Hey Becky I’m a biologist and really my area was definitely in plants more than human health. I think your radishes are suffering from maggots and it actually indeed could be because of it being in the pot. Perhaps your container was overly wet for a long time or it could be that they hung out there during the winter in some pre-existing garden soil you’ve had and lived there in the soil kind of as a shelter. And in this case they probably had additional offspring in that same soil. Natural potassium from wood ash can help this and definitely use new soil and bleach all your soil containers. The soil your radishes were in in that container I would throw it away somewhere at the far end of your property, or better yet take it to the landfill. You can also AMEND a heavily dousing of diatomaceous earth (tilling into the s soil) once, then again a few days later, and then a couple of weeks later amend in a large quantity of any type of pepper you can get your hands on in somewhat bulk amounts. This could be cayenne pepper or black pepper or a mix of. I would do this in a 30 inch radius from where the radish location was. This is a little bit “extra“ but honestly could do the trick because maggots are kind of a pain in the butt and oftentimes don’t just go away on their own. This definitely happens to a lot of people through no fault of your/their own. It can just happen.

Absolutely. I started with large pots on my front porch. Then went to a raised bed, now I have 6 raised beds, a full garden and pots on the porch. Not too late to start fall vegetables now. Start them inside because they germinate in cooler temps. Transplant outside on an overcast day. You can squeeze in cabbage, Brussel sprouts into your landscape too. Any little bits helps and it’s very rewarding.

St. John's wort always needs to be used fresh! You can do partially wilted over night but it shouldn't be used dry. You're also able to use the leaves so no worries if you don't end up using the flowers. Simply chop the plant, allow it to wilt. Cut it up a bit and pour some vodka over the plant. The KZfaq channel She is of the woods is an amazing resource!

Hi Becky! About kale and how to make a good raw salad. Take some nice oil and some salt/herb salt and then you massage the kale with it. It sounds a bit crazy but that is the magic behind a good kale salad. In south western Sweden, where I live kale in different forms are traditional on the christmas table. 90% of all the loooooads of kale that is distributed and sold all over Sweden grows outside my hometown. I often do a salad with pomegranate , diced oranges, kale massaged with salt and oil and some roughtly chopped natural walnuts or almonds. Many people make a "stewed kale" or a pie, some eat it dried as chrisps or baked in a special hard flat bread kalled "knäckebröd". Loads of people make kale smoothies to, I have banana, lemon, water and apple in mine, perhaps a chunk of ginger. Sometimes I put vanilla in my kale smoothies, might sound odd but vanilla + kale is fantastic.

The next year it was left in the garden longer and it turned the purplish color. It had a bitter taste and the texture was different. I think we harvested the cauliflower too late. The cauliflower should be completely white. If it starts to turn a little yellow that means the sun is too hot on it. I've been told if you tie the leaves up around the head it will not turn yellow. Hi Becky. I rarely comment on KZfaq, but I had to say that watching your channel has inspired me to try my hand at preserving and canning. I have never done it before. The way you explain everything your doing is awesome and I see that it's not at all as difficult as I thought it was. I LOVE your channel and thank you so much for sharing a part of your life with all of us out here! ❤️

The reason one blanches things it to stop the enzyme action once it is picked. Some things (like corn) lose sugar and get starchy & pithy, some (like kale) can get bitter when not blanched. So use them faster if they are not blanched!! :) Your oregano looks amazing!!!

My husband and I were worried about a possible food shortage, so we started container gardening on our little deck (our yard is too rocky for in-ground beds) I stumbled onto some of your videos about a month ago, and have just fell in love watching how much you get done! Wow, I admire how fast and efficient you are with the preservation. It is so important to process the fresh quickly. For this of us that do not have a dehydrator or freeze dryer, herbs can be hung upside down and dried at room temperature. This works very very well. Depending on your temperature and humidity it takes about two weeks. Then can be stored as any dried herb is.

I’ve sealed it like you just did [the kale, that is] and I’ve also blanched it first. I found NOT blanching worked best for me, as I was able to chop it up more easily frozen unblanched. And my kids ate it. They found it better not to complain about the taste as I kept giving them it until they liked it! 😏 Actually, I never made them eat anything I wouldn’t eat. I just learnt to get over any dislikes in order to encourage them to try lots of new foods. They eat most things now. (All 6 of them). Thank you for sharing. 🌹Rosie of Oz🇦🇺 & 🐶Omega the Cavalier🐶

My GP ( general practitioner/ doctor ) highly recommended St. John’s Wart for my husband’s anxiety, but make sure if taking medicine it doesn’t counteract with it, since I know you can’t use it when taking some prescribed medication. I drank a lot of camomile tea when I breastfeeding my son, which helped lesson his colic! A happy colic free baby equals a good night sleep! The unfortunate part was I love camomile tea with honey and I couldn’t drink it when breastfeeding my son, since honey is deadly to a baby before they turn a year old. I’m going to look into a dehydrator so I can dehydrate some of my herbs and lemon balm and mint leaves, so I can have it all year long. My son is in the process of drying his garlic bulbs and onions, so they get a brown skin on the outside, the onions that is. Thank you for sharing your garden vlog and preserving technics, believe you me, it has helped me a lot!

Uhm.. Honey is perfectly fine to eat while you're breastfeeding, only the baby can't ingest it directly. But botulism (which is the concern) can't be transferred through breast milk.
@uncommonlyme
@uncommonlyme 2 жыл бұрын
Enjoy your tea with the honey, the baby will be fine!! Your son can't have it before turning one, but you can☺️ the raw honey eaten by babies can lead to botulism, but the milk is made from the mother's blood and nutrients that flow within it. So you first eat it, digest it, transfer the nutrients to the blood and then it will be turned to milk, no botulism there 🤗

Listening to you talk about how easy chamomile is to grow 😅 this is my 3rd year trying to grow chamomile from seed. 1st year, nothing came up. 2nd year, a little poof grew and then yellowed and died(pretty sure the greenhouse was too hot). This year's 3 survived. 2 are leggy bc I put them in a shadier spot but I have to single blooms finally! The third is a slightly larger "poof" I have in a 12" pot in the greenhouse I'm hoping to transplant somewhere 😅 I've been steadily biting off a bit more than I can chew in the garden but always learning!

I live alone, in an apartment. I can't have a garden here but I still have a dehydrator. I can grow a few herbs on my shady patio that I use fresh until wr start getting cold weather. Then I c I t back the herbs and dry them. If I have to buy any fresh herbs I will dry the leftovers. Any fresh veggies that I buy and can't use all of it before it starts going bad also gets dehydrated. It's amazing how little space dried foods take.

On the farm growing up my family soaked veggies in cold water with a good splash of vinegar to kill bugs,then after about 20-30 minutes it got the real washes in fresh cold waters,however many it took.Mom would pick out the floating bugs and feed them to the chickens..that grossed me out as a kid,but now even gardening,I take a lived jar and as I plant ,harvest ,or weed,pick off bugs(bad ones) and put in the jar,when I'm done, I pour out the jar to my chickens

About the French radishes, from experience you don't want to wait too much to harvest them: the bigger they are the more "bitter" they are which is why we always eat them with bread butter and a pinch of salt. I learned at a young age to take only the small ones and leave the big ones to my dad ;-) That might also help with the bug invasion?

I heard you can oven dehydrate stuff too. Is that true? Can you use chop up the fresh garlic and put it in some olive oil. Kinda like you can buy at the store? That’s a total bummer about the radishes. 😔
