At Jesus' trial, Pilate asked, "What is truth" At another time, Jesus said he was the Truth (Jn. 14:6) and today Christianity claims to be true. But can we know truth? Don't illusions and hallucinations prove we do not know reality? In this video, the second in the "Reasons for Christianity" series, we'll take a look at what the truth is and how we can know that we know reality.

A clear presentation. Ordinarily, we need a good philosophical understanding to be able to dive more deeply into the Mystery of God. Thanks Doug!

I read a book dealing with perception and was fascinated. The one vivid impression it left me with was our grasp of reality comes down to the movie our brains create within the interior of our minds. The author claimed that just outside the thin walls of our cell membranes the universe is cold, dark, and silent. I am even more fascinated by topics dealing with the nature and make-up of the soul and how it is capable of incarnating with material reality.

Stuff like that is interesting to think about but it's ultimately self defeating. If our perception of reality is just a movie playing in our heads, how could we exec come to know that? The conclusion that the universe outside our cells is just empty is a claim to know something the author can't know because whatever evidence he had for that movie idea would also just be part of the movie. It's just bad philosophy.

@@DouglasBeaumont I agree. Ultimately God is the only sensible conclusion to hold all things in existence; and to ensure what we perceive matches with the reality He created. For the novice who comes upon these questions it is a jolt to their sense of what is truth. For example most people would say a tree is green and think nothing more of it. In reality, colors are a perception. On top of that, what allows us to perceive green is the only color the tree does not absorb into itself but reflects back to us which allows us to perceive its existence at a distance. In some sense then the 'accidents' which allow us to perceive the tree in this way is in reality what the tree is not, or does not posess. Whether it is touch, taste, sight, etc. it seems we only come to know things by their 'accidents' or what they are not; and then infer what they must be through our rational process. Ie. I perceive the tree as green but I know it must retain every other color except the one I perceive. But knowing the attributes of God; that His knowledge is not by the accidents but of the direct knowledge of the thing itself. I especially liked the talk by Fr. Wolfe when he explained it this way. When God wants to know what I am doing at any moment; He doesn't part the clouds away and focus His gaze upon me on the Earth below to observe what I am doing. God simply looks in upon Himself and at all times and every moment knows exactly what I am about in His own knowledge; or in His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. Kinda off-topic and simply perhaps mention for your interest. I heard of another experiment dealing with our sense of locality. For example in my conscious awareness I perceive the center of my being to be somewhere between my ears and just behind my eyeballs for want of a better description. One researcher setup a mechanism of bi-focal cameras paired with virtual reality glasses such that the person navigated and experienced life like we see in thrid-person perspective virtual games. When the experiment stopped and the equpiment removed; the person experienced moments of psychosis because their sense of locality didn't match with being in their own body and it took awhile for them to recover from the experience. Really enjoying your videos and making my way through them after discovering your channel. Keep the Faith.

Yeah we have to be careful about holding people to more exacting standards than society usually requires. When someone says something like that I cringe on the inside but try to ask a few clarifying questions to make sure they understand what their words actually indicate. If they truly believe that truth is not absolute / universal then it's time for the more embarrassing questions. :)

We should remember, however, that we can think we know reality, but be mistaken. Sometimes we find out years and years later that we were wrong about something we were sure we knew. So we should generally not claim certainty about a proposition, but rather a confidence level, which may be arbitrarily high but can for most propositions never reach certainty.

Sure. I mention assurance in the video. I think there are far more propositions that we can be certain than this though.

@@DouglasBeaumont Practically certain, I suppose. As hard solipsism can't be disproven, all I can be completely certain of is that I exist and that I have memories and receive sensory data. I do agree that we can know things about an objective universe, in a pragmatic sense. Looking forward to other videos, although as you might guess from my moniker, we disagree on a few things...

Hi Doug, I shared this with my brother who’s very fundamentalist. And he said that the Bible does define Truth which is Christ. How can I explain the difference between what you’re talking about and the ultimate conclusion we all agree on that Christ is Truth? Thanks!

Great question. I'd ask him what the word truth meant before Jesus said that. The word must have had meaning before Jesus' claim. Second I'd point out that this is simply not what we mean by "truth." If someone says to tell the truth they don't just say, "Jesus." In other words, the only reason this is such an amazing claim is because of what truth means in normal use. This is also the case in the other 145 times "truth" is found in the Bible, so even a committed Fundamentalist needs to deal with it. ;)
