Let's take a look at an awful console! The moderately rare Casio Loopy, or My Seal Computer.
With special thanks to Quang of Asobitech for letting me borrow his Loopy, and for joining in. / asobitech
And big thanks to the amazing Top Hat Gaming Man for his voiceover / @tophatgamingmanchannel
Also here is the Quantic Foundry study I mentioned, if you are interested quanticfoundry.com/2017/01/19...
The Casio Loopy was released in Japan only in 1995.

When I worked in Gamestop back in the day, I always hated when a mom came into the store to find a "girl game" for their girl. Which in their head translate to something with either, dressing up, cooking, dolls, childcare or the like. Games which will 9 outta 10 times be exceptionally sub par. I would always try to explain to them that it's way more important to pick a quality game over something like that. If they child is wishing for a specific game, that's another case, but most parents like that seemed really misguided and if you only give games where production value is low and the entertainment value drops like an anvil after just a few minutes, then you are killing that kid's interest in games as they'll just associate it with boring stuff. I was always happy if I could convince them to go home with something like Mario, Nintendogs or Pokémon that would provide both quality and longevity that would nurture their love or the video game media

It is almost as if girls have specific taste that tend to be different to boys and when clothes, comic or toy shopping parents pick up on this and then when going into an area they don't know much about ask for information expecting certain norms to still apply whether they do or should.

@@Gambit771 yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that games 'made for girls' tend to be low quality shovelware. Think of the imagine games. Some of them are decent, some even good, but there's also a heaping pile of crap that was sold under that name. Now, there are high quality 'girl games' like Style boutique/fashion savvy, but in the broad scope of games, these stereotypical girl themes are pretty underserved in terms of game quality and gameplay.

Hence why Skyrim is so great, as you can do all of this domestic stuff as well as a tremendous amount of homicide, then after looting corpses you can give their daggers to your little adopted daughter and set her on the right path in life...

Also these parents don't know their own kid. And in my kids party job on the weekends, when I'm making balloons, too many times a parent asks (i.e. tells) their daughter "Which one do you want, a flower? She wants a flower."

Hello all complaining about the pronunciation of console in the vid. Octaviuskitten appears to be from the Yorkshire/Leeds region judging by the accent. These dialects often place the emphasis on a different syllable of a word to regular pronunciations. It's a common trait of the area, and hardly a mistake. As a scouser myself, I'm very used to quirky accents.

I consider the Cassio Loopy to be the “Bizzaro Philips CD-I”. The CD-I was marketed as a jack-of-all-trades machine, but video games were the only things that ever sold on it. The Loopy was marketed as a video game console first, but the sticker printer was the only thing that ever sold on it.

Yes, the Japanese word seal means a sticker/decal/label. It's from the English word, from when we sealed envelopes with wax and embossed it with a personal stamp as proof who it was from. Sealing wax - as mentioned in the poem "The Walrus and the Carpenter " in "Alice through the Looking-Glass" by Lewis Carroll. You've probably seen decorative red seals on documents, such as educational certificates. The Japanese loan-word is シール which is "shiiru", the closest you can get to saying "seal" in Japanese, which has a limited set of phonetic letters. For the same reason, for example, the name "Laura" becomes RO-RA, and coca-cola becomes KO-KA-KOO-RA (コカ・コーラ).. There is no "L" in Japanese, and that is why Japanese people often pronounce things oddly, like telling the waiter "This chicken is rubbery" rather than "lovely". You often get little stickers as a "bonus" when you buy products in Japan, with pictures of flowers or cartoon characters or whatever. Photo booths that make stickers are ridiculously popular in Japan, almost entirely amongst women/girls, and those are called “purikura”. It is the shortened form of purinto kurabu (プリントクラブ) which is loaned from English “print club”. They take your photo (like our photo booths), but allow you to edit the picture a lot, adding clip-art and text, special effects, and then printing little sheets of stickers - which get stuck to phones, school books, satchels, whatever. Loan words often get mangled in both form and meaning.
@ann_onn
@ann_onn 6 жыл бұрын
You said "it's a patronising and ridiculous idea that young women and girls are so daft as to be entirely entertained by a glorified sticker-maker". You should _see_ the arcades in Japan, with dozens and dozens of different sticker-making machines, packed with hundreds of young girls using them. Every day, everywhere. It's very difficult to explain, but it's part of the "kawaii" (cute) culture of Japan.

Side note: There's apparently an emulator for the PV-1000. I took a quick look in Google and found plenty of pages talking about it, but nowhere to download the actual emulator itself. I guess it's no great loss as the Old Computer Museum claims there were only 15 games released for it and of those, I could only find five to download. There seems to be a PV-2000 console/emulator with better graphics too, but that seems to be even rarer than the PV-1000.

*Casio circa early 1990s* Manager: Alright team, we need to make a console to cater to the much underserved female gamer market. Problem is, our competition is moving into 3D graphics and our tech is barely 16-bit. How do we get ahead? Employee: Well we have all those label makers that we didn't sell that are sitting in storage... Manager: You're a goddamn genius, you know that?

I guess if going by stereotypes they assumed two+ controllers are for competitive gaming, and competition is a male thing, teen girls just sit around and giggle so no need for more controllers. One more example as to why marketing departments should be locked away in some detached space, away from the normal humans.

While I think there is definitely a market for games targeted at girls, especially younger girls, I don't think that many girls/women are put off gaming because the consoles are insufficiently pink or not trimmed in lace, and its kind of patronising to produce consoles that are "simplified" for those poor females who struggle to cope without large buttons and cutesy design. It;s good that most major games have options to allow the player to customise their avatar to a female form for those that want that, and that game developers have been making a wider range of games to suit different tastes. I personally dont like shoot-em-up type games so the rise of complex creative or simulation games like the Sims or Minecraft has been good for me. Anyhow I'm rambling and not sure where I'm going with this so I'll stop!

Like you say, this was aimed at a very specific demographic, but it was never a case of saying ALL girls must use the Loopy and nothing else. Far from it really, I think that's just our reaction to anything with gender-specific branding these days. Having literally just got back from Japan a week ago, you see these sticker photo booths absolutely everywhere, and they're more or less solely aimed at young girls. They're also massively popular! So, I can understand why they thought a home console version might work out well. Great video by the way, really informative!

A small note : according to my Japanese language teacher, people don't invite each other in their house often. Most of the time, when someone pays you a visit, he don't go further than the けんかん (entrance hall) and don't enter the actual house. Which means that you don't often bring friends at home... maybe that may help to understand why there is no need for two controllers. Also, Japan is very different culturally and we shouldn't try to "judge" according to our cultural standards... This console may look crap for us... that don't make it crap for the Japanese girl... in a society where the roles of men and women are very defined (even if it tend to change)

Fascinating that releasing a games console is very difficult for electronics giants. Even Microsoft lost billions with the first Xbox and then released the first model Xbox 360 with a 50% hardware failure rate. No wonder Samsung will happily fight with Apple iPhones whilst leaving the games industry well alone. As to the aforementioned Apple: Pippin.

Bow Wow Puppy Love Story looks like it's supposed to be something like a Visual Novel, albeit a fairly limited one, but i have played a few modern VNs that have very little in the way of dialogue choices (one i played i think only has 3 branches in the entire game) so it's not too absurd. @Ts6451
@Ts6451 6 жыл бұрын
It does seem a bit stereotypical and condescending towards girls, but perhaps we are just judging this from a different cultural bias, apparently photo booths with graphical editing and sticker printing have been very popular in Japan, so it is quite probable that they researched what would appeal to the target demographic. So, the real problem might not have been that it did not appeal to the demographic, but rather that it is one thing to get a few stickers when hanging with your friends down at the local shopping centre( that would be cheap enough for a kid/teen to afford and more of an impulse buy), but quite another to get your parents to buy one to have at home... I suspect the booths would be more advanced and have better quality, too.

I really like that 90's anime look though. It's super nostalgic for me.

If Nintendo has taught me anything, it’s that those A, B, C, and D buttons are in the wrong order on the controller.

Just so you know, they call it the "Seal Computer" because it was marketed by Seal, the singer. It was similar to how Souja Boy does consoles today.

My Seal Computer, because it's got Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" playing on repeat.

If this console was released in the USA and I was a father of girls in 1996, I wouldn't buy it for them because this thing obviously doesn't have "being a worthwhile system" in mind. With toys like Barbie, Lego Friends, and Shopkins, it's obvious that they're stereotypical as can be. But there's more playability in those toys than this oversized plastic paperweight ever had.

After rewatching this video, I feel as if that narrator from the beginning sounds like the Yellow Guy from "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared".
