Yes, before smartphones, we looked elsewhere for entertainment. I play solitaire countless time. There are really so many to play. Blackjack, slap jack, poker and more. There were games our grandmother taught us, but I never knew anyone else who knew what those games were.

As long as coronavirus is around, we have to play the hand with we are dealt. Our teacher Jennifer always lays her cards on the table when it comes to grammar secrets of English. Mr. Trump was not playing with a full deck when he claimed voter fraud. One should always have an ace up his sleeve. As life doesn't go as planned. Please check my grammar! Stay blessed!
@Englishwithjennifer

Great practice with real-life examples! The last example is one sentence: One should always have an ace up his sleeve as life doesn't often go as planned. (I added "often," but "usually" could work too.)

@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. You're likely right because we can substitute other words (more familiar ones) and see the structure more clearly. >> He gave the book to Julia. / He gave Julia the book. (direct object = the book, indirect object = Julia) The basic pattern is SVOO.

We learned some super card idioms there. We can also be described as having a poker face and we can trump an opponent. Someone with a poker face would be a person who doesn't reveal their emotions. To trump an opponent would be used when someone has outwitted someone else. Ironically, it looks like President Trump has been trumped by his opponent. Vice President Biden may have played the trump card with one of his statements or policy ideas.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
It wasn't easy to limit my selection to four. Maybe I'll do a follow-up for members so that I can cover more. :) I think Trump has no more aces, but he'll certainly try to play the hand he's been dealt and play it every which way he can before conceding. This is an incredibly tight race, and neither side is going down without a fight. Time will tell.
