For decades now, Cartoon Network has been a memorable part of many of our lives, myself included. It's hard to say definitively, but it's a common opinion that they've experienced a significant decline followed by a respectable comeback. This video takes a look at the situation and attempts to identify reasons behind it.

I've seen all the comments and you're absolutely right. Toonami was big for the network and absolutely should have been mentioned in this video. I never watched it personally so it was easy for me to overlook it. Thanks to everyone who pointed that out, hopefully this comment is a step forward in fixing this injustice.

Dude, Space Ghost Coast to Coast was HUGE for the development of Cartoon Network. Space Ghost was their 1st foray into "adult" cartoons which was the launching point for Adult Swim, their popular late night lineup. Also Space Ghost Coast to Coast featured the "Baffler Meal" segment that was the predecessor to Aqua Teen Hunger Force, my all-time favorite show

I think their best era was probably in the 90's and early 2000's. They were still airing a lot of the older cartoons while also bringing in a lot of new content, plus making their own kind of universe with the commercials of all the animated characters together in a city. When the original shows started reaching the end, they kind of released a lot of low quality shows and even Toonami was cancelled, so less action anime made it onto the network. Then they just started spamming TTG, erratic release schedules for other shows, cancellations of half way decent shows, and the network was basically unwatchable at that point.

I always missed those times. I loved the old and new. Perhaps I loved the old more. But Toonami and early Adult Swim got me back into anime and became my favorite part of CN. @dillonmoore9810
@dillonmoore9810 2 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling it wouldn't be taken well, the pacing and style of newer shows wouldn't mix well with the classics not that there's a problem there. But it would be absurdly jarring to a kid hyped up after an episode of their favorite show Teen Titans Go to then go to something like older Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny, Jetsons/Stones, even the 'newer' shows like Dexters, Courage, Samurai Jack, Billy/Many or Fosters Home. I personally feel that shows like TTG are dopamine catharsis to these kids growing up around immediate satisfaction and entertainment. If that Scooby episode is boring they're booting up their tablet to play Roblox until something else comes on.

*Cartoon Network 1992-2004:* perfect, absolutely perfect. They had a lot of variety in the schedule, they had amazing originals, they had a *HUGE* library of Cartoons. They were truly on top of the world, and they also helped anime become very popular thanks to Toonami. *Cartoon Network 2005-2008:* good. The new programs were weaker and the channel no longer had their pre-1990s stuff, but they were still good. *Cartoon Network 2009:* awful, Cartoon Network focused on *LIVE-ACTION* more than Cartoons, which makes no sense for a channel named *CARTOON* Network. *Cartoon Network 2010-2012:* Cartoon Network managed to become great again during this era. CN during this era was more experimental, and the network tried to push the limits of what a kids show can have during this era, as many of their programs were rated TV-PG. It also has Regular Show, my all time favorite CN show. *Cartoon Network 2013-2015:* Cartoon Network was middling during this time period. The network would start to focus on TTG a lot during this time period, and by this time period, Cartoon Network had no 22 minute action shows beside acquired anime. Plus, Adventure Time and Regular Show would go downhill during this time period (thankfully, Regular Show improved during the 7th season), and the scheduling got worse during this time period. *Cartoon Network 2016-2017:* terrible, this era was the worst for CN in my opinion. TTG at this point would take up nearly 100% of CN's schedule, and not only that, TTG was the only show CN advertised, and CN's new programs were terrible reboots of good shows, and those reboots were in an attempt make those franchises replicate TTG. CN also lost the rights to Pokemon because CN lost respect for anything that isn't TTG. CN also treated any show that wasn't TTG terribly, even Gumball. *Cartoon Network 2018-present:* They are meh at this point. They have thankfully improved their schedule and started putting less emphasis on TTG, which was a great thing CN did, and they started treating their other shows with respect (even airing their older shows on Christmas week 2021), but the reason why they are meh now is because they don't really have anything interesting on anymore, and TTG still airs a lot, but not as much as how it did back in 2017. I am glad CN is improving though. Eras ranked: 1992-2004 > 2010-2012 ≥ 2005-2008 > 2013-2015 > 2018-present > 2009 > 2016-2017

I tuned out around the time of all the live action shows coming out. In fact, it was around that time where my family was considering the idea of cutting out TV in general, so we decided to try that. Since then, I still haven't really sat down to watch TV, even to this day. I've heard about some of those shows that came on after the live action stuff ended, but I haven't been looking that closely. It seems a lot less important to me now, but I'm at least glad the kids tuning into Cartoon Network in the last few years have had some good things to watch, just like I did in my youth.

Let's Be Heroes, Regular Show, Original Teen Titans (Can't bare watching Teen Titans Go!), Chowder, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Foster Home for Imaginary friends, Time Squad, Codename: Kids Next Door, Johnny Test, Mucha Luncha!, Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, The Looney Tunes Show(2011), Megas XLR, Xiaolin Showdown/Chronicles,Infinity Train and Justice League plus Unlimited, The Batman 2004 are ones I won't forget(Including all the anime showcases like Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, Megaman NT Warriors, Duel Masters, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, Battle B-daman, Bakugan, Deltora Quest on CN as well) and I would rewatch them if I could. Though there aren't as many quality cartoons as there use to be but I'm still moving on to concurrent releasing cartoons like Ollie's Pack, Cupcake and Dino: General Services, Mao Mao Heros of Pure Heart and Unikitty. For those who are looking for fun, quality and somewhat character driven cartoons I do recommend those four that I mention that are still airing new episodes or re-airing older episodes that are quite good. But everyone of them goes to show that they are more then just cartoons but are works of creativity with passion behind them.

@TheSteelmushroom
@TheSteelmushroom 3 жыл бұрын
@@suckyomom6179 Well it not just that the original is way better because of the art style, huge plots and awesome action is why people hate TTG. It because TTG is just awful in general since it over uses cheesy jokes, tries insulting the audience with fourth wall breaking, too awkwardly weird at times and always likes to constantly shove its message of the episode down your throat too much in the most obnoxious ways possible rather then be creative to have fun or create a story with that message. It does have cool or fun moments here and there on rare occasions which is the best thing I can honestly say about it but the overall quality is garbage. I mean TTG probably can't be the same or similar to the original and I get that but at the same time for the most part they aren't making it enjoyable to watch. I wouldn't mind if it was say similar to Unikitty or Spongebob where it was mostly exaggerative/fun with some continuity or is character driven and a lot of people would probably dislike it a lot less but I think they're doing a bad job intentionally since they acknowledge it time to time. Same goes for the reboot of the powerpuff girls or Ben 10 which are embarrassing stains for such amazing cartoon franchises and CN just doesn't care so I'm disappointed at them. Powerpuff Girls Z was the reboot that the franchise deserved and it was a great one that they should of left it on that if they can't make any more good continuations but nope. Also on the rare occasion they do air the original Teen Titans as a throw back on that alternating theme channel but you got to catch it.

Personally, throughout all of my rantings about networks failing, one of my main criticisms has always been toward networks lacking that care toward their older shows and I believe that Nickelodeon (and Disney Channel) are both prime examples of this. Over on Nickelodeon, they air something known as The Splat on one of their sister channels Teen Nick. While it is a late night block, Nickelodeon at least has the decency to air their older cartoons even if they're just simply ones from the 90s era. Meanwhile, on something like Cartoon Network, there seems to be a neglect toward their older cartoons. Ever since Boomerang rebranded itself to some horrid modern design, the lack of older cartoons has significantly increased. No more Ed, Edd n' Eddy, no more Powerpuff Girls, no more Camp Lazlo, no more Fosters, ect. You get the point. Boomerang has basically become a place where they air Tom And Jerry for hours along with shows that should air on CN or shows that are just plain horrid. It is true that Boomerang will air some of the older shows at night, but it's often barely anything and airs much later and much shorter than something like The Splat. And you could say that this is a Boomerang problem and no so much a CN problem, but CN doesn't even play shows like Regular Show or Adventure Time anymore despite those shows not even being that old and both ending fairly recently. I just wish that networks would not neglect the shows of their past as it isn't that hard not to do so. Boomerang could easily start their own version of "The Splat" or just simply return themselves back to the version they formerly were, but instead of airing the classic 60s/70s cartoons change it up to 90s/00s to cater toward the new nostalgic audience. That's all I can think to say now, thanks for reading.
@sirBrouwer
@sirBrouwer 3 жыл бұрын
that is a very on point issue. they just drop the older shows and effectively (re)start chartering to a new audience group. (who when that 5/10 year cycle) of a network programming will move on because the network is again focusing on the new show for the new group. That in a time when the older (children and by now also adults) can't really see there shows (unless pirating). I mean i can see older people (17+) would love to just have exes to the vault that CN has and just see a show in the setting they saw when they where children.

I know this will be unpopular, but 90/early 2000s era shows probably aren't that lucrative. Their target audience would be people with nostalgia for the shows: people in their 20's/30's, who are the least likely to have cable. I think the best option would be to add these to streaming networks. I know personally, every now and then, I'll watch a cartoon I grew up with to see how it turned out, but I just watch it online. I'm not going to flip through my cable guide to see when Dexter's Lab is on and wait until 7PM

The rectangular checkered logo will forever be superior. I loved seeing that on the bottom-right when Dragon Ball Z, The PowerPuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Lab, and Johnny Bravo would come on. I loved that you say 2004 is when it started declining. That’s around the time I stopped watching and coincidentally I was moving and didn’t have tv like that anymore for a while. By the time I did it was time for the Internet to do its thing (2007). But yeah overall I just wasn’t feeling much of the shows after 2004.

This is the network that kick started many people's careers and brought upon a new era of cartoons, cartoons that had actual passion behind them and weren't just seen as products for children. Shows like Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Ed Eddn Eddy, Samurai Jack, etc. On top of that, they revolutionized adult animation and broke the formula of crappy Simpsons knockoffs, by green lighting shows that were dark, edgy, low budget, and highly experimental, shows that would've NEVER been green lit in any other network! And they succeeded! Adult Swim is debatably one of the key factors in shaping "ironic" or "random" humor, something that we see everywhere on the internet nowadays. But even on top of all of that, Cartoon Network played the most important role in bringing Japanese animation to the west! And to say that anime is "big" would be an understatement, it's HUGE! And that wouldn't have been possible without Cartoon Network, Toonami, and Adult Swim! They had a few hiccups throughout the late 2000s, but they still had some classics, like Ben 10, Chowder, and Flapjack. And on the very early 2010s, they gave us Adventure Time, Regular Show, and (one of my personal favorite shows of all time) Sym Bionic Titan!... Which got cancelled... but at least the episodes we got were good?... Point is, Cartoon Network was showing ones again that they were revolutionizing the cartoon industry and bringing something new and exciting to the table!... And now they're just making crappy tumblr calarts cartoons that are unfunny and doomed to fail after one or two seasons... Oh well. Let's just hope they change their game up for the 2020s!

You know that Genndy Tartavosky went to CalArts right? He worked on Dexter's Laboratory and Symbiotic Titan. Are those shows bad now? The problem with shows like Thundercats Roar is that they took an old IP and slapped it onto a cartoon that had little to do with the original not that it has a simplified art style. CalArts isn't even an animation style to begin with. It's like when the old fans years ago would complain about everything turning into anime and then they would point out examples like Teen Titans and Masters of the Universe - two shows which looked nothing alike.

I avidly watched Cartoon Network since I was in elementary school until high school...I think around the time Foster's Home was in its final stages. What made it so fun was the characters interacting with each other during commercial breaks. Those bumps made it feel like they existed in the same universe, and added a level of immersiveness that hasn't been captured since. Until about 2 years ago, I would only go to CN's channel for Adult Swim. Now that I'm older, more shows are being created by people who grew up with the same interests as me (Craig of the Creek standing out the most for so many childhood millennial references) have drawn me back to the channel. I like the direction it's heading in, but it still feels like there's more of a wall between myself and the shows than before. Perhaps they can take a note from their sister channel Adult Swim and start personally insulting me during the bump cards or something 😂 that'll break the barrier!

Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends and Codename: Kids Next Door were two of the best cartoons on television. Other than SpongeBob on Nick and Dave the Barbarian on Disney, my favorite cartoons were on Cartoon Network. I remember vividly that drum beat that ended with the whispered, “Cartoon Cartoons!” Such a great time period at the beginning of the fall. Unfortunately, for me, there has never been a rise. Everyone would quote it. You know exactly how it sounds. I was exactly like you. Cartoon Network, Disney, and Nick on rotation all day. That's how my cousin and I spent most of our summer vacations as kids. Fantastic video dude, this one really hit the feels super hard. I know that it's overplayed and annoying to say "kids will never understand or experience x" but seriously, the *peak* of cartoons was 90 - 2000's. It was still being pioneered, it was something new never seen before just for kids. I don't want to condescend kids today, but I really wish they could feel the magic we got to feel because it was so neat.

@@user-mc6vw3os3y I'm both a 90s and aughts kid. Glad to see at least one person who agrees with me that Pixar and CG animation in general are total garbage. I know that's not a popular opinion, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I actually seriously considered a career in animation about the time I started high school. I wanted to bring back traditional animation with traditional techniques like traditional ink and paint, hand inking, successive exposure, multiplane cameras, and the like. I'm so glad now that I didn't because Hollywood won't touch traditionally animated features with a ten-foot pole, and what traditional animation we do get on TV is generally as rotten as CG. Hollywood is where good animation goes to die. At least there's still some good anime out there, and enough good traditional animation from the pre-Pixar/DreamWorks era to keep me happy.

8:35 I'm thinking that the logo change to just "CN" might have been a direct response to the Channel Guide Channel having abbreviated the names of all of the channels so they would fit in the box on the left-hand side of the screen. Had they not changed the logo, they might have been stuck with "CAR" as their abbreviated listing, which could suggest a channel about automobiles. Just a hunch.
