them. I’m sure later down the road you will get tempted to throw them back on. I’ve parted out my evo 2 times bc I got reffed both times. And here I am again buying everything all over again to get retune for the 3rd time but this time I’m keeping everything lol shits becoming harder and harder to ship into Cali bc of all the restrictions 🥴
