In this video I will show you how to install Cavfab's One Ton Crossover steering with Heim Joints, on the front axle of your Jeep. This install is done on a Dana 30 front axle and is the same process among various jeep models. If you have any other questions please comment below, I would be happy to help.

Fine thread top lock bolts are a bad idea if you plan to work on the steering in the future. Basically makes the bolt a one time use. Use coarse thread. Shank the bolt properly and torque the bolt properly.

I don't like how they just have washers for the tie rod joints. So I ended up getting 5/8" cone spacer .438" thick for top and bottom heim joints and they fit perfectly rock solid on both sides and not leaving too little or too much bolt threads. They're only like $1.60 a piece.

Locktite everything, and use blue on the locknuts for the heims. That locknut is either not getting tightened enough against the drag link bar to lock the heim out properly or is rattling loose.

Only advantages are to match the angle of the track bar to avoid getting bump steer. So on top is a steeper angle and bottom is not.

Locktite is optional for this actually since the hardware comes with locking nuts which bite onto the threads. I would suggest blue locktite if you wanted extra piece of mind.

Question: I’ve watched this video as well as the ZJ steering conversion video for an XJ, besides the obvious fact that CavFab is more expensive, which is better in your opinion? I won’t be doing any major off-roading, however, I don’t mind spending extra to do it right the first time, Thanks!
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 2 жыл бұрын
If you are not doing too much off-roading and it's mostly a daily driver, i would defiantly go with the ZJ steering conversion. I am not a big fan of these crossover steering kits with heim joints after driving with them for a few years, they squeak, rattle on bumps, harder to adjust, and non-greasable. Keeping a factory style steering like the ZJ will be better in the long run.

If you got death wobble and it was installed properly then you got problems elsewhere. The angle of the drag will not cause death wobble but rather bump steering if it is not parallel with the track bar.

You can rotate the heim joints on either end of the tie rod and drag link but loosening and tightening up the locking nut. This will offset the heims and reduce the amount of up and down slop.

@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 3 жыл бұрын
You will need to take on and off the drag link ends and tie rod ends to thread in or out to be able to adjust the toe and steering wheel. The heim joint ends need to be cocked opposite of each other to keep the linkage pointing forward with the bends to prevent it from falling down.

So check this. I got death wobble like a mofo. All my measurements are exact. Quadruple checked. But it’s bad when I hit a bump. When the previous kit was perfect. I installed both so I hope I didn’t mess it up. Is the stabilizer enough to prevent it. Or is going to be more of a bandaid and it still happen. Any solution or specific point I should look at? Tips please
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 3 жыл бұрын
The stabilizer will cover it up. The primary cause of death wobble is either worn out track bushings/ connection points or upper/lower control arm connection bushings/connection point. Unbalanced wheels or bad tierod ends could cause things to set in motion for death wobble to occur.

My 4.5 lift kit is on it's way. I like this setup but I am concerned that like you say the bolt will come loose and mess up either a steering knuckle (bad) or a pitman arm (not as bad) I am thinking I should at least replace the old setup with something. Is there any other setup that gets rid of the Y factor and keeps an easy way of alignment? I see at this time this setup is on sale for $219.99.
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 5 жыл бұрын
The nuts shouldn't back off as long as they are properly tighten. The kits come with lock nuts that have a tight thread on them so they are pretty tight on there, probably 4x tighter than a nylon lock nut. As far as other kits, crossover steering style there are other companies that also offer it but they look exacly the same. But there are other kits out there that are 1 ton setups but are the Y setup, such as JCR Offroad and RuffStuff. www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/R2237.html www.jcroffroad.com/product/STR/1TS-UTK.html

Heims are definitely better for extreme articulation but not so much for daily driving. They will wear out faster, squeak and might need adjusting a lot to keep the tie rod from bouncing on bumps. Great parts, but don't expect to get them or competent customer service anytime soon. I ordered a steering kit and the website stated it usually ships in 7-10 days. On the 10th day, a shipping label was created, but I came to find out my box would still be sitting around for weeks. I had sent three emails asking about my order and finally heard back on the third one. I was told my order was held back because of chips in the powder coat. Since the powder coat was apparently faulty on the last batch, I asked if we could just sand blast my kit and not re-coat it. I was told that was fine and my bare metal kit would ship out in the next two days, nothing happened for the rest of the week. I called back on Monday to see what was going on and was told "I'm not sure what happened". They assured me yet again that my kit would ship out in the next few days. I waited another week before I called back. I was told my kit shipped yesterday, but the funny thing is that the UPS tracking didn't show it was dropped off until after I had called that day... I finally received my kit over a month after I ordered it. It was not bare metal as agreed to over the phone, but a black powder coat that was never discussed with me, and there were chips in this coat as well. When I asked the owner about it, he gave me the runaround yet again. CavFab should know that they shouldn't treat their customers this way.
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 6 жыл бұрын
Ian Culbertson That's to be expected though with a small crew and a lot of product demand. They get emails about customers complaining about they're shipping speeds all the time. It's to be expected I guess expecially with the good price. Plus with a complication in the production it slows things down and may not be able to listen to all of the customers demands. Mine came in 3 weeks. Doesn't bother me too much as long as I know it's American made and doesn't break the bank.

I bought kit and i can not get bars to tighten. How do u get the bar from the pitman arm to knuckle to not just flop around im stummped can anybody help
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 6 жыл бұрын
derrick chilton Tighten the locking nut on each side and have the him joints facing down on one side and up on the other. This way there should be very little to no play in the bar moving up and down.

@@OutJeeping thanks bro! I just installed this kit and was doing the same thing, some people tell me it’s normal for it to be loose like that cause of the heim joints but I don’t find it normal at all.

@@OutJeeping what do you mean by facing up and down? Is there a top and bottom to the heim or do you mean putting one over the knuckle and one under?

Do you not need a steering stabilizer
@OutJeeping

Is it required, no. Can you add one if you want the steering to cushion a little more, yes.

and what about the drag link and track bar has to be parrellel?? does that not apply here??
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 4 жыл бұрын
It's optional to use a steering damper. If everything else in the front end is nice and tight you may not need it like in my case. But CavFab and other companies offer a clap setup to attach the damper to the one ton steering. But yes ideally you want the drag link and track bar parallel from end point to end point to eliminate bump steer.

Do you use your xj as your daily? Is there much binding noise from the metal on metal heims?
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Wilson Yeah it's my daily. Every once and a while I put some wd40 on the heims if they get squeaky. Never any binding.

Use PB Blaster. Much better then WD for lubrication. I only use WD for water displacement

@@fishhead6349 Theres a controlled study video comparing different lubes on youtube and WD40 came out on top PB Blaster came in second. Any of the lubes are oil base and will work for water issues.
