Please note that you need to have the cams in the correct position lobe wise as they can open the valves in to the piston as you go down. Please notice this as you know piston 1 and 6 is at TDC do not allow the lobes to push the valves open on those cylinders as you do it up. You actually tighten all of the cam caps gently at the same rate so the cam goes down level with even pressure on all of the bearing faces.
@stoneshrink
@stoneshrink 2 жыл бұрын
when he talked about going to 10 nm my heart sank. you need to get the caps down, ideally a turn on each bolt so that it equally pushes it down, that said, had he ran it down with his electric wrench to where the bolt head just touches the cap, he'd likely have been fine. Ah well, I'm not throwing stones, I've been there and learned from it too.

Unless that cam is massive you have nothing to worry about on a 1JZ, they are a non-interference motor, but still good general advice.

I always rotate the engine off TDC when installing after market cams and then align valve timing. If piston to valve has not already been checked.

i've always turned the motor off tdc so no pistons are at the top regardless of motor, then ran all bolts down to the cap about half a turn or so on them and then ran it through the sequences with the same amount of turns on each. a little more time consuming but it's allowed me to avoid doing this. unlucky tho man, happens to the best of us. hopefully the next cam you pay a bit more attention haha. keen to see the trolvo hit the strip again

The simplicity in how you set tdc is genius-no degree wheel required Love to see how you do valve lift (obviously not on the trolvo) And, deez nutz 😂👌
@DodgyBrothersEngineering
@DodgyBrothersEngineering 2 жыл бұрын
A degree wheel isn't used to find TDC. A degree wheel is the used to find the cam lobe centre line of the cams relative to TDC so you can advance or retard the cam/s to set it to specification. You can use a deck bridge like Scotty used, measure through the spark plug hole if the head is on, or put a dial indicator on the rockers to find TDC, after using one of those methods you adjust the pointer on the degree wheel to zero to then use it for its intended purpose.

When you get this fired up I can wait to hear it idle. Say goodbye to engine vacuum. In the next episode of Carnage Scotty installs a vacuum reservoir so he has some brakes to stop with. I put 272 / 278 cams in my SR20 it had very little vacuum at idle. Although a lot of that came down to intake manifold as well.

Well shit, that sucks mate 😔 One thing I've learnt with these sorts of head are to tighten the caps down slowly over all the caps to keep the cams looking as level as possible. This spreads the valve spring loads nice n evenly and once all snugged down is when I creep up on the torque setting using the workshop manual.

Oops. After you snapped the cam and explained where you went wrong and how you will do it differently next time, I'm still not sure that you totally grasp the concept of where you went wrong and therefore (if so) are highly likely to do it again. The cap order is less important than the incremental aspect of the tightening sequence Each tome you turn one of the nuts that hold the cap on, It's important to only turn them 1 - 1.5 turns per stage until they bottom out and can then be torqued to spec Failing to do this will likely result in it happening again.. I used to reco heads for a living mate so take this advice or leave it. cheers.

Loving this channel, thanks Scotty for showing everything warts n all. When I saw the video title I thought maybe you were going to have an issue with incorrect torque figures in the manual. I ran into that with a wrx quad cam engine, the caps go down to bugger all but the manual said twice the real spec for the end ones. Trap for the inexperienced. I was also worried we’d snap a cam too doing pretty much what you just did. We were lucky, the motor fired up right away with no issues. Looking forward to this thing hitting the track.
