In this video we take a look at a brand new product from Ubiquiti - The UniFi Dream Machine Pro Max. This is essentially an upgraded version of the regular UDM Pro but with more memory, a more powerful CPU for better IDS/IPS throughput, 2.5GbE WAN port and the ability to install redundant hard drives for UniFi protect.

Many people do not use the built-in switch because it only has a gigabit link to the 10g ports I have only seen two set ups where they do use the built-in switch in reality. It is not used that much spending the money to put 2.5 and would only be worth it for the smallest market of the product

Companies who will use this already will have "dedicated" switches, honestly WAY overkill for a small business or home environment. Look at who your audience is for these devices and that should tell you the reason.

Any chance of some inter-vlan performance testing? I believe the UDM-Pro didn't get anywhere near 10gbps for layer 3 routing between two different vlans, would be interesting to see how much uplift we get for the clock speed increase on the CPU

I'm so confused, They removed the POE because it's designed for larger setup. But added a extra drive? In a larger setup you will have a separate NVR, either Unifi or more likely whatever vendor is specified by the customer. Also if the switch had a larger pipe to CPU and POE I could see it as a useful NVR replacement/all in one box. As it is, It's a 10Gb SFP router for larger environments, with a NVR and switch for a small environment strapped to it. Love your videos in general, but this device is not useful to me.

The built-in NVR is good enough for many situations as a lot of places you would have a couple of cameras on the outside of the building

Great video as always Cameron 👍 Probably a dreamer but I was hoping for an improvement over the 1GbE switch, even to 2.5GbE would've been a nice step up for us home users (with PoE too). Also seeing more devices supporting 2.5GbE lately, even my monitor (with integrated hub) supports it!

I don’t think it would make that much sense because how you would have to get a POE switch to run cameras and access points so this is clearly not an all in one device anymore

Now if they can just fix the software... Traffic stats being the main one. In the almost 3 years I've had my UDM Pro they've never been correct. Upload stats are generally almost correct. Example, download can maintain a 1.2gbps download speed. UDM Pro reports no more than around 100mbps or so. Tired of having to have an OPNsense box as a bridge between my modem and UDM Pro just to see traffic stats. Otherwise the hardware itself is great!! Just wish it was all 2.5G ethernet ports though.

I have 10gb dobson fiber :) just bought this switch , upgraded my PC's lan cards to 10gb lan cards, and it's insane fast, but what sucks is most online speedtest websites cannot feed me the full 10gb, if I use my dobson fiber internets speed test I get the speeds ... so even with full 10gb most speedtest online websites will still max you out around 2.5gb up / down you will need to use your ISP local test server to get a true test speed. But, when you got 8 people in the house streamking 4k content and your gaming ... setting up multiple VLAN's on my cisco 9300 switch has allowed all the traffic to stay segregated and run fast. I trunk my VLANS through 10gb SFP ports to this UDM pro max and everything is smoothe sailing with online connectivity.
@mk500
@mk500 2 ай бұрын
Say your ISP gives you 2gbit bandwidth with that new WAN port. You can’t actually access more than 1gbit of that using the built in 1gbit switch since the uplink is a single 1gbit to CPU. So you MUST buy a second switch. Can you see why this is in fact bad? It’s not “absolutely fine”. Or maybe you put a file server on the 10gbit SFP port. Same issue.
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 2 ай бұрын
Don't get me wrong, a higher speed uplink from the internal switch or 2.5gbit LAN ports would be nice, but I imagine that this was all considered by Ubiquiti when designing the product but was deemed not to be worth the additional cost based on the target market. Realistically this device is aimed more towards large scale networks that are going to need significantly more than 8 ports. While 2.5gbit LAN ports would be nice for sure, I imagine the subset of customers who have multi-gig WAN connections but don't have a requirement for additional switches is somewhat small. Of course there's also the option of having the integrated gigabit switch uplinked to the CPU at a higher speed while maintaining the gigabit downstream ports, but then you're still only really targeting people who have a multi-gig connection and are happy with only being able to get a maximum of 1gbps on each individual device. Also, with the way that these are architected internally, you wouldn't really want to have a file server on one of the SFP+ ports and then your clients on the internal switch ports as all of that traffic then needs to be forwarded by the CPU which isn't ideal irrespective of the speed of the link between the switch chip and the CPU. Of course the CPU is no slouch but in that sort of setup you really should be using a dedicated switch so that all of the traffic is being handled by a switch ASIC. My comments around it being "absolutely fine" was more in reference to when the UDMs first came out and there was a complete mess of people misunderstanding the architecture and incorrectly referring to the integrated switch as having "1 gigabit of switching capacity" and then essentially saying that it should never be used. I was basically meaning that the integrated ports are "absolutely fine to use" as long as you're aware that it's uplinked to the CPU at gigabit.

UniFi have a capacity calculator here: ui.com/cloud-gateways/resource-calculator. It only shows the regular UDM Pro/SE for now so the Pro Max would either be the same or slightly higher when it comes to camera capacity. In terms of storage, larger drives won't let you run more cameras - they'll just give you longer recording times. If you're needing serious camera capacity then you'd probably still need to go for a dedicated NVR, but a UDM should be more than enough for an average home/small business camera setup.

Openreach has launched 1.8 Gbps on premises with full fibre I think EE are the only ones offering the speed of 1.6 Gbps. But the Openreach ONT has a 2.5 Gbps rj45 port. So when you get upgraded to full fibre/fibre to the home if you haven’t already you should be able to take advantage of the 2.5Gbps WAN port on the UDM pro max.

Does not seem to be a worth while upgrade over the PRO or SE tbh, no poe (again) and only 5Gb/s on the IDS/IPS so not worth it for someone daft enough to have 10big ones coming into that wan SFP. The PRO and SE are happy with what most of us can get from out FTTP suppliers (1Gb's in the UK maybe going up slightly in the near future), inter Vlan speeds would be interesting though. Cant say the doubling of the hard drives is a big "win" for the money either. Seems like half a step forward - now if it could do 10Gb/s with the toys on.....
