You did a wrong test. Test should be both cars tank full. Then drove 100 miles and refill the tank again and check how much it cast to full the tank. And get the 100% mpg

@@ninakozlova2181 I do not see a problem in using different cars to demonstrate the efficiency of diesel engines. I would agree that the method used could be better. In addition, if the test was done in the city only, the clear winner would be the hybrid. Further more, if the 1.5 liter Yaris hybrid was used instead of the 1.8 liter Auris the result would have been undisputable.

It depends a lot on your driving style when it comes to hybrid. The same engine can return 76mpg if driven properly with the use of hybrid indicator but if you keep pushing the gas hard, the same engine will hardly return 45 miles to the gallon.

I must be miss something here, hybrid cars are designed mostly for cities and short distances, they shine in situations of continuing "stop and go" , not for long distances where of course diesel rules, i believe the hybrid has outdone itself

That's because you'll run the battery out running in the long distance, the battery is recharged on stops, and begins after the gas gets it started, so it's designed for countries like Japan where they're not going to be going for long drives.

I had a Ford Focus 1.8 tdci and now I have a 2015 auris hybrid. Long straight journeys at a regular speed the diesel gave better mpg, but city driving the auris. I loved my ford however the auris is so much more of a pleasant drive. Quiet engine unless really flooring it, no smelly fuel coming out of the back. Less maintenance with things like starter motors, DPF, discs and pads. Plus free or with the 2017 up models very low road tax. I cannot think of any reason why I would choose that Skoda over the auris. No brainer in my opinion even if the Skoda did last a little longer. I’d be willing to bet that the auris will be cheaper over the course of your ownership.

To move a certain weight you need to consume a fixed amount of kw/power ... 1.6 or 2.0 has to produce the same kw requirement .... petrol or diesel its like a KW storage liquid multiplied with engine efficiency ... so its the same fuel amount required for the same amount of kw needed ... but the moving friction or weight of a bigger engine can require some extra fuel but not so much more ... the start stop system reduced the amount of fuel spent in traffic jams where big engines have higher fuel waste ... small engine has no problem but people "reasonable expectations" are not reasonable at all ...

2021 in France now. The price for Diesel now almost matches the price for E10: would the test raise the same results? We now have E85 by the way. But besides that, there are so many untold things in that video that I don't know where to start from. Hybrid really shines in cities, suburbs and rush hours where it goes almost full electric; in comparison all thermic cars overburn fuel for stopping in a few dozen meters, overheat the engine in long jams, and wear gears for no result. But in open roads and highways, Diesel are the best per gallon if you put aside NOx. It would have been more interesting to compare Hybrid/E10 with E10 in different test tracks.

I have my 2017 Auris estate, i manage to get from 40L fuel 850km or 531 miles, mostly in city traffic. No turbo or injection headache, no EGR or DPF troubles, no cluctch or timing replacment, low emisions. Cheap to run. Never diesel.

Totally correct in city traffic. Getting the same average fuel consumption as you with my TDI Octavia. But maybe only 30% city traffic. Diesel needs to warm up. Never buy for mainly short trips. Problems are guaranteed.

You cannot rely on empty tank to measure how much fuel you used, this depends in reserve volume. Refiling to 100% and checking how much fuel you used would be way better.

Nice test, great video! Toyota Auris 4,94 l/100km Skoda Octavia 4,79 l/100km Both car is pretty good, but I chose Toyota. Maybe Toyota Yaris Hybrid - who is most selling hybrid car in Germany, other europe city too. Because more reliable than PSA or VAG, fuel consumption almost same, and diesel is more expensive maintain, often break, like: turbo, egr, injectors, DPF, flywheel... and same sh*t.

Diesel is great if you drive 30k miles per year in highway like Truck driver. For most people who drives for work in cities and urban area, Diesel is more expensive in Fuel, maintenance, Road Tax, and repairs. Most Toyota hybrid only needs oil change for the first 15 years, with 15 years HV battery warranty. Diesel will have DPF problem, catalytic converter issues, Limp mode, etc. for most people who drive it in city. The annual tax alone cost €200 more in Diesel, DPF filter replacement cost as much as hybrid battery replacement and last no more than 5 years if you rarely drive in the highway. Diesel is death, that's the fact, and it will be rest in peace for cars and small van. It fits for big trucks and Trailers.

In terms of fuel consumption, Hybrids are best in city driving or short driving. Diesels are kings in long haul driving. However, Hybrids are easy on maintenance like for instance, Prius; like no belts to break, no alternator, no starter, no-belt CVT.

Hybrid batteries need to be at optimal temperature before they’re at the most efficient and engage and on newer batteries they take longer to warm up can and once engine hits stage 4 after 20 mins depending on weather it uses hybrid battery more (experience with Prius assuming hybrid in video is similar) this comparison is rather pointless not to mention motorway driving is mostly engine in a hybrid.

Would be better if the fuel amount was equal, not so much by price. Wonder why they don't just make hybrids that run on diesel? Diesel will always beat the weaker fuel of unleaded gasoline. In the US we don't really have cars that run diesel. It is all unleaded fuels. We have personal trucks and of course commercial rigs that all run diesel. If Toyota cares so much about environmental causes. Why are hybrids not setup for flex fuel? Thanks.

pointless to do a test on parameters that fluctuate so often. Doing it by the volume of fuel would of made more sense and also proven which car is more efficient. They labelled it as hybrid vs diesel but they was they did it it’s more cost of petrol vs cost of diesel.

€20 of different fuels not a true like for like. The diesel Octavia had over .6 of a litre extra than the petrol Auris. Why not have done the test over 20 liters exactly each. Bases on liters it was a draw. Well done Toyota in that case. Good test but flawed when different liters in each vehicle

Yes, the test is a bit flawed, but not in the sense you imply. What was tested here is purely the running costs of these vehicles which is exactly what matters in real life to a price conscious consumer or a fleet manager. What you are implying here with the claim that equal amounts of fuel should have been used, is that the goal of this test should have been to test the efficiency of these drivetrains. In that case, since diesel is about 5% more energy dense than petrol, the amount of fuel should be different, suppose 13.38 litres of petrol and 12.78 of diesel. Also before the test the battery pack of Auris should be depleted fully, the weight of cars should be equal etc. Anyway, all of this is irrelevant because all that matters here is the running costs and in that sense diesel is still unbeatable, no matter how you look at it.
@thelesls
@thelesls 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheStormix you've made quite an interesting point. For a more accurate measure, the Auris battery pack should have been depleted before the test. This would definitely took away some extra km from it's reach.

Toyotas "self charging" hybrids are rubbish for fuel economy. My petrol toyota Aygo beats even the small Yaris hybrid on fuel economy at 72mpg which is free from the chains of a batteries SOC. I got 500 miles on 30L of petrol on my last tank... 75mpg or 3.73L/100km. I think toyota need to develop a smaller more efficient engine for their hybrid range.

they should have a fully charged PHEV and knock the cost of the electricity off the amount of fuel they put in. And also run them against a bog standard petrol car. And then (here's the kicker) run it against my 21 year old Renault Megane running on half price LPG. That would have done 330km on 20 euros' worth of fuel with old technology, and beaten all of them. Progress? I don't think so.
