In summary: - competition kettlebells (CK) are made of steel whereas cast iron kettlebells (IK) ones are made of ... cast iron. And that leads to... - CK are always the same size regardless of their weight whereas IK incease in size with their weight - CK are realtivley top heavy whereas IK are relatively bottom heavy - For CK, the technqiue remains the same for all sizes whereas the technqiue slightly changes for different sizes - (older) CK are more sensitive than IK ones - CK handles are relatively small comparing to IK ones IK = good for swings

"IK = good for swings" Thats based on the assumption that we all have the same sized hands....and of course, that is not the case as us humans come in all different shapes and sizes. So that statement is very subjective. I have genetically small type arms and hands and some of the cast iron bells are no good for me. Some small bells don't rack on my smaller forearms with a nice 3 points of contact and can be uncomfortable. Then some of the larger bells of 24kg upwards are dodgy for my grip for swings or carrys as the handle size increases. What we can say for certain about both types of bell is this. The IK bells are all the same size and if one fits you...you can rest assure that they all will fit you or visa versa. So it's very simple to find out if the feel of a IK bell suits you in all the weights....just try one bell and you have your answer. But with CK bells you will have to try out each bell individually to determine if they sit right with you because each bell is a different size with a different size handle. Also they might very in shape in handle or body from brand to brand too. A 16kg Kettlebell King CK bell might be totally different in shape and feel to a 16kg made from a different manufacturer. So one thing we can be certain between the two bells is that buying online can be a very dodgy affair more so with CK bells.

I recently bought a competition kettlebell (CK) from Kettlebell kings after using cast iron (CI) for more than a year and I wish I had the CK earlier. When I used the cast iron, I noticed that - the kettlebell would bang on my wrists whenever I did movements like cleans /snatch. - my wrists would hurt even when in a simple resting position So to address these, I studied numerous videos on kettlebell form and also bought wrist bands which alleviated the issue With the competition kettlebell, the smaller handle and the larger circumference means that I am able to slide my hand without banging/scraping my wrists. The fact that these factors are going to be consistent as I change the kettlebell weight also gives me great confidence going forward.

Very well done video Eric. I've been teaching hard style classes with "traditional bell" and coach and participate in kettlebell sport with competition bells. Lots of people ask about the types of kettlebells especially as beginners. I find many of my hardstyle fitness class people are hesitant to use the pro-grades...I love them and really try to promote the use of both bells during classes depending on what we are doing. I'll be sure to add this video to our kettlebell facebook page.

This was super helpful I’m shopping online right now and alltho I work with KBs often in the gym I’ve never worked with competition KB. I think I’ll stick with the cast iron for the fact that I prefer more KB flow and if I were to drop it I’d like to just pick it up and keep going and not worry if it’s broken or loose, also the comfort of width on the KB handle and horns are a big consideration when shopping. 👍🏽 thank you

Would you suggest trying cast iron kettlebells to someone who's only trained with a comp bell but now wants to get up in weight? I do not plan on competing any time soon, if ever actually. My only goal for training kettlebells is to get stronger and stay healthy. Mostly get stronger. What do you say?
@peterthompson3692

Great explanation! One other thought for smaller people (I'm a staggering 5'3) is that it's a lot easier to do doubles work with the cast iron bells. I find stance width needed to fit two competition style bells between my legs a bit awkward!

I bought a Decathlon Domyos bell that has a "competition look" handle but a cast iron construction. It's 16kg. Almost unusable for cleans, snatches and presses. I need to wear arm protection and it exerts so much torque when being pressed that it feels much heavier than 35lbs. Its a decent bell for swings, rowing and any two handed move but dangerous for a lot of one handed technqiues.

@smurfk2144
@smurfk2144 3 жыл бұрын
I do presses, cleans, with Domyos one, is just fine. As with most of them, technique matters. You might bang your hand when you start using it, but that's due to poor technique. Adjust that and you're gonna be fine. Domyos ones are great as far as price goes, they are two times cheaper than competition ones, it's much easier to start out with them. Rubber base is nice for not destroying your floors too. Really, don't buy into the whole "you need X kettlebell, everything else sucks". Use what you have, adjust your techniques and you'll be fine.

What you think about plastic kettlebells filled with sand or cement? I can buy 16 and 24 for 70$. Second option is to buy vinyl-metal bells for 110$(16 and 24 also). Have to do something while gyms are closed. Thanks!
@TheKettlebellDoctor
@TheKettlebellDoctor 4 жыл бұрын
They're personally not my favourite. I didn't realize the sand/cement ones got that heavy! My concern is that if you drop it, it may break. Growing up my dad had cement plates and a few of them broke and it was indeed a huge mess. I also prefer not to use the vinyl-coated ones either because the extra friction tugs on my arm hair and gets very annoying very fast. I know nowadays kettlebells are hard to come by, so if I had to choose between those two options, I'd choose the vinyl ones and cut off the vinyl. Good luck!

If you wish to follow the hard style kettlebell technique, mixing one and 2 hand swings... does the cast iron work the stability and core as well as grip, to a higher degree than competition bell. Giving you more strength relative to the competition plus forces the user to have a better technique, to avoid slamming your wrists etc. And why does Pavel prefer to use them to competition bells? any advice please
@TheKettlebellDoctor
@TheKettlebellDoctor 4 жыл бұрын
For swings as far as 'stability and core', I doubt there is any noticeable difference between types of bells. As far as grip, since cast iron bells vary in size, as do the handles (and of course vary in between brands more than competition bells). Thus, depending on the weight of cast iron kettlebell and what brand, I'd say the demand on the grip would be more impacted. I can't speak as to why Pavel prefers them to competition bells. I would only be speculating.

Dr. Eric St-Onge Thank you for your response. If there is no evidence that the iron kettle bell is better or worse for the hard style kettle bell would you recommend the competition bell as more appropriate. I found a mark to kettle bell for similar price to a good quality iron one, so financially I’m not concerned...I do too hands and single hand swings , and at the moment I’m trying the S and S format. I have been practising my snatching /clean with the iron bell at 12 kg. And are iron more appropriate for women. As my wife has a large chest.
@TheKettlebellDoctor
@TheKettlebellDoctor 4 жыл бұрын
If you tend to do lots of 2-handed swings, my preference would be cast iron kettlebells. They tend to have a longer handle and makes it easier to fit all your fingers (of course it depends on the weight kettlebell). So unless you plan on training and competing in kettlebell sport, cast iron may be the best option for you. For your wife, my advice would be to have her try out different kinds of kettlebells to see which are more comfortable for her.

As I understand the differences, the competition version is better for higher reps, it seem they are more machined, whence, are more expensive. This alone suits my needs.

I been trying to order a competition Kettlebell king bell for months, it does not seem possible? So I use a cast iron bell purchased at Walmart. Used it to learn and correct techniques and skills, this is a bit wearing on my hands. Awaiting availability of competition bells so I may move up in kB, I use one handed right now.

I have found my patients are intimidated by competition bells, as they seem heavier than they are, where as an 8kg in iron, not so intimidating.... It's a big pink ball, but hey, I am no judging. Myself, I like hard style bells. They feel very honest when they are well made brands like Rogue or KB Kings.

+micapalokazzopa hello! Great question. If you are completely new to resistance training, I'd recommend starting off at 8kg or 12kg. If you have some experience training with weight, then 12kg or 16kg can ve a great place to start. Buying 1 or 2 kettlebells of different weights would be a great start. Another recommendation is to keep the weight cery light as youre learning technique. It's cery easy to injure yourself of you lift heavy weights wity improper form! Good luck to you!

Good info as always. Some of us beginners have a very hard time because of bad mobility or flexibility, due to a lifetime of sitting and inactivity. Can you shed some light on mobility/flexibility needed to safely start with?
@TheKettlebellDoctor
@TheKettlebellDoctor 6 жыл бұрын
wb1 thanks for the kind words! A basic rules of thumb is that if you can't perform the movement unloaded, then you shouldn't do the move loaded (or, with a kettlebell). So if the exercise is a press overhead, can you actually put your hand overhead without compensations elsewhere is your body. If the answer is no, then work on that before progressing to pressing a kettlebell overhead. Most of of the time, general stretching works just fine. Bug to accelerate your progress, and especially if you have any pain/discomfort (!), I'd recommend going to visit your favourite manual healthcare professional :)
