Its been a great year! This channel has gown by nearly 150,000 subscribers. Thank you to everyone who had supported Robinson Foundry. To celebrate I cast a full size KZfaq play button in fine silver. I started by designing a 3d model in Fusion 360. I printed the model on my Elegoo Saturn resin 3d printer. Then I made a simple sand mold using petrobond casting sand. I melted a 1kg fine silver bar in my homemade metal melting foundry and poured it into the mold.

I don't know a single thing about metal casting, but I've been following for about 6 months now and I've always been curious and fascinated by what you've done. Plus you're editing skills are great too. Literally just keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep coming back for more :)

You need to add some boric acid to your silver as soon as you turn your furnace off. .25 grams for every 10 ounces generally works well depending on how good/clean your .999 silver is. You may need to adjust that if you have more impurities floating on the top. Your silver was too hot when you poured. Wait until the rim of your crucible starts to darken. Keep your stream within an inch of the edge of your crucible and keep a slow steady stream. That will help with out gassing and minimize craters in the middle of the mold.

If you use flux, you probably wont have the bubbles. Also if you use vacuum casting in plaster, you can have much more details in your casting. And maybe you can use the 20 grams of silver to do just that. :) You need some good burn out resin. I saw "VOG jewelry" do a lot of that. Greetings, Jeff

It would be fantastic if you could make a video in which you 3d print a mold, pour wax into it, and then dip the wax model in Suspendaslurry to determine whether the wax evaporates faster or slower than PLA and also if the final product quality suffers or improves. The mold may be printed with 0% infill to save time and material, and it can be reused to create several wax models, reducing print time even more. Also, make sure the mold is made of a heat-resistant material like PETG, as PLA may distort when pouring hot wax. Love your videos, keep it up!

Two questions: 1) Why did you print the mold up at a 45 degree angle like that if you were just going to peel off all the supports anyway? Is that some side effect of the resin printing process? 2) How much work do you have to put into cleaning the crucible before you melt stuff in it?
@FyreFiend
@FyreFiend Жыл бұрын
I can’t speak to 2 but when resin printing you want to angle the print somewhere between 30-45° as it gives you cleaner details on the print

Looking at your nice work, I all of sudden think of a huge challange people had succeeded before and did not document how. I am not asking you to try it because it is very hard, but I wonder if you could describe how it can be done. The problem is: Cast 1KG cylinder with mirror finish using metal material of choice such that the mass error is less than 0.05ppm and the yearly error is less than 0.5ppm.
