It's funny. I've always ditched the return lines on vehicles with carburetors with mechanical fuel pumps. Did for many years with many cars. Always thought the return line on cars with mechanical pumps was some sort of gimmick. Only had one vehicle develop the vapor lock issues you mentioned, and sure enough, putting an old 2-output fuel filter on it and using the fuel return line fixed it. Didn't click in my head until I watched your video, though. Thank you. Saves me from messing with carburetor spacers and junk.

This is perfect! Exactly the idea I had in mind for setting up a return line for my new build to prevent vapor lock this summer. I wanted to know what size hole to use as a restriction, I thought it would need to be bigger but this is great info! I had the same idea, slip a round piece of metal, going to use brass, into the return hose up at the T near the carb. Lucky for me I did a quick search and this video was the first one that popped up and it has exactly the info I need! Awesum! Nice build BTW! I'm a retired life long auto tech, I started twisting wrenches when carbs were still the norm and fuel injection was rare, I just love the old school carb. So many have asked why I don't got with injected, I just smile, cause it works! And it works very well if you know what your doing. Also picked up a AEM Air/Fuel Ratio gauge kit so I'll have it to help me jet the new carb I have coming. I bought an 85 GMC S15 truck with the 2.8 v6 which I rebuiltd with some goodies, going to run the V6 just for fun for a couple years then do an old school small block V* swap into the truck, with the lopy cam I have it it she turns heads and a lot of people ask me if it's a V8 ;-) Here's a short vid of the first run after rebuild last summer. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g56Re6lkq6qnc2g.html

Well I ran a big Holly on my last Ford 460 and I suffered with vapor lock all the time. But I never realized what it was or why it was happening. I had an electric fuel pump with no return line which was part of the problem. And another video pointed out that I could get a vapor/ fuel separator filter. Between the other video and what you shared here I think I solved the problem. Thank you for making this video!

I like the emergency repair that you came up with. Especially when you're pretty far from home and you've got to come up with a working solution. This shows me that you're a good man who knows what he's doing, even when the world sucks around you. Back before an ethanol neutralizing fuel additive was easily available, I had that "Blue" pump and the returnless "dead head" regulator set up. That was the noisiest and most problematic POS that I ever wasted my money on. The ethanol, in the gasoline, even at 10% per volume was enough to corrode all of the internal aluminum workings of that pump. This was because my Mustang sat up in high humidity Florida for 2 weeks. I'm sure glad that I decided to put the mechanical fuel pump's eccentric back on the cam timing gear when I went to the electric pump. Even though I wasn't going to use it, I recommend that a one piece type eccentric gets installed, "just in case", you get sick of the electric pump's noise and/or the reliability problems that go with it. I recommend the one piece eccentric, available from Ford Racing, versus the generally available, wider two piece because there's a chance that the two piece, being wider, will rub on the inside of the timing chain cover. As for keeping the fuel as cool as possible, I have a 1/8" to 3/32" phenolic spacer mounted between the engine block and the mechanical fuel pump, a 5/16" thick fiber base plate between the carb and my aluminum intake manifold and finally the exhaust heat riser ports are blocked at the intake mfd. gasket.

+Charles Georgoudis i dont remember exactly what i said in this video, but i was very thankful i had the timing cover and eccentric still inside my engine when my pump failed. very glad i had a spare mechanical pump. car run good with the black pump on the restriction. i really really should have blocked the heat riser ports on this engine. im assuming fel pro makes some gaskets that plate it off, or you made your own small plates to close it off. where do you get the gasket if there is one? my next engine im finishing up has an air gap intake and afr none crossover heads, so i dont have to worry about it thankfully.

ThunderHead289 I have a set of the GT-40 iron heads with a Weiand "Stealth" aluminum intake manifold. I was having issues with vacuum leakage on the lower portions of the intake runners because of gasket shift. The vacuum leakage got so bad that the engine wouldn't idle below 1000 RPM. When I pulled the intake, I found that the old gaskets had moved all over the place. To cure this, I bought a set of Fel-Pro 1250S3 steel laminate intake gaskets. This gasket set comes with 2 types of heat riser block off plates. One type has small holes for partial blockage and the other type which completely blocks off the heat riser passages. Here in Florida I went with the complete block off plates with good results. The steel laminate has kept the gaskets from shifting. So now, there's no vacuum leakage issues or vapor lock problems with the Florida heat. Summit sells these gaskets under part number FEL-1250S3 for $30.97. You'll find the full details in their listing for the gaskets.

I did the exact same thing on my big block Cadillac. Factory fuel setup - just a mechanical Carter fuel pump bolted to the block, putting out 7 PSI at 1200 RPM. Pump has a builtin return, but that didn't do squat for stopping the boiling fuel issue. So, I ended up with the same Holley regulator as you, hard-piped into my Edelbrock carb... regulator sits right next to the carb (less than 6 inches between them of hard-line). Going into the regulator is obviously a fuel filter, but right at the inlet of the regulator there's a brass Tee - and that goes to a 6 inch piece of hose with a 3/8 stainless bolt jammed in it. I drilled a 3/32-inch hole (0.094 inches), and then brought that back with nickel-copper hardline (which is what most of my fuel system is made of under the hood - the factory lines to the tank are stainless). I tied that into the factory return line coming off the mechanical pump. @UTG had suggested 1/16-inch which would be that 0.060 mark that you mention, but I figure my factory return line is about 20+ feet long in this old Cadillac, and it's skinny 3/16" stainless hardline, so there's going to be a bit of backpressure on that line as it is, not to mention my return has to share a line with the mechanical pump's return, so I figured 3/32 was worth a shot. Anyway - worked like a champ. Between this return modification and adding a 1" phenolic (the resin type that look like wood, but aren't actually wood) spacer, I have cured fuel boil off in the bowl, boil off in the pump, and vapor lock. I had that exact issue of high AFR values when sitting in traffic - and it would stall the car. A nightmare that I'm very glad is over now.

Hey guy - excellent video. I did the same thing. Installed a brass tee, but much closer to the carb inlet. Basically I've got about 4 inches of brass going into the carb inlet, and in front of that is the regulator (set at 4-1/2 pounds). On the inlet of the regulator is a tee, which has a 3/32" ( 90-thousandths ) hole drilled in a bolt stuffed in a short section of hose (almost all of this is 3/8 nickel-copper hard-line). That runs back and tee's into the mechanical fuel pump's vapor return line to the tank (which is 1/4" stainless steel - about 20+ feet back to the tank). Anyway, the stock (Carter M6622 is a reproduction of the OE pump on my car) fuel pump puts out about 7 pounds at idle, 8-1/2 or better at 1,500+ RPM. Running a mildly hopped up 500 Cadillac big block with an 800 CFM Edelbrock carb (took quite a bit of tuning to dial that carb in), and it maintains about 3-1/2 to 4 pounds at idle (lopey 750 RPM idle with a respectable street camshaft), and 4-1/2 pounds at about 1,100 RPM and above. Car never starves for fuel. I think that's the key here - you've gotta put the return tee *before* the regulator, and then put the regulator just a few inches from the carb. That'll mitigate any problems you were having with starving for fuel by putting the return tee after the regulator.

I just installed a fuel return line on my 65 bigblock Corvette. My plumbing was much simpler than yours but accomplishes the same thing. I have the same Holley non-return regulator and the same fuel log as you. I simply installed a 1/'4" hose barb in the port on the fuel log where a pressure gauge normally goes. I then drilled a .060" hole (actually 1/16" because that is the closest size I had) into a 1/4" nylon screw and inserted that into the rubber return line. Even though I have a mechanical pump fuel pressure was unaffected, probably because, unregulated, my pump was putting out 11 psi. The first thing I noticed was that the needle on my mechanical fuel pressure gauge is now rock steady whereas before it bounced around wildly at idle.

I insulated the fuel line from the fuel pump up, added a edelbrock insulator gasket bottom of carb, put on a holley fuel pressure regulator set to 5 psi and if i crank it after 20-30 mins it takes a long long long crank to startup still, but if i hold slight pressure on the gas pedal it fires right up. thats a great idea to use a bolt with a orifice hole as a restriction. Im going to do a similar set up. What size drill bit did you use? 1/16" hole down the center of a 3/8" bolt? i was thinking of using 3/8" all thread or 3/8" bar stock to avoid trying to stick a bolt head in a rubber hose.

Cut head off bolt. Use 1/16" bit. Bolt size depends on the size of the return line. I will probably do this trick soon too. Run smallest fuel line that will work with the fittings you can find. Also, don't run ethanol in carb engine! Sucks ass

That alone may have solved the traffic/vaporlock problem if it was a mechanical fuel pump probably, but the bulk of electric fuel pumps put out too much pressure as they intend to serve fuel injection. Extra work is heat in any fluid. Anyway... a fan with no shroud is mostly a noisemaker, but low pressure pumps for carbureted setups can be found without having to install a set of left handed bagpipes under the hood to compensate.

Great suggestion. But I'm nipple deep in trying to solve same problem. Holley electric pump at 7 psi feeding Edelbrock AVS on stock L31 3/4 ton crate engine with Air Gap manifold. 2" phenolic spacer between carb and manifold. After idling for 11 minutes, fuel pressure drops to zero, manifold at 140 degrees, spacer at 94 degrees, and carb bowls at 120 - enough to boil ethanol blend fuel. Carb is soaking heat from radiator air. Even if I chilled inlet fuel with Kool Kan, or installed a bypass, fuel would still percolate in bowls. I see 3 options: but non-ethanol fuel, shaker hood style scoop to isolate entire carb from engine compartment, wrap carb in copper tubing and circulate water(not engine water) through tubing. Any help out there?

Weird question, but why run a full size return line hose if it is restricted down to a .060 hole? I am not getting pressure on my F100 360FE. I have the bypass regulator set up with the a 3/8" fuel supply inlet, one outlet goes to a gauge then supply feed for carb, and the other outlet is a return line sized the same as the supply 3/8". I am getting good pressure at pump, but no pressure at the gauge/supply line. Im assuming that i need to add in a restrictor sized .040 - .060 to create enough back pressure to pressurize the gauge/supply outlet of the regulator?

Because my main fuel boiling when I put the IR gun on the line was between my regulator and carb, so I tried to cycle the fuel as close to the carb as possible. In reality the regulator should be mounted as close to the carb as possible. This is a poor setup in the regard. I have since reworked it and hung an auromotive regulator with gauge port right off the side of the carb. This was all just to get me by.

Good morning. Thanks very much for your time and assistance. I have a fuel pressure regulator installed now ... set at 8psi. I have a 160 degree thermostat, and my temp stays at 190 on super hot summer day in traffic. Can a camshaft cause a motor to run RICH at times? 🤔
@ThunderHead289
@ThunderHead289 8 жыл бұрын
if your under hood heat is great enough the air will become less dense and your mixture will be richer. when you set your idle mix screws, be sure that your engine is completely warm. also check your float height with the vehicle running. the hotter your engine gets the richer your mixture will tend to get since the fuel will be continually atomized better. (not always a good thing - hot fuel is less dense fuel and does not hold the same energy per stroke) a higher lift cam is much more touchy when it comes to idle adjustments, so if you are off the slightest bit, it will really show through. - with my 74 i have to adjust the mix screws and some other little things every time the temp changes by 20 degrees or so.

I realize this is an older video, but my question is related to the subject. I have a 1959 GMC 150 with a 1972 Chevy 350 with a 2 Barrel Holley 4412 carburetor. I recently got it running after it sat for about 10 years and put a new fuel pump and a brand new Holley 4412 on it (It had a 4412 on it before, so I just stuck a brand new one on it since I had one on the shelf.) It started and ran really well. I pulled it out of the shed it was sitting in and idled it up towards the shop. I stopped it in front of the shop and let it idle for a good 15 minutes then shut it off to go get lunch. I came back and started it and decided to drive it to my dad's place which is about a 1/4 mile away. It ran really good until I pulled it into the driveway and let it idle to let my dad check it out. As it was sitting there it started to run kind of rough and died. I jumped back in to start it and it wouldn't even try and start. So I pushed it into his shed for the night and didn't come back to it for a couple weeks. When I got the time to look at it again, I thought I would get in and try to start it just for shit's and giggles. It started right up with the temp outside being 50 or so degrees. It sat there and idled like a champ for a good 5 minutes. Then I shut it off and restarted it, it took right off. I let it idle for another 5 or so minutes and shut off then left. Could my issue be vapor lock since it started right up after the motor being completely cooled down? I think I can firmly disregard it being a carb or fuel pump issue since they are both brand new. What are your thoughts? If you do think it's vapor lock how could I go about remedying or fixing it without installing an electric fuel pump? I want to keep this as mechanical as possible. Any tips or suggestions would be great!
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 6 жыл бұрын
Hard to say, but I'm a bit skeptical of your issue being caused by vapor lock. Vehicle of that vintage has had a lot of hands on it over the years, and things also deteriorate. Not to mention the damage critters can do while sitting. Going to have to trouble shoot the issue while it is happening. Stick with the basics. If it won't fire try some starter fluid or dribble some gas into the carb. If it still won't fire, check for spark. Adding electric fuel pumps tend to add a lot of unnecessary complications for many rides.

Good job on he video Thunderhead289, I have watched a few of your's I'm having vapor lock Issues with my 72 Monte Carlo with a 350 and a Edelbrock carb (hate that carb) running the mechanical fuel pump but I'm in Fl. and it gets hot you can see the fuel pressure drop to around 3 psi when the motor get to like 180/190F (I added and reg. and gauge) just to watch it.... I can see the fuel boiling in my glass fuel filter going to carb. I bought an electric Pump from Carter one of their nice ones and another fuel pressure regulator from Jegs that has a built in return but the return in the reg. is the same size as the Inlet at 3/8" I was going to install the whole system but saw this video. My Question: Should I restrict that return on the regulator? Also you have any experience with Edelbrock's? after I shut down the car and it's hot I have to crank and crank to get it to start again... when cold it starts right away, unless I let it sit for a week then I have to crank and crank, I put a phenolic carb spacer but has not helped ....
@ThunderHead289
@ThunderHead289 6 жыл бұрын
First item to address here is the hard warm start scenario - i bet if you crank it and hold the pedal to the floor it fires right up. what has happened is that fuel has expanded in the carb, and in the line from under hood heat and blown into the carb and overflowed out the boosters. on the regulator bit, a true return style regulator should have a metering orifice that resembles a carb jet on one side - i like to mount them after the fuel rail so that you get full fuel circulation through the fuel lines. I honestly need to do a test on this - probably making a video over it here soon to verify how the return regulators function. what i did here on the galaxie worked well, but i had such a large fuel pump tat with even wide open throttle i never lost fuel pressure.

Any recommendations on a return regulator? as the one I have and have seen out there all have a large return same as inlet, I figure I try going to electric fuel pump before I yank the Edi and replace it with a Holly or one of the Summit carbs you use. The Edi has never worked right... so you think the fuel is boiling and expanding in the carb and flooding the intake? I have to try the gas pedal all the way down as I usually pump the heck out of it as I think it's starving for fuel. BTW, thanks for the Impute
@ThunderHead289

Mike Q no problem - if holding the gas pedal to the floor works, she’s flooding out from heat soak fuel percolation. I use an quick fuel return unit I do believe. Either thy or an aeromotive unit. I’ll really need to test this set up in the video against a regulator and see if they actually just work the same way.

But there is still quite a bit of "deadhead" hose between the fuel return plumbing and the carburetor, plus there is all the fuel in the carburetor reservoir that is subjected to the heat, and is not cooled by fresh fuel circulation. The proper set up is one where the carburetor itself was designed and built with a fuel return line that also already has a restriction built into the line to provide enough fuel back pressure. Like the carburetor i have in my Suzuki Carry.

i want to say that on the glass sight floats, the fuel level should be half way. i could be wrong. havent had my rig out for 4 months due to winter. you may be having issues where you have pressure in the line when you shut the engine down, and then the fuel in the lines right above the engine expands. this causes the pressure to rise and blow open the needle and seat and overfill the bowl. i just went out and looked at my truck, and the fuel should be at the very bottom of the sight glass for proper jet operation.

But then I learned about this it turned out that it was actually my new radiator hose that caused my problems, that was replaced from an old cracked fabric braided hose with a new shiny un-braided hose. Never thought that fabric braiding was so important. XD
