The golden age for airlines could be ending thanks to the spike in worldwide cases of COVID-19. A drop in crude prices would normally be a positive for airlines. However, border closings, event cancellations, and the potential for travelers to end up quarantined could cause a cascade of failures throughout the aviation industry. Now, major US airlines say they need a massive bailout from Congress to avoid laying off scores of workers.

New airlines would certainly NOT just take their place. It is a years long process to certify a new airline. Additionally, the most popular cities are either slot controlled like JFK, or gate constrained like ATL. The last new successful domestic carrier to launch was Virgin America. They are out of business today.

All they've done since then is screw over their workers and sink more billions in stock buybacks. NOW they're crying poor. Boo effing hoo. Let them all crash and burn, and Wall Street too. They have plenty of collateral they can put up for loans. When those profits turn negative, they don't have any money saved because they purchased stock buy backs or gave out bonuses. Airline industry is not actually a highly profitable business. They have the highest overhead and fixed costs in any industry. Imagine having a business wherein you’re held accountable with over 100 passengers lives plus having to maintain million dollar vehicles which does not run on normal fuel you buy in gas stations. Their profit margins are extremely thin and an event like this will actually cripple them financially.

Airlines don't deserve to be bailed out. Overselling seats, literally beating and dragging people out of their seats, tightening leg room, over charging, extra fees for checked bags, close to minimum poverty level pay for their employees, what the fk did they do with their cash flow? Now they need help??????????

Why do we have to save the airlines? Are the airlines doing something good for us when business is booming for them? The airline industry has plainy of money, their CEO's should get pay cuts too. Otherwise lets them go bankrupt, they don't do crap for us. When this is over the airlines are going to start charging for anything they want.

The Govt should provide the $1 trillion dollars and require ownership of all planes. Then the Govt can lease the planes back to the airline companies at 200% of value over the next 10 years. Airlines can either lease the planes, or they can buy new ones....

When I think about flying, I think of how uncomfortable and dehumanized I feel when I’m in someone else’s hands. Airlines have no warm place in my heart. Make flights more user friendly or loose your friends. In this case I say let the market figure it out.
