How long does it take you to get out of bed in the morning?
As an ADHDer, getting up can be tough for me... and also really, really unpredictable. Sometimes I'm out of bed in twenty mins to get going on whatever I'm currently obsessing over. At others, if left to my own devices, I can linger in bed for hours even though I'm desperate to start my day.
Here's the kicker: when I can't get out of bed, it's not just my productivity that takes a hit, but my sense of worth too. ADHD paralysis can feel awful at the best of times, but even worse when it means festering in bed for the best part of the morning.
So, finally, I have found a way to get myself out of bed in just a few minutes, and it works (almost) every time.
If you also struggle to rise (as someone with ADHD or any other neurotype), then give this a try tomorrow morning and please let me know how you get on!!
I'm wishing you all the neurosparkly success with this that I can ✨

In programming we call that “rubber ducking” - when you are troubleshooting something or working something out, explain it out loud to someone else, even if they aren’t there. (The person who coined the term had a rubber duck toy in their desk…)

Your sharing of the fundamental difference between language and thought processes - how one is naturally organized and the other chaotic - just helped me realized why I've always been better at making decisions when I speak aloud (usually to another person). WILD. Thank you for these videos 💛 I'll try this trick tomorrow and see if it gets me up!

Update: Next 12pm (12: 16) - I’m up! The sleepiest I’ve been (got better quick) - but I’m up. It was way quicker (and effective), but also WAY easier than I expected. Thank you so much! Literally, watching it from bed. It’s 2:37 pm. I woke up 1:15 pm. After intending to get up at 12 pm. (Work from home)

I agree. Good sleep habits (hate the term "sleep hygiene") make a world of difference. That said, I don't find I have to be uber strict about these things. I still use my phone in bed (scrolling and playing games) and as long as I read just before sleep and use this particular trick *before* diving into a reels session in the morning, I'm fine. I mention this because I've tried to ban my phone from bed so many times, thinking I had to, and it's just never stuck. I'm super relieved to find that things like these still work.

Absolutely. However! No matter how you have failed to maintain a perfect routine, you ALWAYS have the opportunity to be kind to yourself in the present. And the kindest thing you can do for yourself after staying up is getting some sun in your eyes, and starting your circadian clock. Thus making it far easier for you to fall asleep when evening comes. Always try to do what will make you feel best not just tomorrow, but when you're falling asleep tonight.

I've been trying to jumpstart my inferior function, which is extroverted Thinking (Te). Te likes to think out loud and use others (or even just the walls) as a sounding board. This...might actually be the key. Maybe indulging my Te will get it working for me and help me self-manage my ADHD. My steps: 1. Sit up 2. Take thyroid meds 3. Swing feet over edge of bed 4. Stand up 5. Put on slippers 6. Go use the bathroom 7. Check to see if the dog wants out 8. Adding a step: Go out and stand on front porch for a few minutes whenever it's sunny and/or breezy 9. Turn on bedroom light or open curtains to wake the snake up (she's started keeping my hours, and it's not good for her, since she's diurnal)

Guys I’m trying something new that seems to be helping- I set a “It’s okay, you can keep sleeping” alarm 25-30 minutes before I need to wake up which I’m fully allowed to turn off (make sure no snooze!). Then I have a wake-up alarm which I wake up but can stay in bed for 10-15-30 minutes until my “get up” alarm and one more “you should be up by now” and lastly emergency late alarm :) that waking up period can also be extended for creative thought or meditation in bed :) or for this video’s tool! Anyway much love, still figuring this out!

Something happened to me and I can get up early and without any issue, even if I stay late. Which is so weird. My son needs to sleep in till noon and I understand him. Once I wake up, I feel the need to get up and do things which end up in office. Then I have to find excuses to delay the start, journaling, planning etc, but lately I would start before 9 and be just fine.

I have 2 modes, melancholy and on it. Mo1: Deffo do the same, still don't manage to budge almost like shell shock😲. Mo2: get up before brain wakes up straight up and out don't stop won't stop till day done. So infuriating for me or for others. Nice hair btw😊

For me as soon as I hear myself start to talk, any train of thought I may have had goes right out the window. However, I've been doing something pretty similar to this via text for ages --- I'll pop into either my partner's or my sib's chat window, start typing a message that says "Okay I am going to ..." and then list out the steps in order. It generally works! And sometimes when I'm on step 8 I realize I forgot step 3 and I can go back and add it in 😂

So do you talk about your self in third person?
@Betwixt_App
@Betwixt_App 2 ай бұрын
Good question! There are some studies to show that first-person visualisation of future goal-achievement can be counterproductive, so if you do mention yourself, then the 3rd could be a great addition. I tend not to, though. But then again, I don’t mention myself much, either - I just list the steps: “1. Sit up… 2. Take meds…” etc.
