Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ - but how do we know that Jesus rose actually from the dead? Here in Reasons for Christianity Part 4, I explain a simple model for defending the ultimate truth and proof of Christianity based on the work of Gary Habermas and Mike Licona using an acronym from Hank Hanegraaf.

What did Jesus sacrifice when he died for our sins? If he was brought back to life three days later, then exalted. Seems like his situation actually improved- no?

"After all, Lazarus was raised from the dead―didn't say a word about it. The daughter of Jairus was raised―didn't say a thing about what she went through. And the Gospels said that all of the dead rose from their graves and walked out to great everyone in Jerusalem. So it seams that the resurrection was something of a banality at the time." ―Christopher Hitchens

This is an excellent video. To my knowledge, though, evidence for the apostles all being martyred is thin (but I believe it). Does that book go into those claims? I'd love to know more.

I don't believe it does. We are pretty reliant on the early Church for that data but I don't think there is a lot of counter evidence.

A few notes. First, the historians you cite in support of the 'empty tomb' wrote long after the purported event. Josephus wrote in 93 or 94, Tacitus later, and Lucien wrote in 165. They were reporting what Christians believed. If, for instance, the 'empty tomb' was a legend, they wouldn't have known. Pliny the Elder, who died in 79 and who wrote about Jerusalem, doesn't mention Jesus at all. There are numerous credentialed historians who are mythicists, or who consider it a serious possibility, as a simple web search will verify. I am not a mythicist, BTW; "an Apocalyptic preacher named Yeshua lived in Judea and got crucified" is not an extraordinary claim. Second, you repeatedly use things written in the Gospels as supporting evidence for other things written in the Gospels. The supposed explanations for the 'empty tomb', or Jesus's physical condition upon crucifiction, for example. That's not legitimate; they're the same account. You say "even the enemies of Christianity admitted [that the tomb was empty]". Umm... according to accounts *written by Christians*, that is. I see insufficient reason to think there ever was a tomb. Third, note that Paul's account of hundreds of witnesses of Jesus's appearance is really just a story. As you say, he got that from groups of believing Christians. He didn't interview 500 people. We have only one person whose writing we can read who can plausibly be said to have seen Jesus: Peter. So one single post-mortem grief hallucination is all one need posit. And then he told others, and they believed him. Fourth, the 'transformation' of the Apostles isn't that dramatic. "All but one of them died for the faith"? Nonsense. That is flatly not supported historically, and promulgating it is poor scholarship at best. Peter and James, yes (and Paul, who never met Jesus physically). The other named Apostles vanish from history after Acts.

These are the kinds of evidences used by historians to establish historical facts and the process is far more nuanced and rigorous than you make it sound. If you want to take issue with what professional historians have concluded that's fine, but that's who you need to deal with - not me.

@@DouglasBeaumont Well, neither of us can go into a lot of detail: time and space restraints. Pretty sure that most historians, including Christians *speaking as historians,* don't claim the Resurrection as an historical event. I've heard several say so.
@DouglasBeaumont
@DouglasBeaumont Жыл бұрын
@Illithid Infidel Forbaure, youtube combine are not the place to discuss in detail. But this video is simply reporting the findings of historians and several pieces of historical facts need to be explained away if the resurrection didn't happen. That's my main claim in this video. Beyond this you're dealing with massive amounts of information.

There are chinese records during the event of the birth of Christ, his crucifixion & resurrection. 1. Christ's Birth Astronomy Records of the book of the Han Dynasty "天文志" of "汉书" 156、天文志:二年二月,彗星出牵牛七十馀日。 “In the second month of the second year, the comet was out of Altair for more than 70 days…It is said, ‘Comets appear to signify the old being replaced by the new.’ Altair, the sun, the moon and the five stars are in movement to signify the beginning of a new epoch; The beginning of a new year, a new month and a new day…The appearance of this comet undoubtedly symbolizes change. The extended appearance of this comet indicates that this is of great importance.” Matthew 2:9-11 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. Comet appears for 70 days, undoubtly symbolizes changes. The extended appearance of this comet indicates that this is of great importance. (approx 9th march to late may 5th BC) 2. Jesus's Crucifixion History of the Latter Han Dynasty Volume 1 Chronicles of Emperor Guang Wu 7th year "五行六" of "后汉书" 癸亥晦,日有食之,避正殿,寑兵,不听事五日。诏曰:“吾德薄致灾,谪见日月,战栗恐惧,夫何言哉!今方念愆,庶消厥咎。其令有司各修职任,奉遵法度,惠兹元元。百僚各上封事,无有所讳。其上书者,不得言圣 This paragraph originated from 後漢書 (Houchan shu) After the Han Dynasty, and it reads like this: "In the day of Gui Hai, the last day of the month, there was a solar eclipse(the emperor) avoided the throne room, suspended all military activities and did not handle official business for five days. And he proclaimed,‘ My poor character has caused this calamity, that the sun and the moon were veiled. I am fearful and trembling. What can I say?’...Anyone who presents a memorial is not allowed to mention the word ‘holy’." The time frame of such an eclipse phenomenon that happened in the Han Dynasty closely matched with what is described in the Bible Luke 23:44-46 : Luke 23:44-46: And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. History of Latter Han Dynasty, Vol. 1,Chronicles of Emperor Guang Wu, 7th year 夏4月壬午,诏曰:比阴阳错谬,日月薄食。百姓有过,在予一人,大赦天下。 光武帝7年 As translated: "Summer, fourth month (of the year), on the day of Ren Wu, the imperial edict reads,‘Yin and Yang have mistakenly switched, and the sun and moon were eclipsed. The sins of all the people are now on one man. Pardon is proclaimed to all under heaven." It is interesting to note that they came to that interpretation without knowing Jesus. 3. Jesus's death History of the Latter Han Annals No.18 Gui Hai 癸亥日蚀,天人崩。 “Eclipse on the day of Gui Hai Man from Heaven died.” 4. Jesus's resurrection (3 days later) History of the Latter Han Annals No.18 Gui Hai 光武建武7年4月丙寅,日有晕抱,白虹贯晕。 后汉书 志18 "During the reign of emperor Guang Wu, on the day of Bing Yin of the 4th month of Jian Wu, a halo-a rainbow-encircled the sun." Three days after the eclipse this was recorded by Chinese astronomers: Christ’s resurrection also apparently caused a celestial event that was observable.

Douglas is entitled to practice his Faith as his chooses. I'm not even bother by the personal criticism he throughs in. I certainly like the effort and skill he has put into this podcast. I would offer that of those Christians I have known: including my late wife, my father, school mate: these matters of of scant importance to their Faith. They Trust in God's love and that was always more than enough. But I would like to mention for those listening that the Gospels refer to a number of resurrections. Matthew describes hundreds with many undertaken by the disciples at Jesus command. John includes the most faithful disciple Lazarus whom was raised from the dead. Now Douglas does not say, but many Theologians assign these stories of restrictions as anoglorical. As for why Douglas might take out one aspect of the Gospels grand stories as historical but ignore similar events in the Gospel. Well that is for him to say.

@@michaelanderson4849the way you can actually know he is the messiah, is learning the oral torah, which was the messianic criterion for what the messiah must do. Its a massive list, and Christ does all of those things. The oral torah isnt written down, so you have to either speak to a rabbi or someone jewish.

old testament foretold Jesus as the messiah. Everything is in the Old Testament. Jesus was going to be born of a virgin, His Character-Holiness, healed the sick, suffering servant, made water into wine, crucified and resurrected. There was PROOF even before Jesus came as human that he would fulfill the prophecy. God can do anything, why doubt his resurrection.

@@mariochartouni That's not true. And even if he did exist, that says nothing about whether the legends about him are true. Imagine doing miracles in front of tens of thousands of people, and yet nothing whatsoever is remembered of it except a few anonymous gospels which were copying off each other. The problems are endless. The books are Roman propaganda. The Jews are almost never portrayed in a positive light and Romans are portrayed in a favorable light, despite being a period of great turmoil between Jews and Romans. Imagine that the people of Jerusalem are ready to welcome you as a king after healing literally thousands of people, and practically the next day there is a mob demanding your death, with zero people mentioned coming to your defense. More plot holes than a story about swiss cheese. Who is the person of greatest faith, according to Jesus? One of the disciples? No, A Roman army officer. The Jews were looking for a warrior messiah. The Romans made a story up that their messiah had already come and the Jews KILLED HIM. It doesn't get any more brilliant propaganda than that, make up a story that your enemy killed his own god and then feed it to him as a new religion - a religion of passivity so the Romans wouldn't have to worry about further rebellion.
