In this video we install Iron Rock Off Road's heavy duty over the knuckle steering kit on a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon LJ, which is a longer version of the TJ. The kit eliminates the factory Y link completely and replaces it with a 1.25" solid cold rolled steel tie rod running from knuckle to knuckle, over the knuckle rather than under. This provides additional strength, clearance from rocks, and also maintains a static toe setting. The drag link is also replaced with 1.25" solid cold rolled steel. Both the tie rod and drag link utilize heavy duty heim joints AKA spherical rod ends. We opted for the 5/8" hardware upgrade which required drilling of the knuckles and pitman arm. IRO has a kit available that is completely bolt on and requires no drilling.

Fantastic the drag link still follows the same angle as the track rod. This should be a wicked strong system with no bumpsteer, and no removing stock mounts for sway bar. I love it 👍 good vid

Definitely a nice set I've been looking at for a while for my xj. I wouldn't go by the measurements knuckle to knuckle up in the air with the y link, it toes in a bunch when you are at full droop. Measure when you're on the ground first, then with the new set you'll be fine in the air.

Nice work guys. Thanks for sharing your content. Just a couple recommendations... Wear safety glasses, especially when using power tools (your eyes are much too precious). Slow down your drilling speed just a bit when drilling steel and be generous with the oil. Good stuff though. I'm installing this kit on my Jeep soon. Thought I'd look to see if I could get some pointers. I don't think my steering link is going to separate from the pitman arm quite as easily as your did though. haha Thanks again for your vid!

Is it normal for the drag link to have play after installed? Also after hitting a rock my drag link is binding on the tie rod where the bend is by the passenger side tie rod end.

Not sure I like the drag link on the bottom of the steering knuckle. Do you still have your ZJ ?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 4 жыл бұрын
The drag link connects way over close to the tire so it's a good trade off over having the entire tie rod 2-3" closer to the ground. Nope, I miss the ZJ, but I sold it toward the end of 2018 and started building a 2005 LJ (not the one in this video)

You mentioned that you can leave the Jeep on the ground, do you mean tha it can be done with the wheels on? If so they shouldn’t really need to be aligned after, that would save a fair bit of time
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 3 жыл бұрын
Depending on your tire/wheel setup and if you opt for the larger hardware, you may have a harder time drilling the knuckles out with the tires/wheels still bolted up. Take a look at the room you have to work with and if you think it won't be an issue go for it because like you said it'll allow you to skip the measurements, etc.

Thanks for the reply, I’m actually in Australia so my tj is rhd, yeah I was just gonna go with the 1/2 inch set up coz it seems fairly strong enough to cope with what I do with my rig, Ironrock have a rhd kit and after watching your video It’ll be the next project I’ll do, thanks again for the reply 🤙

Did this require relocation of the sway bar bracket? I have a 2000xj with 5 in lift
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 2 жыл бұрын
I don't believe there were any clearance issues because the tie rod bows out away from the axle. Can't say for sure though, wasn't there when the sway bar went on.

Cooper has been petted for ya!! This isn't my Jeep in this video but I do have lower pucks on mine too that came with the IRO kit. I would have to measure but I think they're around 2" or so. You running into bump stop issues?

RYANVISION Not really having issues, just getting it dialed in. 4.5 inch LA lift, 35in KM3’s and Napier flat flares. 4.5 inch daystar extended bumps. Now just trying to figure out how tall I need to go on top of the axle. I noticed you had some on your green Jeep at the end of the video. Hope your having a great weekend.

Do you need a lift to install this or can it be done to a stock Jeep ?
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 3 жыл бұрын
Works with 3" to 8" of lift and does not work with OEM wheels. Wheel spacers or wheels with less than stock backspacing (4.5" maximum backspacing) are required.

@@ryan.vision the rims I ordered are the pro Comp 51 series. They say they have a backspacking of 3.75, so I would need a wheel spacer of 1.75 to fit?

Or you could do the WJ knuckle swap for a high steer and crossover set up...
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 4 жыл бұрын
I run a setup similar to what you're describing, but not everyone can afford the $700+ for the complete bolt on crossover kits or know someone who can make them beefy custom tie rod and drag link for a knuckle swap. I'm a crappy welder but lucky to know some good ones haha. I run a different knuckle similar to WJ, and if I remember correctly I think the WJ knuckle swap requires welding a hub spacer on? I could be mixed up on that, might have been specific to ZJ. Anyways, this is a great kit for folks who have basic tools and knowledge because they can literally just bolt it on in under an hour unless they opt for the larger hardware and have to drill but still pretty easy.

That looks like a really bad drag link angle. Looks like it would be really hard to turn when your in the rocks. stronger but something else is going to snap. But that's only my two cents..... High steer kit with a new knuckle would of been a better choice.
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision 4 жыл бұрын
His front axle was at full droop and the steering joints weren't maxed out. Think his shocks are probably the limiter at the moment, needs to get some limit straps. I ran the same steering kit on Project ZJ for a few years with 14" travel and didn't have any issues on or off road. Eventually I went to crossover with a WJ style knuckle when I ended up on around 7" or so of lift. This setup will work awesome for Vlad on 4.5" and we'll get some video of it in action soon as things get back to normal. I can't wait!!

Why do have the drag link under the knuckle and crossing over the tie rod .
@ryan.vision
@ryan.vision Жыл бұрын
This particular kit places the tie rod over the knuckle and the drag link connects under the knuckle. There are other setups that run the tie rod under the knuckle and the drag link connects on top. There's also crossover (WJ style) that allows you to run tie rod and drag link over the knuckle.
