Family Day weekend at Mew Lake Campground in Algonquin Park is always a good time. This year 94 campsites were occupied with 53 of them being hot tents, the largest display of hot tents in Ontario! I took some time during the weekend to go around to see as many winter setups as possible and get a tour from their owners and some information about their setups! Hope you enjoy this weeks video of the Campground Tour showing lots of different ways people like to winter camp in Algonquin Park. Thanks to everyone who participated and took the time to show me their setups.

Thank you. I actually have a newer tent also, the 3rd one I made last year. It’s for friends in the backcountry and is 10’x14’. There’s a video series on making it and a few trips I’ve taken it on. 😊 Cheers

Thanks Christina. It was interesting to the number of cots in use. But I guess if you are driving in, versus pulling a sled, you can treat yourself to a few more luxuries.

That’s exactly it Joe. It all depends on what you’re doing. Some people only hot tent like this in car campgrounds, other people like myself also backcountry camp bringing Gear in with a toboggan and lots of people cold camp as well which I’ve also done, but I’m not very fond of because I hate the cold. Lol. Hope you keep finding more info. Those cots are great btw. Huge difference in temperature between the ground and those 16 inches off the ground. Huge!

Hi, Christina! I will be watching this video over and over, and googling and googling. I'm determined to have a hot tent next year. Either make one like yours, or wimp out and buy one. So, so many good little ideas tucked into this vid. I'll be doing a Mew yurt in March, so baby steps! Doing some off-grid cabins this winter too, which helps as far as learning how to manage a wood stove. It means so much that you put these videos out. Knowing something is possible is most of the battle won right there.

jack mehoff thanks so much Jack! I could easily put a floor in mine but my tent is custom-made for the back country so it would just be like getting used to something I wouldn’t be able to have most of the time. They are quite nice though! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate your continued support!

PS - thanks to one of your recent videos with Sue, where you mentioned Puzzle Lake, I'll be snowshoeing there in a couple of weekends from now, and will definitely be doing a backcountry paddle camping trip there this summer. You're a tour guide and don't even know it! Free, at that. A big thank ya!

Kelly Martindale Thanks so much my friend! Sorry for the late reply. Been presenting at shows. I think the CO detector was in my tent/S. I always keep one around because when I started hot tenting people would send me messages in the middle of the night that they were worried I was going to die. 8 ounce canvas is very breathable however and I have not ever once had an issue but people need to know that we’re safe out there. Cheers!!! Ps: squeaky snow= cold temps

sue zaple lol they have 4 kids and 2 dogs so that much gear is needed. Lol. They also go for more than a few days unlike me, so again, needed. Glad you liked the setup. Gayle has got a good one also. Everyone does their own thing and that’s what I wanted to show. You can do it so many ways and as long as you enjoy it, that’s what matters. 😊

I have to ask about the logistics part of this event. Do you have to bring your own firewood, can you cut dead trees in the park, or even purchase wood from the park personnel? The last thing is what we do when we summer camp in a Metropark in Southeast Michigan, just outside Detroit. Thanks for any responses.
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 5 жыл бұрын
Robert Den Dooven This is car camping so you have to purchase firewood from the park or somewhere in the immediate area. For backcountry camping in the park you can use any deadfall. Cheers.

Doesn't the snow floor melt with the warmth?
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 5 жыл бұрын
dismaldog-William yes sometimes it does. Depends on how cold it gets and how long you stay. I usually shovel more snow in after day 1 if it’s melting a lot and that solves the issue. Even though it’s very hot in the tent, the ground remains mostly cold and only the snow near the stove will melt.

I have never gone winter camping, and was planning to go this year for the first time. I am wondering why is that I did not see anyone using those metal snowshoes at all. are those not needed?
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. This is in a car campground where they plough the sites and the road. Generally you wear snowshoes when you are breaking trail or walking in heavy snow. When I do backcountry winter camping trips I generally wear my snow shoes. For car camping they are not needed. Not sure if that answers your question? Let me know if not? Cheers!
@bilaliz
@bilaliz 3 жыл бұрын
@@CamperChristina thank you for responding. Yes that makes sense for car camping, but while camping don't people go out on trails and stuff? I imagine those trails would be packed with snow, are regular snow boots enough for a couple of hours of walk on a trail? I picked up a pair of snowshoes from Costco expecting they'll be needed.
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on where you go and when you go. Most of the trails in Algonquin, etc, get packed down fairly quickly so winter boots are usually fine. If there has been a lot of snow and the trail hasn’t been broken in that’s when you use the snowshoes. Or when I’m pulling a pulk full of gear, I will wear them for extra grip and to keep me from sinking in the snow. (They also called that post holing). Most places, unless you are going somewhere really far north, you don’t actually require them. Again, it depends on the snow conditions, how deep the snow is, how soft it is,etc. the purpose of a snowshoe is to keep you from sinking into deep snow or giving you more traction in snow, so if the trail is packed down already, that purpose is no longer needed. Lmk if I can help further. Cheers

This video I am going backcountry winter camping. Trail is only partially broken in and I am pulling a heavy sled so snowshoes yes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rqxki61itdqvj40.html
