Tig welding root pass on 10-inch carbon pipe. Field weld TIG techniques! This video is about the combination of the tig welding techniques, such as; the constant feed technique, and dipping method on the root, hot pass, and cover pass or cap. The welding technique used will depend on the thickness of the pipe. You can either free-hand or walk the cup on a thin wall pipe. This is because you will have a shallow bevel that you can walk on with the cup. If it is a heavy wall pipe you will want a cup size that is small enough to fit between the groves and slide easily. The video gives viewers good insights into placing excellent and solid root passes. You will get to learn about different technical paths that you can explore. With the appropriate training and practice on the operator's part, learning to place the root can become an invaluable skill!

Since you had a pretty inconsistent gap, I was wondering if you could do 5/32 laywire in the spots you had a 5/32 gap? Also what heat would you run that on for the 5/32 lay wire or would it be best to do the dip technique
@X3MTIG
@X3MTIG Жыл бұрын
Hey bud, yes you could. I would prefer to use 5/32 rod on 1/8 gap instead, as I will crank up the amps and push that rod inside the root with laywire technique. Probably around 140-150 amps.

Hey sir as a 2nd year I was always told that if you have the ability to tie in perfectly then you dont need to worry about stopping too much. Obviously a seasoned pipe welder usually can run from 6-12 no problem. But I was wondering if thats kind of a myth?

Hi mate, as always good video. My question is, how many weld joints u are able to do in one shift? Is it 250 or 300 mm pipe diameter? I like to watch how do you weld, im welding as well, but always love to see how someone else is welding.
@X3MTIG

I’ve been practicing back feeding but I’m having a lot of trouble. The inside of the pipe looks decent, but the weld on the outside of the pipe on the overhead section is very droopy. Any suggestions?
@cleon135
@cleon135 Жыл бұрын
I've found that happens when you're running a bit hot or sitting in one spot too long. Try turning down 5-10amps so it allows you to catch up with your wire if you're not comfortable with traveling faster. You really wanna make sure you're pointing at the bevels instead of right in the center. I had to mess around with a lot of things to finally get less suck back on mine aswell just takes practice👍

Lower your amps,you're burning the edges.
@shawnramey614
@shawnramey614 Жыл бұрын
cleon135 Thank you for taking the time to reply. I greatly appreciate that. I tried turning down the amps and it actually made the humping worse on the outside. When I ran it hotter, it laid a bit flatter. I think that I’m not traveling fast enough bevel to bevel? Also, what angle should I hold the filler metal at? I’m holding it straight down through the top of the pipe as I weld the bottom
@cultm
@cultm Жыл бұрын
@@shawnramey614 Hold your filler wire between the gap,and try backfeed. It will be easy if you walk the cup,bottom part of the pipe; push more rod, try like back feed technique. On the side wall or 9 o’clock speed up or pull rod slightly outside the bevel, and on the top part; speed up, keep rod above that bevel edge, gravity will push that puddle down.
@shawnramey614
@shawnramey614 Жыл бұрын
gruzin500 Thank you so much for the tips! I believe that’s what I’m doing wrong as I’m backfeeding, I’m not pushing the wire slightly outside the bevel, I’ve been keeping it fully on the inside!

Hey bud, that’s something you have to discover by yourself. Videos can help you to understand basics, but you need to experiment what’s working best and improve in that direction. Could be lots of factors, like; inclination, amperage, travel speed, gap, etc. Prepare few pipes with different gap size, and see would it work better. When I started with welding I was making notes of what’s working and what not!
